At the Malaysian Grand Prix recently BMW brought in a few historic cars for a pre-race demonstration in the centre of KL.

One of these motors was an F1, and they demoed it.

I only found out about it the next day when I read about it in the papers and saw the photos. If I had known I would've gone bright and early to get front row placement for prime viewing of the Macca as I only live about 20 minutes away.

Gutted - there goes a very close opportunity to see an F1 in person for the first time.

mas - there is a longtail racer for sale (not road legal - £750k) in bright orange.

I will dig out the details.

Thanks! If this is #27R, did this not have a UK plate of CIA 4, belonging to Cars International? I already know about this car!

Just wanted to know how many currently for sale that are possible for viewing?

Thanks for your help.

Cars International is by appointment only too, but the car was at FoS last year and will probably be there this year too. No-one has had an F1 available to view by everyone since the F1 showroom on park lane closed.

It would be rude of me to comment on that livery.

and were your original rims re-furbed? or originally painted in Black at one time?
Not refurbed.
After I had the car painted blue, it was apparent that black wheels would be better.
There are loads of cars that would look better with a wheel colour that is not silver/grey/mush.

Wouldn't be rude, that's fg horrendous, I think is the most distasteful car I've ever seen!

Flemke, I was thinking about something this morning while lying in bed. What happens if you break down?

Companies like Aston Martin have their own recovery service, but who would you call if you had a problem (Ghostbusters? )? Would it just be the equivelent of the AA or RAC in whichever country you were in, or do Mclaren have their own recovery service? Or do you have a special supercar mechanics/car recovery service? I was just thinking as I doubt you'd want a roadside mechanic to be poking around in your engine bay!

I think they have a number they call, and McLaren send someone out by helicopter...?

I particularly like its eye bags, makes it looks like it's had a heavy night on the lash.

I thought this too - isn't there a socket somewhere on the car that you can plug something into and it'll 'tell' the factory what's wrong so that they can come armed with the right tool/parts?

Unfortunately, the modern, multi-spoke designs that look busy and uninspired are the most efficient in strength-to-weight and in brake cooling. So, does one go for classic looks in keeping with the history of the car, or does one go for efficiency and effectiveness?

Indications are that at least one of these cars exist, with the likelihood being two. Apparently this artist was granted special access to draw some of the Sultan of Brunei's more special motors, and this was one of the most eye-popping ones. This photo/scan only publicly surfaced recently. No real photos have ever been seen by any F1 stalker, and the existence of these cars hasn't been confirmed by anyone credible, but there is enough chatter to believe this abomination was indeed born at some point.

This in spite of McLaren's official line (including words from the lips of GM himself I believe) that all 5 LMs were painted papaya orange.

Flemke, just wondering - given the opportunity to procure an LM, would you do it? If not really to drive then just as a way of buying into the F1 legacy, perhaps (apart of course from the rather exclusive privilege of buying into the F1 legacy by actually owning an F1 road car!)? And if so, would it be as a replacement for your cookie monster (operative word here being "monster" or as a showpiece complement?

Paul,

It's not definite, but I probably shall not be at the 'ring then, as I'll be there often before and after.
Have not settled on a final wheel design, but I'm afraid that it won't be a BBS with an ally rim and gold centre.

ok mate, if you decide to go then give us a shout, I'll look out for you

And you'd better believe it!

Over at AutomotiveForums.com there is an F1-specific board, and it is incredible. They have between them virtually every single F1 photo ever published on the net. They maintain a full database and registry of the locations, colours, modifications and owners of each and every F1 produced. They know intricate details, and have virtually memorised Driving Ambition.

One or two of them have had close encounters (passenger rides), which they spent a lot of time engineering due to their love of the cars.

They spend thousands on die cast F1 models.

And here's a kicker - some time last year a couple of them spent some decent time chatting with the great GM himself, and ended up telling him things about the cars he himself didn't know.

Anoraks doesn't even begin to describe them. Stalkers is closer, but still falls far short.

I read the forum from time to time, as I have a deep love for the F1 and it is a treasure trove of information. It was also a lot of fun when Dan Kennedy used to post (Dan used to own a roadcar and one of the five LMs - both were driven regularly), though his posts are nowhere near as comprehensive or as insightful as our own resident owner.

Is he the guy that has a friend (Flibster) on another forum that does a lot of work on his cars? (Or something to that effect)

Edit: Apparently not, that's someone called 'Ben':

Sorry - I made a mistake. The owner of the LM (LM03) was Frank Selldorff. He also has two other road cars in his stable. Rumour has it that this car is now in the hands of a certain Mr. Ralph Lauren, and that it got significantly damaged during a test session shortly post-purchase. McLaren may still be patching it up.

Another LM is a garage queen of a private Japanese collector.

Two are purported to be owned by the Sultan of Brunei, and of that it is said both are in the fancy livery you just saw posted.

I don't know where the fifth one is.

I'm gonna go out now and buy myself a new anorak.

It's chassis #018. suspect very strongly that this car is mechanically similar to chassis #073

Flemke - have you been hassled much by people trying to discover your identity, address, inside leg measurement? (apart from on here of course )
