Well, are we?

It transpires that it is possible to get a 400 to 500bhp, rear wheel drive sports coupe for well under £10,000 to £15,000.

That price should cover finding a good one, and getting some subtle but not over the top tuning done. Much more is possible, but I think 450 bhp should be enough while also maintaining driveability.

The end result will be a fast and very reliable RWD car.

It is of course a Toyota Supra twin turbo.

I happen to not like a lot of Jap performance cars. Not keen on four wheel drive either.

But Supras do look like performance bargains. Its surprising that they are not discussed much round these parts.

Prejudice? Or are they a bit crap and I have not realised this yet?

Which is my point - the Jap chat supporters tend to keep themselves to themselves.

In general gassing, I was wondering if this is fair or not. After all, most of us would accept that while Japanese cars are not everyones cup of tea, they are in the main very well engineered.

Cars like Supras and Skylines are strong and powerful. Granted, the image can be suspect and some of the owners do monstrous things to them with bodykits and such like, but that does not take away the fact that a good Supra or Skyline is a strong, fast and effective bit of kit.

Perhaps some of the excesses of the max power brigade are blinding us to some decent performance cars. After all , a car like a modern Supra is much more sophisticated than any American muscle car, and at least the equal of anything German from a technical point of view.

I'll come clean.

I saw a lovely looking dark grey coupe this morning. As I approached it I realised that it was a Supra. Discretely sat on some nice looking anthracite wheels and with the huge spoiler removed. It looked good. Very good.

And that got me thinking...

Sorry to repost a picture, but what I'd give for this car....

It would still look better without the spoiler.

The spoiler, well spoils it...

Just tips it into the laxxer category. Otherwise , I agree. Its a performance bargain.

Vario - I intended this thread to bring some balance to the jap car issue. I can see that many Jap cars are supremely engineered, and so it therefore makes sense that the hot versions should be pretty interesting.

For me, the site of a de-spoilered , subtle grey Supra with dark coloured wheels attracted me. I thought it looked terrific.

Perhaps it is the tendency for the laxxers to adopt these sort of cars ( and ruin them in the process ) that gives them a bad image.

Does'nt change the fact that they are fine cars, when not messed around too much.

Sorry that the attitudes on this site contributed to turning you off from owning a decent car.

But I can understand. There are some people here with a rather narrow outlook on the world...

Why the hell would you want an Esprit?

Seriously?

That is very nice.

And that yellow thing ought to be chucked in a canal.

Cheers

Pat

Agreed . The MR2 is a perfectly innocent attractive little sportscar. An MR2 with a Ferrari bodykit is best consigned to the skip. That yellow one is a hideous mess.

Can't agree.

Prefer the one without the rear spoiler. The white colour does it no favours, but the lines are better without the spoiler, no doubt about it.

I think the Jap car debate comes down to this:

A Twin Turbo manual Supra is a 170 mph plus car, with corresponding levels of acceleration . It is rear wheel drive, and by all accounts even EVO tested one and assessed it as very good indeed.

It has climate control, cruise control, all the goodies, and it is built like a Lexus - I.e very well indeed.

It is as easy and practical to own as a Corolla.

And you can get a terrific one for £12-£15k.

What other car can offer this?

Take that bloody rear spolier off !

Then it would look great. Some bigger dark alloy wheels would look good too.

Now thats better.

The wheels are a well OTT. They would have to come off straight away.

But the body looks really nice. WAY better without the spoiler.

C'mon, you know its true.

I admit to being a car snob at times, but a nice Supra without the spoilers appeals to me.
