Worked my ass off to get some capital in the bank, now I've got that I'm hoping to spend it on my first car.

Budget is £2000, that's what I want to spend on the car as I've saved some for insurance (parents are paying the rest for Christmas)

Links would be preferable too

Thanks guys

Peugeot 306 HDI/TDI etc..... Can't go faster for less insurance premiums. 40+ mpg and actualy a half decent drive. All my mates had one as a first car from my advice. All depends though, on what you want/preference

Fiesta Zetec 1.25.

Not amazing, but you dont need amazing yet, spend quater of your funds get yourself a run around for a year so you have no claims bonus behind you..

The 1.25 is suprisingly nippy, cheap to replace parts (as theres 1000's in scappys) and a good laugh... I wouldnt spend big on your first car, as the ammount of yound lads ive seen with written off 2k+ cars is unreal... get a banger have some fun, get some experience then spend your money imo.

I know this is pistonheads but resist the urge to buy something:

  • Fast
  • Unreliable and Prone to expensive bill
Honestly get something slow and reliable to ease you into car ownership. I resented driving a 1 litre Peugeot at the time but I look back now and think it was the best way to get into car ownership.

Something classic. Probably avoid the popular classics to avoid the premium they fetch, like Minis.

My little brother started driving last year, and built himself a lovely MG Midget with lots of trick bits. It's still just a 998cc engine, but great fun and drives really well. It's fairly modified (roll bar, suspension, brakes etc) but he pays something like £600 fully comp on a classic policy with Footman James. Could be worth looking into - something like a Mini, Midget or other similar classic. Not the safest cars in the world but a bit more interesting than a modern Fiesta and is a great introduction into car maintenance and simple car handling etc!

MX5? Mine is 20 years old, fun, costs peanuts to run and just won't die. Gay roof though.

My first car was a 2CV, because it was free. It was slow, dreadful and parts of the exhaust were always falling off, but it was also amazing fun, mostly because it was my first car. I think pretty much any car will do as a first car, as long as it's reliable enough that you get to enjoy driving it.

My girlfriend's brother is also looking for a first car.

He really wants a Corsa and for the life of me I cannot figure out why! It's because all his friends have them, but I'm one for being a little different and going for something out of the norm, not following the sheep!

I couldn't ever drive a boring eco box around. I'd much rather look for something classic, be a little different and save a fortune on insurance!

But that's just me. My first car was a 1980 Mini 1000 convertible. smile

Avoid anything small and French, so saxo's, clio's, 106's out.

Insurance on them are crazy from all of the 17 year olds smashing them up.

Go for a small engined fiesta, or head down the classic/older route. Get a 1.3 mk2 Golf or something like that.

I'm pretty out of touch with insurance for young people these days.

I only passed my test ten years ago, but I paid £700/year on my first car.

So insurance on this might be crippling:

http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...

But looks like a tidy car. I think they look pretty nice, generally pretty reliable cars, but as I say, no idea about insurance.

Actually, I looked at a few links, then posted the wrong one, that one's modified, not a good idea for a first car. Still, you get the idea.
Nice car, but insurance for that now would be £1600 ish at a guess... 1.6, 100+BHp, honda, saying that lads insurnace is due to go down soon and womens go up?? i wonder how much??

I fully agree with this! Lots of fun to be had with a simple classic, and will teach you plenty in terms of mechanics too. Just make sure you buy something with as little rust as possible, the rest is relatively easy.
