RE: Castle Combe attacked by local council
Discussion
Complaints about noise to Combe are sadly regular. From previous occasions those complaints come almost entirely from the new properties to the south east of the circuit and not from castle combe village which is sheltered in the valley.
As has been stated it's short sighted herberts who didn't do enough research when they bought their house that are winging, and frankley I think they should be shot! (well ok not actually shot, I wouldn't want Ted to get in trouble... again)
The noise levels have droped noticably in the last 15 years, I used to go up and watch the De Tomaso Action days. If you didn't come away with your ears bleeding you felt short changed

Sirs,
I am writing to express my dismay at the news that the Castle Combe racing circuit has been subjected to a noise nuisance order. I am a marshall at the circuit and a regular user as a driver also. I would like to draw your attention to the following points:
1. The circuit has been in operation since the 1950s. I would seriously doubt whether any of the residents who have complained about noise levels have been living in their properties since before that time, and thus I would assume that they purchased their properties with the knowledge that a circuit was in operation close by. I would argue, therefore, that they are not in any position to complain.
2. Noise levels at the circuit are rigourously controlled, and a strict curfew is in place to appease local residents. These noise levels are set LOWER than acceptable levels for road cars which can legally pass through the village.
3. The events in question account for approximately 6 hours of track time over the last 4 YEARS. How this can be considered a nuisance beggars belief.
4. By the Council's own calculations, these events have generated in the region of £10 million of revenue for the local community. I cannot imagine how large the total amount of revenue generated within the area equates to in total given the large number of race events and other local and charity events that take place at the circuit.
5. The circuit has sucessfully negotiated with motorsport governing bodies for an overall reduction in noise levels for the events in question.
I believe that actions taken to reduce the usage of the circuit will be ultimately detrimental to the local community. If the circuit cannot generate sufficient revenue to operate profitably then it runs the risk of not being able to support loss-making charity events and, worse still, may ultimately close altogether.
The loss of revenue for Wiltshire which would be caused by the decline in visitors to the area should not be suffered to appease the sensibilities of a few people who chose to live within a stone's throw of a race track.
I urge you to quickly and decisively move to withdraw this order to protect the circuit and the local community which it helps to support.
I look forward to your response.

Don't shoot them but the country as a whole would be better without them in our gene pool.
Better still send them to China (on a slow boat) to see what a communist state is really like and it can't harm our competiveness if we reduce Asian IQ levels.
mmmm...i raced at Coombe some years ago and there was a lot of pressure then from the council, which back then was seen as the first move to close the circuit and build houses on the site.
For some reason Coombe has always been at risk, and certialny i do wonder if there is'nt some big hidden agenda here.

Just sent this to all the councilors, local papers etc, only a small thing as the actress said to the Bishop.
To whom it my concern.
Re- Castle Combe racing circuit.
I really can't see why you people are pandering to the moaners and those who complain about noise levels. Most of these miseries are complaining having moved into the area KNOWING full well that there has been a race track there for fifty years. The noise level is well controlled and the circuit provides jobs and entertainment for many people, and the local economy benefits greatly, for God's sake, isn't it time we turned round to these people and simply said, "You knew the race circuit was there when you moved to the area, what do you expect?" Take the politics out of it, when they complain again, ask them how much discount they got off the house they now own when they bought it, as they no doubt used the race track as a method of knocking down the price. They have had a benefit, now pay the price.
Rod Barrett.
The noise testing at Combe is without doubt the most stringent of any UK circuit bar none. There are very strictly enforced curfews in the paddocks, so not even a quick fire up, before, I think it's 9-00am, is permitted.
This coupled with the evening curfew makes the engineers work even more difficult as there is no way of seeing if the damned thing is going to start and run until it is almost too late anyway if your class is one of the first to go.
Any further restrictions will certainly make teams think twice about wasting, time money and effort attending only to be pulled out, as was the TVR, during the race as it happened.
Ban the banners!!!!!!!!!!

I have to put "track day silencers" on my car to do a track day at castle coombe. So if I drive through the village on my way there, (a) i am lost and (b) my car will be 8dB noiser as i drive past their front door than it will be on the track.
Funny old world, innit.
Same here mate.

Sounds good. A quiet pint, obviously.
Unfortunatly this will happen more and more. this area has a bad record for busy body people who have a vision of the countryside from a choclate box.It is an area covered in ex airfields kemble, kevile, wroughton all now host track days and kemble which is an active airfield with the odd Jumbo visiting, had problems becasue of tyre squeal. There is going to be problems for the motoring enthusiast for years to come as ever more people want to interfere in other peoples hobbies. We ban foxhunting, so do you think those people will feel sad at the loss of Combe?
Councils are run by failed busy boddies or worse, someone is out to make a name for them selves on this one and if they get their way it will get worse. I live in Yate near the circuit and feel this issue will be the beginning if not defeated.
All need to write to the council now.

Lord King
Like who is this??
Er, you are obviously too young!
Tom King, the former Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from 1985 until November 1990 and Defense Secretary (1991 to April 1992) one of Mrs T's cabinet members.....
He lives in the next village - Ford on the A420, which is at least a couple of miles away. I suspect he isn't the main protagonist here.
I have lived in the area for almost my entire life and have been visiting Coombe since I was a toddler (good old dad).
This move is quite barby, as has been said CC has some of the most tightly policed noise levels of the UK circuits.
I have just finshed writing my letters and they are on the way.
Good luck to Castle Coombe, but if this does not work, then what next!
