I keep reading that JB is popular in japan...what is this based on?

How are people measuring this?

Please don't tell me it's just cause he once drive a Honda and his missus is half Japanese.

These threads need the occasional injection of light hearted humour posts like yours. Good to have giggle now and again. Appreciated.

10 years ago he was a good driver who maybe had the potential to be a champion

Now, he's a past champion in the twilight of his career.
He's only 6 months older than Alonso, and is a more recent WDC
True ... and I'd bet considerably physically fitter in and out of the car. Although they are far easier to drive nowadays fitness is still important.

I think maybe too much is made of JBs ties with Japan.

What Honda have stated they really want is a world class name in the car. Ie: Vettel, Alonso or Hamilton. I think wish may be father of the thought over Honda not wanting their return over-shadowed
Doh, oh yeah, you forgot, Button is world class...

Do you know I think you are on to something there. Mclaren are handling this situation terribly and are showing no respect to Button. I bet if you took a vote at the factory I am pretty sure Alonso isn't on their want list.
You have to question how much better Alonso is than Button, the only point of reference is Hamilton, Alonso was matched by Hamilton as a rookie, Button went to Mclaren and matched, and on overall points, beat a more experienced Hamilton... Both aren't getting any younger and would Alonso do a much better job if next year's car is no better than this year? Personally I doubt it.

My Take on it:

Situation-

Button and Magnusson both want to stay.

McLaren want the “Best divers available” for the long term future of the McLaren Honda resurgence.

Best drivers (in McLaren world) ALO, HAM, VET

VET may not be available now or in the medium term. So, let’s count VET out of this.

HAM may be available for 2016 season.

Drivers available now for the long term- BUT, MAG and possibly ALO

Drivers definitely available for the short term ALO

What is stopping ALO committing for the long term?

Uncertainty as to the performance of the 2015-17 McLaren Honda package.

The desire to get in to the Merc car which may be available for 2016 if HAM decides to leave.

Possibly, no guaranteed No1 status.

Any outcome for BUT & MAG will be direct fallout of who McLaren employ from the “Best Drivers Available” list.

Possible scenarios:

HAM does not extend his contract with Merc (unlikely)- ALO will want a 1yr deal with McLaren and try to get in to Merc for 2016, if they will have him.

Fallout from a ALO one year deal with McLaren if Ron will have a one year deal? I think BUT will go, McLaren will keep MAG in order to develop him and bank on getting HAM back for 2016.

If a one year deal is not offered-ALO Sabbatical.

Fallout of a ALO sabbatical-BUT & MAG stay put for another year at least.

HAM extends a multiyear deal with Merc (Likely)- ALO will sign a Multiyear deal under Ron’s terms. BUT will stay on a 1yr with a Mclaren Option on subsequent years.

Originally I was not really a Button fan but over the years my view has changed a lot and I think he has proved to be a good driver and a worthy champion. Despite (maybe) not being as fast as other drivers he still has a lot to offer and deserves (as much as anyone does) the chance to drive in a top team.

Alonso I liked from the start and is considered by many to be one of the best if not the best driver in F1. Despite this I am starting to think he won his world championships (as most do) in a superior car and since that time has left two teams "early" because things were not right. I cant help think that despite sometimes out driving his car maybe he has lost some of his focus and drive especially when they seem to be looking for excuses / get out clauses / future moves before they have even settled in!

I don't think its as clear as Button>Hamilton>Alonso, it depends on what aspect of their driving you consider. Hamilton had a lot more self-inflicted DNFs than the other two during the Maclaren years. Alonso and Button are very good at finishing races in the top 10, which is rewarded in the recent points scheme, but quite dull. Luckily for Button, no points are handed out on Saturday!

The conclusion I am reaching out of all of this is that Ron Dennis is a bit of a dick, the French guy in charge isn't any better, McL are not as good as they think they are and, if I were a sponsor, I would find all of this faffing around rather off-putting.

McLaren have become a team that is hard to like.

I would be very surprised if JB and his management aren't talking to a few other teams in case the rug is pulled out. My bet Williams would be interested, but they have to weigh up the Massa Failure v Money bags equation.

I bet Hamilton is having a little chuckle about making Alonso and others sweat but I'm sure that's just a consequence of his negotiating strategy with Merc.

Would Williams really take him back after the legal wrangles at the start of his career, when he took them to court to get out of his contract?

Poor decision at the time yes, but if Ron can consider Alonso after costing him $100 million, I'm sure Button would be forgiven. But Massa is going nowhere anyway, he'd signed a 3 year deal and I don't think it can be said he's performance has been that bad this year. He's had more bad luck than mistakes.

I think team Willy trying to get out of Massa's contract would be difficult.
Ron signing that disgraceful poor excuse of an individual (FA) would disgust me & many others.
I can only hope FA has painted himself into a corner and is left without a drive for next year, just desserts IMHO.

Really? Five years ago I may've harboured similar feelings (justified or not), but Fred seems to have matured and is quite the elder statesman now, no?
