Prejudiced against Rice rockets?
Discussion
8 years - considering austin offered 6 years in 1980 and lancia 10 years in 84, with even citroen now giving 12 years on their current range, that says it all.
Plus its the image of jap c... ars. So many fast and furious style things, graphics that probably read 'I sold my moms furniture to buy these and they look crap'
ps. 5th gen celica is 90 - 94. havent seen a rusty 7th gen one yet. Just depressed owners as they realise that something 20 years old has trounced them and that no matter how many letters you put after the name, doesnt change it being poo
pps. Exceptions to this rule include unmodified versions of the following cars : rx7s, gt4s and the impreza from the years when they first started rallying.

Why the hell would you want an Esprit?
Seriously?
That is very nice.
And that yellow thing ought to be chucked in a canal.
Cheers
Pat
Agreed . The MR2 is a perfectly innocent attractive little sportscar. An MR2 with a Ferrari bodykit is best consigned to the skip. That yellow one is a hideous mess.

It's mid engine'd
Gorgeous
Tweekable (but the MR2 is easier and cheaper to tune)
Better handling
And staying on topic, it is more accepted at PH meets, true you shouldn't care what people think, but it would be nice to go to a PH meet and some one actually wants to talk about your car. Feel left out I guess.
My plans for a kitted RX7 won't be too welcome then.
The Japanese kept making RWD sports cars when just about every other eurobox manufacturer gave up. So now there is a plentiful of proper (ie RWD) sports cars out there for not a lot of cash.
Only a few other manufacturers kept the game up & thankfully they did.
The Japanese though making bland looking cars are probably more experienced at making real sports cars for the masses than any other nation.

My four is lightly modified. Still looks the same. Goes a bit better now.
Work is ongoing.
And I ran a 1991 5th Generation Celica GTi-16 for 2 years. Nothing broke. It didn't rust. It only failed to start when I left the lights on. And I drove the doors off it.
Most Jap cars are a very good all round package (performance, cost and realiabilit), for some (including me) this makes them less apealing (read soul-less and bland). You could also argue the snob attitude that you can buy a rice rocket that will outperform a car x10 it's price (however, that said, you can use the same argument for Kevin Wankersly and his super modded-mega-blown-shitbox-vauxhall).
My personal loathing for Jap sports cars is that they are generally all imitations of existing sports cars. I know imitation is flattery, but in an age of bland-look-alike-euro-shit-boxes, why by an Japanese sports car that looks like something else.
I can imagine the board meetings;
Ah, we need new open top sport car, one that rook rike Rotus Eran - Bing, the MX5 appears
Or
Ah, we need new fast coupe that rook rike Porsche Carrera - Bing, the 300Z is born.
Even that image posted about the new Supra, if that doesn't have any styling cues from DB9/Vanquish them I'm a monkey's uncle.

I think the Jap car debate comes down to this:
A Twin Turbo manual Supra is a 170 mph plus car, with corresponding levels of acceleration . It is rear wheel drive, and by all accounts even EVO tested one and assessed it as very good indeed.
It has climate control, cruise control, all the goodies, and it is built like a Lexus - I.e very well indeed.
It is as easy and practical to own as a Corolla.
And you can get a terrific one for £12-£15k.
What other car can offer this?

Gazboy,
My point was looks rather than function/form. If you take the function/form stance then everything is alike
M3 = C55
Tamora / Boxter / Z4 etc
Z5 = Range Rover
etc, etc,
I don't think the Chimaera has any styling cues from the Corba (shame given the Cobras' goregous looks). The the Holden is certainly nothing like the M5.
My issue is the looks not the form of the car (since as I've said, generally the form of most Jap sports cars are excellent; easy to drive, forgiving, reliable)
Before you argue the toss, the only styling cue TVR may have nicked is the L-shaped light cluster on the back of the T350 (and now the new Tuscan)

Yes, having it start first time on a icy febuary morning is a real bitch, us in Japchat are in therapy because we can't cope with everything working!
Sorry, but if someone finds something unappealing because it actually works, is cost effective and is a fair performer too, it has to be explained?
Do you have a relatively new TV? Or are you using a 50's model with 50's technology?
FFS, it's personal opinion. I'm not (and do not) deride anyone for owning a Jap sports car.
As someone who likes to maintain cars and is relatively hands-on, I find the prospect of something that I can't work on uninteresting.
Steve
Anyway... Back to the original question about PH being "Prejudiced against Rice rockets".
Hopefully I'll make it along to one of the PH gatherings at some point and I'm not expecting to be singled out for abuse due to not owning a car from 'the west'.
I was going to say British then realised that Ferarri et al are 'European'. Then I realised that there's a big contingent of American muscle (always wanted a Viper).
There might be a few who take the p1ss, probably mostly in fun but I know my car is capable of holding it's own agaist a lot of the cars represented here (although the driver isn't neccesarily!).
One of the main differences as I see it between the Japanese scene and 'the rest' is that Jap car often have a lot of body mods where as the others remain largely standard. Some of the mods look rediculous and, regrettably, have probably been responsible for the Chavved-up nova brigade.
We'll see, but I don't think PH is prejudiced in general - it's all about appreciation of the cars.

I have quite a healthy respect for these Jap cars, started when I played the original Gran Turismo and specced up the FTO so it could out handle anything else on the (pixelated) roads!
( that game was also responsible for me wanting fast cars, and knowing so much about the ricers!!!!)
