I tend to agree. What is the motivation for Merc or Williams (if Bottas leaves) to hire Jenson given how he checked out mentally towards the end of last season, appeared burned out and talked frequently about doing other things away from F1? And from Williams point of view they have only just got rid of one ageing and popular but ultimately under performing driver, why would they want to hire another?

At very least Jenson needs a year off but I would be extremely surprised to see him back in F1 at all.

A change is as good as a rest.

I don't think Jenson really wanted to go, but there wasn't much point in trundling around at the back.

Massa's time in F1 is finished. His performances were pretty poor in 2016.

Button being stuck like Alonso in a bus the last few years could be tempted back into the Williams when the car will surely be near the front.

One thing we must not forget is that Mercedes still do not have a driver for 2017. They will have to offer much better terms to Williams if they want to get hold of Bottas but why not just ask Button?

Lewis and Button got on very well at McLaren and I am sure if Button was given the chance of a Mercedes for 2017 he would find it very hard not to say no.

I would actually like to see Button in the Mercedes and you just know the two drivers would bring another Constructors Championship to Mercedes if the car is good.

Why have a geriatric retiree in the car when there is so much young talent to use? If you cant take a chance on a young guy whilst you are at the top of your game, when can you?

Hamilton could quite potentially pack it all in next year, then what do you do? You just lost your prize asset and have a guy who wants to be on the beach in the other seat. It's absurd to want someone like Button or Massa, Bottas isn't exactly the new hot shot either, just a safe pair of hands.

If I were Mercedes I'd go for some young guy, I wouldn't take Pascal, he is too cocky and didn't show any pace in the wet. Get someone from outside F1 who is ballistic.

Intresting rumour: Massa returning from retirement to Williams, enabling Bottas sale to Merc. Might work.

Well Williams have Stroll who is a youngster which would have been great alongside Bottas who is still only 27 years old. I am sure Williams want Bottas to be in the team to have a very good balanced team.

As for Mercedes if Lewis was to retire or move on in 2018 then it is the perfect time as many top drivers will be out of contract in 2018. Mercedes are going to have to get Bottas or just a fill in driver until contract are up or new drivers come forward for GP2 or another series.

This in my view would be perfect for Button on a one year deal so Mercedes have more time to look at different drivers for 2018.

Rosberg has in fact caused Mercedes a huge headache.

BTW geriatric retiree is a pretty negative view of older top class drivers who would show most younger drivers a clean pair of heels.

Just because Verstappen has come on the scene and is a extremely talented driver it does not mean there are any others that good waiting in the wings.

Sainz is very good but again Red Bull will not let him go to Mercedes. To be fair I think Sainz could be in danger of losing his big chance with Ricciardo and Verstappen going no where.

Unfortunately Massa has never been the same driver since is terrible head injury.

He now would be a very poor choice for any team unless at the back of the grid for experience.

His time in F1 is well and truly over.

We are talking about relatively small amounts of pace difference, but in that rarefied environment drivers like Button and Massa are geriatric now.

In theory it would make sense to sign Button for a year, as he knows a lot of the team, from when it was Brawn, and got on OK with LH etc.

But, I agree with others, mentally I think he's already checked-out from F1, so probably only a last resort option 'if' the thought of putting PW in the seat is too unpalatable...and they can't get Bottas.
What Williams do if they let Bottas go is more of a headache for them I think.

Button is not the free agent people are making him out to be, he's still somewhat bound by a McLaren contract until 2018...

Surely not? Massa retired with class with dignity intact.... why return now? He is well past his best (arguably was since his head injury IMO).

Massa might not be the driver he used to be, but he would bring technical consistency to deal with the rule change.

I'm hoping for vettel. Good match for Hamilton, would certainly create some fireworks. Plus he's not happy with the cigarette salesman in charge of his F1 team and wants out.
I doubt very much that Vettel would ever consider going up against Hamilton, he knows what would happen.

It'd be pretty even IF Vettel was on it. His motivation seems to wane without the best car - but he'd likely be in the best, so... it'd be an awesome pairing. Vettel does seem tired of the red stable.
