Have you ever driven a Metro ? At about 30mph the damn thing feels like it is going to fall apart...This could explain the reason for the 'speed' they do.

I don`t think that a person who isn`t confident enough to take a car upto 56mph at least on a motorway (Good Conditions) should be considered fit for driving

I have to say I'm on the side of those despising farts in Metros.
Perhaps speed cameras could be fitted with some kind of canon. The camera looks for a large gap followed by a small car with cushions on the parcel shelf. If that car is doing less that 75% of the speed limit, Mr Armourlite takes over.

As an aside, in many states in the US, if you are holding up a line of traffic of 4 or more vehicles, the law requires you to pull over and let them pass.

I think it's not the fact that these people feel safe at only 30 in a 60. That's fine - people should drive at a speed they are comfortable with. It's the selfishness shown by so many to restrict others to their speed on perfectly safe overtaking roads.

JSG I have got to say that is possible the most eloquent put down I have read in a long time. Personally I'd have said "tosser" but I guess it says the same thing

My first car was an Austin Metro. Keeping it a 60mph or more could best be described as interesting. I learned a lot about planning ahead in that little thing.

My instructor taught me to drive to the speed limit whenever appropriate as anything less would be holding up traffic.

My driving instructor - an ex-Police Advanced Driver - always told me to 'use the road to it's full advantage'.

He also told me to check my f'ing mirrors constantly.

Who taught these Metro Muppets how to drive? and how the hell did they pass the test?

DIGGA they probably never had lessons or sat a test!

Was once in a metro (1.0L) that did 85 mph downhill with a following wind on the M40 - god that was scary

My brother once took a fiat Panda to 65 on an airfield- the doors nearly came off!

I think that old people should be made to take a driving test evry year after ther age of 60 to prove that they are fit enough to drive ,after they have taken all their drugs they must think they are flying ! i must say i find them a huge danger on the road you folow them in a 60 limit doing 35-40 get to a village with a 30 limit and they carry on at 40 concentrating on driving ........ i think not .

Everyone on this forum would surely agree that more than half the 'driver population' (1) don't even think about overtaking, (2) chicken out if they do think about it, and (3) don't know how to do it anyway. Is it part of the driving test nowadays? Probably not, if the endless queues behind mimsers and caravans are anything to go by. Personally, I wouldn't dare flash my lights or use the horn either. Get reported to the police if you do (that's happened to me three times).

More cheerfully, took my 996 out this-afternoon to perk up the battery and get some more miles on it. Didn't intend to go that far, but a trucker who WAS holding everyone up pulled into the layby where I planned to turn round and go home again, so I had to do the full 80 mile circuit! Nice of him though, and unusual.

Anyway, chuntering along the road past Ben Lawers with patches of snow and ice on the road, came up behind a reasonably quick guy in a sportyish yellow thing. First reasonable straight he indicated and let me thru. Nice. Then two fortyfivers for about ten miles and not a hope. Turned off onto the 'mountain' road for home - narrow, wintry, dark and twisty - came up behind cautious black Merc, turned off my Xenons not wanting to dazzle him, and stayed reasonably close. Lo and behold he pulled into the next layby and let me pass. Finally five miles from home another two fiftyish cars so close together you'd think they were in love... Gave up after repeated attempts. You just can't trust other people on slippery roads.

Point of this ramble - three good'uns, four dolts. Probably all middle-aged (yes, much younger than me!), but it wouldn't be all that hard to teach the dolts not to be so damn selfish, surely. Periodic driving tests with road manners included maybe not a bad idea....

hi all

reading through McNabs post, it seems to me that the obvious conclusion is that the "Metro Syndrome" is not really a matter of age.

My dad drove like a bat out of hell and had rasor sharp responses until the day he died. His assortment of cars included Scoobys, Porsches, various Merc SLs including a GullWing 300 SL

I think that inept drivers, irrespective of age, tend to gravitate towards inept cars. After all, noone who wants to DRIVE a car will buy a Metro-style car if he can avoid it. Some adept drivers may, however, not be able to afford anything else. Generalisations are always dangerous, although in the case of Metro Man I think its fair.

Mungo,

Couldn't agree more! The trouble is they seem to outnumber us ten to one, and even with the passage of time it's hard to see much change taking place.

So many people are born with their waistcoats on, and never manage to take them off again. Result; steadfast politically correct personality. (Oh - no offense intended towards waistcoat wearers!!)

I didn't even get to sit in it - it was worth an absolute fortune. My dad was a bit of a lad, he also had a sense of honour from the last century (his last duel was in the late '50s). He lost it gambling - and paid up.

It was a charismatic car, but there is no denying 50 years of technical progress, and for going fast he used modern cars.

sorry.. survive and find really ugly likeminded partners and breed offspring from the same mould as themselves to carry on the 40 mph tradition in whatever pile of shite car is the future equivelent of the Austin Metro.

in the natural course of things this sort should be getting extinct. Why our concern with road safety, speed etc. etc. etc. - we are meddling with nature and the laws of evolution!!!!

don't take me too seriously ...

hmmm, obviously driving "exotic" cars has blunted some of your driving skills !!!

A mate of mine bought a Metro 1275, 'cos it was all he could afford. Funny enough, not a lot of people ever got past it, he drove it fast, and WELL.

I went in it, and the thing corners FLAT, and brakes were excellent. Top speed a bit low, and rather noisey, but handling was very good. So good infact, that I cannot see why Metro drivers go so damn slow.

Nisan Micra. I test drove one a while ago, now it must be that it was brand new? but this also handled very well. Brakes were top notch, and a very willing little 1300 engine, good clutch & gears. Yet most people drive them SO SLOW !!!! Why?!

Don't blame the cars, blame the drivers. I really think you lot are terribly biased. FFS, 60mph in a Metro/Panda/Micra is NOT A BIG DEAL unless said car is knackered. Try a new one and you'd be surprised. Don't forget, it's the DRIVERS that are crap, the cars are merely average !!

I once had a Metro GTi 16V as a company car. That was quick, went round corners really well and only got noisy above 80mph. Great little car.

Fair enough, if you really believe that, then fine! tell you what, if you ever get a chance to have a test drive of a *decent* one, DO SO. It may change your opinion a bit. Don't judge things before trying, that's all. And no, I don't drive a Metro, but you probably would hate my Smart car?? .
