Finally at long last, and aparently just in time (it going to rain tonight)the man in the van fron FLEET MOBILE tyres (If you're in the cambridge area, call these guys they're good, C.262097) came to work this morning, and put some lovely new Toyo proxy T1-S's.

Considering she has been running on Yokohama A539's for the last two years, has any one else made a similar change, and know how these two tyres compare. Will the character of the car change dramatically, or just be improved? (as you can tell I haven't driven on the new tyres yet)

I have always been very impressed by the Yokohamas, which, even when almost as bald as Dr.Mouse snr himself, still had stunning grip, strangely even in the wet.

Have to say the Toyo's look fantastic, and the "V" pattern tread will be good for the wet too.

Any warnings before I finish work, and attempt to kill myself on a roundabout would probably be useful.

... judging by the post mortum of BT&P, I wish I had been there. Well deffinately next year. If the letter Im putting in the post this afternoon is sucessful, you guys and gals may even be quite interested to speak to me.....see you all later.

Just remember to give the tyres a few easy miles before thrashing them!

Dangermouse: In my experience (although I've never had the chance to sample A359s and T1s's on the same car in rapid succession i can't really comment but yes, the T1-S is a great tyre and pretty much anything in the Toyo Proxes range has always given me a very pleasent suprise.
I personally drive Goodyear Eagle F1's and these have surpassed any pure road tyre I have driven thus far..... wet grip is higher than many other "performance" tyres can muster in the dry.
Having said that, in NZ we have very coarse "volcanic chip" roading surface over about 90% of our roads, a surface with vastly different qualities than the hot-mix bitumen found over in the UK so this may be a factor but I definitely think you'll find the T1-S won't be a let-down.... tell me what you think once you get some miles on them as I'd be keen to know too.

PS Driving Eagle F1's I can vouch for the appeal of the deep-vee tread pattern.... just the other day I had a nubile young girly walk past and go "ooh nice tyres"..... pity she was aonly about 15 and wearing skank-pants or else I'd have been tempted to "do a Mungo"

Reporting back after a couple of days and I can honestly say the silion coat exists purely in the "passe compose".

My God those things stick! They cut standing water like a razor. The A539's, even when new, were like taking a rhino for a walk through puddles.

It was all sqirmy and 'orrible for a while, but its all settled back down now. The wierdest thing was that Twink suddenly felt all rolly-polly. I was wondering if Mr Man-in-the-van had busted a rear anti-roll bar mounting.

He hadn't. It was just that the T1-S's hang on so well that you don't notice you're caning round coners 5Mph faster, so of corse there's more roll.

I reckon I'll put on some drop spings on her (I've been told 30mm is the best for handling the the CR-X) after the new brake pads, that should quell the roll. Then I'll get the 4 wheel allignment redone and She'll be a real weapon.

Oh and they do look the absolute boll.........

I can vouch for the Mouse's new tyres looking the mutts, even in the rear view mirror they were positively resplendent!

Nooooo! If you lower it you will screw up the camber on the front wheels (non-adjustable) and it'll go all over the place on rough roads. Wet grip is also reduced.

Trust me - one of our CRXs is lowered 30mm and has Koni adjustable dampers, the other is standard. Both run on the same tyres in winter and the one with the standard springs has much more grip in the wet and it's far more stable on rough roads.
I lowered/stiffened my CRX for dry track use and in the dry (on cut slicks in the summer) it has huge grip. If Twink is your only car think carefully.
If you'd like a test ride in my CRX before you buy post here and I'll change my profile e-mail to one that works...

OK I'll keep her the height she is then. Loads of lolly saved.

Thanks Mate

What about decent dampers though, are they worth it?

I Wasn't too happy about dropping Twink anyway 'cos she already drags her nose on the driveway to my mountaineering club HQ, so if she was lower, I'd have to take a different car to Wales

Maybe putting some thought into stiffening up the shell might yeild more profitable results. I've been trying to think of a way to put in a rear strut brace without making the boot unusable. I carry a bike in the back nearly every day you see. Maybe a half cage with a removable cross brace might work. I bet rollcentre would have ideas.

In answer to your offer though, I'd love to meet up some and discuss jap-scrap over a beer and see your rexxes.

Koni adjustables are fantastic - unfortunately I fitted them after I did the springs so I'm not sure how they work with standard springs. I did have Koni adjustables on one of my MR2s and they worked really well with the standard springs - huge range of adjustment from floating/wallowing to rock hard (didn't stop my brother crashing it though ).
Spookily enough I have fitted a steel rear strut brace (worried about that huge boot opening making the back end floppy). I can still get a bike in the boot but it does tend to scratch the paint off the strut brace (too lazy to tape a rag over it). I have heard of people have insurance problems after fitting a cage - that said insurance companies don't like anything.

Profile e-mail is now working - send me a mail and I'll get a bit more specific about where I live so we can have a CRX fest.

Yep that was the reason I was thinking of getting it too.

My guess is the centre section is a bit floppy too. The car is a lot quieter if you drive with the sunroof open, as the seals creak as the car jiggles over bumps.

A rear strutbrace will probably make the centre twist more but at least the rear suspension geometry will be kept more constant... if you see what I mean.

Back on thread, the just tyres get better and better. They really work the rear suspension in a way the Yoko's never did and rearwheel steer effect is really noticable. 4wheel drift-ago-go!

On meeting up... deffinately, I'll mail you offline about that very soon, look forward to meeting you and seeing your managerie...and your cars too
