You only need to see Lewis’s reaction when he was gifted the race. It sucks.
Once the team understand where their performance is today, I still feel it would be better to give Lewis a development engine for the last couple of races - that will allow Valteri to prove himself.
You may be right but personally I can’t see Mercedes doing anything that may risk the WCC.Once the team understand where their performance is today, I still feel it would be better to give Lewis a development engine for the last couple of races - that will allow Valteri to prove himself.
Bottas wont want it but I'm sure he'd rather finish 3rd in the WDC than 4th.
He's only 9 points behind Kimi and arguably should be ahead without giving up places for Lewis. I know there is no prize money at stake and Merc have probably already given him a little bonus for helping lewis but stats matter.
Interestingly for me at least is that despite this season's close battle between Ham and Vet, Hamilton is only 5 points behind his 2017 total with 2 races to go. Vettel needs 23 points from the last 2 races to match 2017.
Kimi is already 31 points up on 2017 with 2 races left, hes the reason Ferrari are still in the WCC

In my view a handed win to Bottas here goes against the spirit of racing. The WDC is already secured and no one should want to see an unnecessary gifted P1. Least of all Bottas. Certainly if it were me I’d regard it as incredibly condescending and would probably hand the lead back again
Have to agree. We’ve already seen one unnecessarily gifted P1, though that wasn’t handed back. rdjohn said:

how would giving lewis a development engine allow bottas to prove himself? surely for Bottas to prove himself youd want him to have equal machinery Once the team understand where their performance is today, I still feel it would be better to give Lewis a development engine for the last couple of races - that will allow Valteri to prove himself.

Out of interest, if Bottas hadn't given the Lewis the win, would he still have tied up the WDC in Mexico, or would it have gone on to Brazil?
all else being equal, yes, but as one of the reasonings for the switch was bottas backing Lewis into seb whose to speculate what might have played out.Mr_Thyroid said:
The best they could/should do to repay Bottas is to give him preferential strategy in qualifying and pitstop order in the remaining two races.
If I was Bottas, I wouldn't want any special treatment. Nothing artificial or contrived. Just the usual process they have for a race weekend and let it play out. If he is to win, win on merit, not because it was handed to me.HighwayStar said:

I'm with you. If you're a racer at heart you want to win by winning, not by being handed some kind of pity gift.37chevy said:

Does anyone remember Mansell handing a win to Patrese in 1992.... it was horrible, especially the way he did it.
How did he do it? All I can see on YT is the directory concentrating on Aguri Suzuki when the pass happens?cb1965 said:
