EG: Testicular and Prostate.

Following on from WD's thread I have started thinking about this. It would appear that very few campaigns, advertising and media support are around to support "male" cancer charities.

I have actually e-mailed the GadgetShop this evening to enquire about the prospect of them supporting a male cancer charity based on the idea that they are (to me at least) a shopping chain for blokes really and also that there appears to be very little commercial support out there at the moment.

I know it's an embarassing topic of conversation, but I feel that it's one that should be more in the public arena.

So... are there any more companies that you might feel are "generally" male orientated that might want a little exposure by helping out their community?

For some reason I have developed myself a little bee in my bonnet about this and will be contacting Everyman and other charities tomorrow to see how I can help.

Cheers

Phil

Given Lance Armstrong's recovery from testicular cancer and his notable achievements since, it could be worthwhile approaching some of large cycling chains.. Evans, Bikehut (Halfords), Edinburgh Bicycle, Alpine Bikes, Wiggle.co.uk, Orange, Pace etc.....

Doh!! Good call. Any one with anymore? Do you think beer companies would be interested at all? How about pub chains?

Doubt pubs would - aren't they trying to ignore teh whole liver/kidney/pancreas disease thing that *is* brought about by drinking excessively - can also lead to cancer in said organs.

Same as the smokers/lung cancer thing.

At the very least the *lads* mags, FHM, Loaded, Mens Health etc should make aware if not actively support IMO.

Got any good webpages to direct to for more info...?

Not yet - have only just started thinking of this and deciding to get involved - the Everyman site appears to be the main one within the UK: www.icr.ac.uk/everyman/ and they have some company support it seems: Topman, The Cricketer International?, Marks and Spencer, Asda, Office Green?, Punk'n'funk? Fashion-a-ball? and King of Shaves are the only companies listed.

Surely there should be more?

I feel that there is some work to do here and so I will spend some time writing to a few companies after contacting Everyman to find out what they need.

Cheers

Well how about this. Why don't we do something?

I know ted has got events going on and is unlikely to have the time to give us endorsement, but as a group of friends we can do something.

How about arranging something fun. The point of the love oil and other things that you can buy which donate is that you are getting something in return for your donations.

How about we arrange a night where everyone that is able to goes to their local meet and does something fun, for example having a bbq, or going lazer-questing where you pay a donation to participate, and all these donations can be donated to the charitys of our choice, for example, split between a male and a female charity.

How does that sound? At least that way we are all making a contribution without some company taking a cut which will please certain members on here...

manginger, if you need any help phoning around, I'm off tomorow and all of next week. (my Fathers thing has stalled while the Concervatives sort out a leadership race, and they can't multitask, so the dads lose out.

Thanks - I will get in touch with Everyman tomorrow to see if they have any packs of info. or anything along those lines - really I don't have a clue about this kind of thing. I'll post again on here once I know something.

I must admit I really like the idea of "balls-out racing" or something along those lines.

I really fell as though we can do something here to help and so will put some thought into it and see what happens.

So hows this?

November 19th, each group selects an activity, an attendence fee is paid by all, suggested £5, a fun night is had by all and the proceeds are split between a male and a female cancer charity.

How is that?

www.tacheback.com/

"The aim of Tacheback is simple: to return the moustache to its rightful place as a must-have fashion accessory, and to raise funds for research into male cancers in the process."

Quality! How about all blokes turn up at BTaP with a moustache? get sponsorship from your friends?

Could make for some rather amusing photos I must admit!

My two previous expeditions supported The Orchid Cancer Appeal - www.orchid-cancer.org.uk - the UK's first male cancer charity.

So far this year I've raised nearly £15k. Drop me a line if you'd like to get involved - I'll be fundraising for Orchid again in 2004...

I have seen something going around for male cancer, probably it was Everyman's stuff. At my uni also they have this big poster with a chunky chap saying "you think you're invincible? i bet you are" or something of the sort, dealing with male cancer.

Female cancer is much more advertised because of its recurrence despite screening... and probably because breasts are more politically correct than b*ll*cks. In Spain, any money you give is for Cancer research in general, which is the right thing (it is not nice to forget about other types of cancer that also kill people...)
Think also, as males, on the amount of times you have to go to the doc to have them checked out... Women have to do it at least once a year. Screening should be more frequent to avoid risks.

Still... you could have that "balls" campaign... Wouldn't it be fun to have a whole lot of round things for people to buy and so donate money to the cause: table tennis balls, golf balls... etc. I think that the companies that should be more into this kind of thing are obviously sports related.

Remember that any kind of party or meeting that you make could also spare a percentage of the money collected from drinks, and it is as easy as getting it all in a box and take it to the appropriate charity. Sponsored runs, sponsored polar expeditions... what they are doing at my college at the moment is a "date auction" (given the scarce amount of ladies among PH's, you'd get a good deal of money out of that!

Oh well... i have no more ideas. Just trying to help.
