Rosberg shouldn't have been penalised in Malaysia in my opinion, but being that he was I'm astounded Alonso got away with that. As somebody has already said, the stewards have once again proven themselves consistently inconsistent.
I think this is my position too. I'm all in favour of aggressive overtakes and thought Alonso's was borderline but still acceptable. Trouble is, Rosberg's was very, very similar but treated differently.oyster said:
You'll have to explain better I'm afraid as 2 things don't add up.
1. Massa was already turning left, so are you saying he put even more left lock?
2. How can Massa turning left into Alonso make them BOTH go wide to the right? The physics just don't add up I'm afraid.
1. Yes Massa was turning left but that was the problem. Alonso was there. Massa starting to turn left then saw Alonso but then turned left again. Check the footage. If he wanted to avoid contact he could have kept the steering wheel straight after spotting him instead of turning in again. You can tell there is no loved lost between these too.1. 2. When Massa turned into Alonso it was the rear tyres which hit as well as the front tyres. The collision unsettles both cars which causes them both to go wide. It may have looked small but rubbing tyres unsettles the car tremendously.
It was a hard move by Alonso but only due to Massa sleeping.

nah, the only differences between them was Rosberg/Kimi wasn't exactly wheel to wheel (hence the damage) ...& Austin wasn't on Derek Warwick's watch
Which raises the question, why don't we have the same stewards for each race? surely it's not that hard/expensive to have the same panel at each race every 2 weeks?

Perhaps my recollection is off but Alonso's collision with Massa looked much heavier than Rosberg's with Raikkonen to me. Also ISTR Raikkonen just lost a bit of carbon fibre the size of a credit card from his front wing while Massa had to pit for a puncture? Not very scientific I know, but Alonso / Massa also looked heavier and at a higher speed and with a greater difference in speed between the cars. The way I see it, Alonso really overcommitted to the corner and was depending on some compliance from Massa.
The difference as I saw it is that Alonso appeared at the Apex alongside Massa before they turned in wheras Rosbergs move on Kimi seemed to happen as Kimi had already turned and couldn't have done much about it.
Of course whether Massa or Alonso could ever have made it without colliding is another question, but TBH I don't have a problem with either overtake.

The way I see it is this.
Alonso:Massa, when Alonso went up the inside he was in control of the car at the time, he was able to stop for the apex and make the corner, all would have been well in the world if Massa hand not turned into him.
Nico:Kimi, Nico was not in full control of the car he managed to get a nice bit of oversteer on and hit Kimi. I also think his previous overtaking/defending "attempts" probably put him in a category where the stewards probably wanted to slap his wrist a bit.

Rosberg was penalised to try and keep the championship close
I think he was penalised because of his earlier moves in the season on Hamilton, then Verstappen prejudicing the case against him. Had he kept his nose clean until then, I don't think h'd have been penalised for it.Gassing Station | Formula 1 | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
