This thread is a good list of folks who cannot cope with change.

I am afraid good people, that change is enevitable.
Rubbish.

Good change is good.
Bad change is bad.

They sound really poor and the constant short shifting made it even worse.

I think Bernie should do a BMW and pipe some fake noise over the top.

I have seen v12s 'to v8 ... I will go to Canada in June and hope it sounds better in person !!!!!! I'm so disappointed with the sound on the tele ' it was crap! And it make me laugh they are always talking about keeping cost down ' but are always changing the rules .....the v8s where bullet proof. And some things shouldn't go green and F1 is one of them .....if you want to save fuel don't fly so bloody far! They will fly from Monaco to Canada then too England .......really .

Spot on Molly-- We can always change back to Matra and Ferrari V12s, I recall chatting to some Germans at Le Mans and one of them said the best sound he had ever heard was 2 v12 Ferraris in line astern at Spa through the woods as near to a V24 as makes no odds!! Much better than an old badger

Change for the worst is always disappointing though, lets be honest.

The cars now sound truly woeful - as bad as any race car I've ever heard. Sadly now there's too little appeal for me so I doubt I'll be going out my way to watch this season.

Just shows how those in the know can get it so wrong!!!

Sad for Motorsport though.

You know it's bad when even the commentators take the piss.

Did chuckle when Coulthard said they sound like a Massey Ferguson...

He has a point to a degree.

Coulthard appears to have his enthusiasm for Formula Farce well under control.

I was watching the race and the cars were so quiet. When the commentators spoke I couldn't even hear the cars.

May as well have made them diesels.
Come off it. They sound much better than the Le Mans diesel racers.
Sounded like they tried Hamilton on the diesel version.

Dreadful sounding things - got bored with the Aussie GP earlier so went over to YouTube.

3.5 Litre V10's...............

And yes, change is good if it is a change for the better. However puny little 1.6 Litre V6 turbo's that sound as bad as they did today? Not convinced at all.

Been a long time F1 , there was something special about loud bristling v8's and v12's in a times gone past. Today we have a grown up version of scalectrix (spelling) racing. These arethe times we live in pandering to electronics and keeping the greens onside. As Bernie says its all wrong.....they curb the emissions on these new hybrids, deaden the sound yet the convey of trucks brought to these events billowing out diesel emissions smacks of hypocrisy rotten to the core.

How many times have we all gone to a F1 GP and you've a bit to walk to get to your vantage point......the deafening noise of those v8s and v12s especially in hockenheim that sounded like the devil......they made my legs go weak. Today i tried hard to listen to the tv re engine noise......it was grimacing and sad for me to see where F1 has gone.......down the toilet.

Over to you the new generation of 1.6 v6 turbo lovers, you can keep em.

Don't like the sound at all. I liked the high pitched violence of the old engines but these don't do anything for me. I don't think this is a change for the better in regards to F1 as a sport to watch. I definitely won't be going to see any races now as they just don't excite me.

Just watched a couple of YouTube clips of the old v10. Despite what anyone tries to tell you, F1 has lost a massive part of what made it special. Yes, there were turbos before v10's and v8's but for two decades the soundtrack to F1 was genuinely spine tingling. In my mind it was one of the compelling reasons to go and see the cars in the flesh. I'm just glad I got to experience them up close and personal.

Now, where can I go and see a 3.5l v10 in action in this country?

This has been posted on the race thread but to repeat here: today F1 cars were a about 3 seconds per lap slower than 2013, a gap that will by the end of the season be won back.

They did this on 100kg of fuel, vs. 160kg last year.

This tells us the V8s were an anachronism, and not reflective of what the world's best engineers can achieve in 2014.

If you lament the sound of the V8s you might as well wish for the sound of a webber carb fed v12 - this is the sound of modern performance, it doesn't sound like the old ways because the old ways were slower.

(And i know not literally slower - they cannot and should not make the cars faster than 2004 because that's about the safe limit - but doing similar pace on half the energy? That's just much, much better technology )
