Rapid estate cars v diesel estate
Discussion
Hardly an exciting topic maybe but I'm on the lookout for an estate car. Have been primarily looking at diesels but trying to convince myself a quick petrol estate wouldn't be too bad on fuel in comparison. I'm likely to be doing 12k miles p.a, budget up to £5k.
Quick petrol variants I've looked at:
Alfa 156 GTA 3.2
Ford Mondeo 2.5T
Subaru Impreza WRX
Vauxhall Vectra 2.8T VXR
VW Passat 2.8 V6 4motion
Volvo V70 T5 2.3
I've excluded anything Audi/BMW/Merc as you get comparitively little for the money and having just had a Merc, scared by the costs should things go wrong (I realise any car has a potential to break the bank).
The alternatives would be diesels like
Accord 2.2CDTi
Mondeo 2.0 TDCi 140
Are there further petrol versions I should consider and am I mad to go for a 25-30mpg over a 50mpg one at the miles I do, also taking the VED into account?
Liking the brute power of the Vectra but having had one previously, the Impreza floats my boat

I love fast petrol estates.
Gotta say a 330i would do it for me too, but I know what you mean about getting more for your money with other manufacturers. I was a whisker away from an E46 Touring last year and ended up buying an Accord simply because it was newer, had half the miles and a much much much better spec for the same money.

Unless you drive like a Vicar the CDTI will not do more than 45/6. That's 10% less than you are expecting. The clutches can be weak on some cars, although mines@185k on original its a pure motorway machine so does very few changes. 40-50k is known on some. Honda want 700 notes plus another 700 if the end is borked. A paddle clutch and flywheel is available for 900 fitted though.
As someone who went from a v70 lpg t5 to the Honda, the h is a capable if boring thing. The Volvo was much more fun to drive and with lpg I averaged the same level of economy (but drive it harder and faster). It also was better equipped and wore its miles better. The Honda is@ 7 years old scratched due to Honda soft paint, the drivers seat is shiny and beginning to sag where the v70 with another 50k was no where near as bad

My forte is fast wagen/avant/touring/estates.
Out of your list and choices I'd probably go for the VW Passat 4 Motion but as said a BMW 330i is a good suggestion. I'd also look at an older Audi S4 (B5) with the 2.7 V6 Bi-turbo engine as it's a damn fine car and they can be had a good prices now, yes it will be older but will be a better motor than the ones on your list. Also look at the newer V8 powered S4 (B6) as that's a great motor too.
Don't go for the diesel, you will live to regret it.

I had an S6 Avant with that motor in it and I used to get around 17mpg. Not quite what the OP's after I reckon. Oh the noise it made though!!

If you like the Scooby but want more from your interior, try the Legacy.
Again, pretty sure the MPG on the 3.0 Legacy's is diabolical.Saab 9-5 Aero would be something to have a look at too. I'd ignore the diesel version though, shares the old 2.2 engine from the vectras that is a bit unrefined.
However for your budget could get you a beauty of V70 D5, for a diesel its a very nice engine much more refined than any 4 pot diesels for the dollar. Gorgeous place to be too with comfy seats, fantastic stereo and acres of space in the back.
