True. But, like so much of politics these days, it's not what you do but what you are seen to be doing.
Indeed - like saving around a third of a tank of fuel for a 767 over all the cars over all the races - while still transporting huge numbers of people and quantities of kit all round the world in order to drive round an artificial track in circles for a couple of hours! I reckon they could have saved more fuel by bringing one of the long haul races back to Europe.

(2013 fuel consumption c. 160kg/race, 2014 limit 100kg/race, 22 drivers, 19 races, 767-300 fuel capacity ~75,000kg. OK, you've got qualifying and testing, but they won't all finish the race distance and it's enough to put the savings into context)

[quote=JonRB]The reality of the world we live in right now is that things like F1 have to (at least be seen to) have some relevance to the real world. It's just the reality of the fact that everyone is meant to be tightening their belts and not over-spending, and thinking of the planet (and the children), hugging trees, lowering our carbon footprint, and all that tosh.

Far better that F1 can respond to claims of "pointless gas-guzzling" (and other stupid headline-grabbing phrases) by being at the absolute cutting edge of hybrid technology, than to be legislated out of existence. The fact that the cutting edge of hybrid technology means that the engines produce less noise is an unfortunate side effect. "

I am not so sure; I have never seen a word uttered by or on behalf of the so called green lobby about any form of motor sport. It seems to me that it's a convenient bogeyman to be wheeled out by the self serving interests in F1 to justify increasingly asinine decisions. And irony of ironies, we boast about green F1 (well, some do) and then we run a race in bloody Bahrain(which has an appalling human rights record and endears itself to nobody apart from Ecclestone ) and we run it - yup- in the bloody dark , under a gazillion bulbs .Lots of energy saved there eh ?

No evidence of any threat to legislate F1 out of existence; more sensible to ban fans from watching football matches or the Tour de France live- you'd save more energy .

I am absolutely for clever stuff being done in motor sport - which comprises far far more than F1 of course - Le Mans is an ideal medium for the brilliant technology which Audi et al are showcasing with diesels and hybrids and Formula E is a decent enough initiative in its own way . But F1 should be at the top of the pyramid, freed from artifice like DRS etc and scarily powerful , difficult to drive and bloody noisy . The V8s were loud if samey and I do not miss them ; but the V8s 10s and 12s were spine tingling- come to that so was the sublime Ferrari 246 GP car - with - gosh - a V6. But a very very loud one indeed.

A friend of mine went to the Spanish Grand Prix and wondered what all the fuss was about.
"They're still bloody loud, with some wearing ear defenders"
So maybe they just need to improve the TV sound production?

Funnily enough I came to the same conclusion last night watching Indycar, they are much louder on TV than the F1 cars, and given the similarities in engine configuration and power, I find it hard to believe the are much louder in reality.

I think Mr. E's TV production company needs to use some of it's massive profits to fund some better microphones....

Ah, I think we just got to the root of the problem!

You could put a mike right up the tailpipe the sound is bad it is not just the volume.

What seems clear is that people only watch racing for the noise and not the racing?!!!
11 posts and 1 month on PH suggest you have a lot to learn.

What you suggest is completely untrue.

I want spectacular racing AND loud engines. Why do you think I can only have one or the other?

I didnt say that at all. My point is aimed at those who refuse to watch because they dislike the sound.

The other comment was a bit of a wind up smile

Obviously the average Piston Head user cares a lot about the aesthetic of the noise. I personally want to see great racing. The noise produced is part of the package, be it loud, screaming, throaty or non existent. And these engines have their own unique sound, which is interesting to listen to.

Ive been attending Grand Prix since 1996...I think. Ive heard all sorts of sounds. And tbh last year at Monza the wow factor of the scream wore off pretty quick, and became a pain in the ear! Plus the racing was crap, so it was a let down in those respects.

Most of the complaints listed here could be tabled at any professional sport. When you choose to follow something that is a mutil billion pound global industry, there's going to be many changes that don't always make sense to every paying fan. The TV audiences and the sponsors are the only parties that get a vote.

On the specific topic, I really didn't like the noise of the V8s. It was white noise to me. I guess for everyone who is turned off by the lack of volume, there will be someone who enjoys seeing the cars look so much more of a handful and enjoys the complexity of the current sound.

Because ? Is this the cyber equivalent of being hostile to newcomers to the village? I suspect that our poster may have seen more Grands Prix than many - and the fact he hasn't wasted as much time sharing opinions on PH as I may have doesn't in any way invalidate his view I would suggest. I might take a stricter line on the hordes who share their opinion on GP racing when the closest some have got is watching it from their sofa.

Well speaking as a newb I have to say that my appreciation of the latest F1 'sound' has indeed somewhat diminished.

I was at the Spanish GP and I have to tell you that the cars sounded awful, just way too quiet and to be honest the pure spectacle of seeing and hearing an F1 car has gone, I can honestly say that GP2 was more of a spectacle and the racing is great too!

As for your comment regarding ear defenders, you must be kidding! unless it was for the GP2 cars of course because the F1 cars sound little better than a strangled fart.

If you are a regular attendee at Silverstone each year and have tickets for this year, prepare to be very disappointed indeed!I am seriously considering selling my weekend tickets and doing something else instead.

I see many comments from people who apparently don't see what the fuss is about and still think the cars sound OK but I can only assume you only follow the sport on TV, if you only watch it on TV it really doesn't matter a bit but if like me and thousands of others you fork out a fortune to actually attend a few races each year, it really is a big deal because the incredible spectacle of live F1 is no more.

I can see this becoming more of an issue next year when ticket sales are down because all the regulars who go to the races each year decide that it is not quite so appealing anymore after attending this years races. I wont be bothering next year unless they make the cars sound like an F1 car should sound, I will still follow the sport on TV of course but won't be forking out for tickets which is a massive shame.

Sort it out Bernie!

Just watching Practice 1 at Monaco.

I am sorry but they just sound terrible. Its such a gruff, monotone sound.

I know we will just have to get used to it, but its just sad.

It wont be changing anytime soon, the only way to alter the noise is to completely change the powertrain regs, and that isn't going to happen.

Oh my god!

They really destroyed all pre-2014 F1 cars? They're gone forever? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I'm never going to watch F1 again. What time is Qualifying on?
confused are you suggesting that next year we give all the teams a choice of classic F1 cars to run? Cracking idea but I doubt it'll catch on with Bernie and the ecomentalists.
