I found it all a bit patronising, he's a fking formula one driver its the minimal expectation to be able to drive around and if enough people fall off pick up a result. Its not like he pulled off any blinding overtakes or nursed a failing car or kept his cool with a hard charging hothead up his ass for 50 laps.
He had a solid quali and was in the points before people started falling off the track.hairyben said:

One of the Sky team was waffling on about Stroll being the real deal and not there because of daddies cash, rubbish, of course the only reason he is there is the cash, he got third because everyone else crashed, went bang, fell off, or bumped into each other

Hopefully he keeps this up for the rest of the year and beyond. I'd love to proven wrong from my initial opinion him.

As easy as it is to jump on the negatives I think the kid deserves credit where it's due. Solid but unspectacular in Baku, cracking drive in Canada with overtakes.

Indeed. He must have been feeling the pressure at the end of the last race with Bottas bearing down on him, so he did well not to make any errors. It'll be interesting to see what the podium does for his confidence and his performance going forward.Hopefully he keeps this up for the rest of the year and beyond. I'd love to proven wrong from my initial opinion him.
He deserves credit for holding it together under great pressure on a very tricky track, which caught out a lot of hugely more experienced drivers. He may ultimately have the Williams seat because of his family money, but lets be honest, no one gets anywhere in F1 without money behind them. He has had a steady if unspectacular single seater career so far, but has satisfied the requirements for his super licence, so in that respect he is there on merit. He had a bad start to the year but has had a couple of good results and is definitely improving. He may not be future WDC material, but he's only eighteen, and could have a solid journeyman career ahead. Remember, when Massa started his F1 career with Sauber, he was so erratic he took a year out and did testing with Ferrari to learn his craft out of the spotlight.

Yet the people falling off couldn't manage the minimal expectation? To finish first, first you must finish.

further to him doing the test in Austin, i also read this..
"This programme is continuing with Stroll scheduled to do an exclusive day of testing in the 2014-spec car between every race, at tracks he hasn't visited, until the end of the season."
That must be costing a fair bit!
I don't think money is an issue here. "This programme is continuing with Stroll scheduled to do an exclusive day of testing in the 2014-spec car between every race, at tracks he hasn't visited, until the end of the season."

Jacques Villeneuve, like myself, gave Stroll the benefit of the doubt as he was announced as Williams driver. Yes, it was common knowledge that Papa Stroll was paying an unprecedented (?) amount of money to put him there but Lance does at least have some racing achievements to his name even if they too were bought and paid for to an extent. Many people are still finding bits of egg up their nostrils having panned 'too young' Max Verstappen.
Being that Stroll scored his first points at the weekend, fellow Canadian Villeneuve's proclamation that Lance Stroll might be the worst rookie in F1 history is as curiously timed as it is scathing.
I too have changed my opinion. Lance is not ready for F1. It puts me on edge to see onboard video from his car- he looks exactly like a wide-eyed kid with far too much car under him, even if out of the car he is managing the disappointments and criticisms very professionally.
Papa Stroll's significant donation also ensured that Lance wouldn't be teamed with another young driver who would show him up so instead he is being shown up by out-of-retirement Felipe Massa.
I am still waiting for significant improvement from Lance for Williams' sake... but I will be astounded if he finds himself gainfully employed in the sport at any point?
Plutocrat in controlling, manipulative behaviour shocker ! ! Being that Stroll scored his first points at the weekend, fellow Canadian Villeneuve's proclamation that Lance Stroll might be the worst rookie in F1 history is as curiously timed as it is scathing.

I'm amazed looking at the onboards that stroll can even string a lap together, he's just so nervous on the wheel. Looks like he is on edge and completely uncomfortable the whole time
Very similar to how his teammate was in his debut year, in fact, and he turned out alright in the end. I think the kid is smart and will learn, and then we'll see if he's really got it or not.The question for me is, will he ever been seen as anything but a pay-driver? Even if he's eventually good enough to be there on merit alone, will any teams be able to see beyond the open cheque book? Now that he's shown the depth of his pockets, will the teams let daddy cut the purse strings?
