Whoever made the decision to bring Hamilton in should be sacked.

Monaco should also be removed from the calendar. Utterly dreadful 'race' from start to finish.

Hats off to Lewis for staying so calm.

Me? I'd have got out just before the tunnel and launched my steering wheel into the Med.

What if they have been responsible for all of his wins?

To avoid the tit for tat, here's an official release from Toto -

Toto Wolff:
"What a crazy day. I don’t think there has ever been a more bittersweet feeling than this one. We have won the Monaco Grand Prix and we have lost the Monaco Grand Prix all at the same time. First of all, we must apologise to Lewis Hamilton. We win and we lose together and what I am proud of in this team is that we take collective responsibility. But this is a day when we simply have to say sorry to our driver, because our mistake cost him the victory here. What happened? In simple terms, we got our numbers wrong. We thought we had the gap for Lewis to take fresh tyres and come back out in the lead behind the Safety Car, ahead of Nico and covering off any risk of another competitor taking fresh tyres. But the calculation was incorrect and he came out in third place. It was our decision to call him in and our mistake, pure and simple; in these situations, a driver trusts his team. Lewis had driven flawlessly until then and really delivered a perfect weekend, with a stunning pole lap and a masterful race. There’s nothing more to say other than to highlight the grace with which he handled the situation; he was a leader and a true sportsman this afternoon. As for Nico Rosberg, he didn’t put a foot wrong all day, and it would be wrong if we didn’t take the time to recognise his achievement: a third consecutive win in Monaco is something only three other drivers in history have achieved before. It is a very special moment indeed and one for him to savour. He didn’t have the pace of Lewis today but, in this sport, you take the victories any way they come. This, too, is motor racing. We now need to stay calm and analyse how we made the mistake this afternoon. We will be harshly self-critical behind closed doors and this experience will make us a better and a stronger team in the races ahead. There is still a very long way to go in this championship and today showed that we have the performance in our car to do the job this year"
Sounds like there's going to be some paddlin's.

It's a shame Vettel split Nico and Lewis. Would Mercedes have asked Nico to move over and let Lewis through and would he have done so?

Flipatron,

interesting question, I wouldn't like to judge how that would have gone. . . . .

If you fired everyone that made a strategy error in f1, you'd not have much left after a few years...

He still came 3rd, not the end of the world for the wdc or wcc.

It says something that the incident involving Lewis's pit stop is documented on page 13 of this thread. How many pages would this thread have if 'that' incident didn't happen?

Is it time for Monaco to be remembered by the history books?

Then what are they doing working in F1?

Surprisingly Wolff didn't seem that upset that his chosen son ended up winning...

We'll see. He would have extended by 7 points, but Nico gained 10 on him today.

The gap now is 10 points. The gap should have been 27.

Errors happen. It maybe a collective decision, in which case that's the merc pitwall gone.

I don't think you understand f1 team decision making. It is very rarely just one man/woman making the decision.

Shame that Hamilton didn't win - no matter whose fault it was. I don't like his personality at all but admire his driving. I don't dislike Rosberg as some seem to do and certainly he was right to celebrate his win, whatever the circumstances. He acknowledged that Hamilton should have won on merit and that is all he needed to do.

BUT ........... Hamilton clouting the 3rd place marker was a tad petulant and unprofessional and in other sports could have had him reprimanded for unsportsmanlike behaviour (yes I KNOW he was feeling wound up but....), and I could barely hear his voice when Ms Perry interviewed him afterwards, so he has to do some work to come back as a stronger person.

AND ............ hardly mentioned but Sportsman of the Day has to go to Ricciardo for giving back his place at the finish to Kvyat after he failed to catch Hamilton. An honourable gesture.

Well, it was part of the deal for Danil to let him past in the first place. But at least both drivers know they can trust the other to honor deals, which is useful.

Yes, I agree.

Much like the NZ cricketers shaking hand with Cook at the end of play.

Sportsmanship is still alive.

Agree on RIC - v sporting behaviour and one of the few times I have seen that by a team. In fact I can't recall the last.

HAM will be fine, as he said he needs to understand it, have 48 hours and then come back. The 3rd place marker was a bit odd, as was the stopping on track in the last lap. I was wondering if we were going to see a proper "Senna" moment there. Has anyone seen an explanation for the stop?

I don't gamble, but I have a a virtual £5 on Vettel finishing 2nd in the WDC.

Good point. Easier and better to do it there than in the full glare of the media, podium and local royalty.
