I will continue to use Optimax when I can;
my nearest Shell station is about 20 miles
from me, but will have no qualms about using
my local Tesco (it sells 99 ron )every now and again.

Bioethanol is, as described earlier, made from sugar beet or imported molasses. It's both an octane enhancer and a damn good cleaning agent in its own right, it burns cooler too, which is also nice for the engine.

The limit in petrol is capped at 5% as that's all a modern engine is designed to take without its seals/gaskets melting through chemical attack.

The duty reduction on the stuff is presently 40% IIRC, meaning that on 5% by volume the difference is 3/5ths of bu*ger all...

The ford model T was designed to run on either petrol or ethanol, with ford reportedly thinking that ethanol, not petrol, was the fuel of the future.

Can anyone guess what my final year uni product involved?

Is there a way of finding out which tesco's have it?

having experimented with a few ecu maps clearly optimax and tesco 99 are far superior in my opinion. infact i wont even use texaco/esso/bp after experimenting with all of them, texaco 'super' was so low octane that it completely shut the turbo's down. do trading standards check octane levels? never had a bad tank of optimax or tesco 99. 1 or 2 bottles of octane booster do the trick with the crap stuff but at £3 a bottle its a false economy... i guess for most cars it really doesnt matter, just high compression/turbo's

According to Tescos thesewere the first twelve trial sites, all in the S or SE, they said they'd increase coverage if initial sales were favourable.

Bedford 1
Cheshunt Extra
Crawley Hazelwick
Gallions Reach Extra
Gillingham
Lakeside
Ramsgate Manston
Salisbury 2
Sandhurst
Sevenoaks Riverhead
Stevenage
Winchester

Other threads on PH suggest that Tesco are now rolling out sales of the 99 RON fuel as some PHers have bought it at other stores, but it's not widespread yet.

Why all the fuss about adding ethanol to fuel?

Have you ever seen an alcohol fuelled dragster go down the strip ???

Soon as they've worked out a good way to tax bioethanol you'll then start to see it on the forcourts.
Its a true alternative to hydrocarbon fuels and it doesn't knacker engines if the ignition is set right!

Here in the States we have had gas with some ethanol in it for many years. It does provide a cheap, high octane fuel, but don't be surprised if your fuel-injected cars give a reduction in milage about equal to the % of alcohol.

It can cause problems with various rubber bits in some cars.

Most importantly ethanol absorbs water, so don't store a car full of this gas.

It's OK if you keep it fresh, it tends to "sour" faster than ordinary gas.

I avoid gas with a heavy alcohol content in my M3, my B, and my bikes, but will use it in my Chevy which is pretty octane-sensitive for a V-8 with nominal 8.5:1 compression.

As M3 Mitch as said, 100 Ron has been around for many years. During WW2, the U.S. sold us 100 Ron for use in Spitfires, made quite a difference I believe...........

With Opti my car changes up at 58mph, with Tesco 99 it changes up at 60 (both indicated)

Tesco's in Brislington, Bristol sells it for 93.9p!
Just started using it, to early to know if it's better than Optimax, but the HSV would appear to go just as well on it.
It may not have the same amount of detergents etc. that Optimax has, so I'll probably alternate between the 2.
Great value though.
I searched for my local branches via the Tesco website & then rang them up.

An administrator from Scoobynet has been told by tesco's customer services that its not 99RON but 98RON.

If this is the case then no difference to Optimax

(unless of course you are in Germany or Italy were the equivalent "V-Power" is 100RON and 99RON, lucky buggers!).

How can they advertise it as 99ron on the pumps then?
Surprised that they could be allowed to do that!
Could I get my money back? LOL.
