Buying my 530d from a main dealer this week I was staggered by the utter bs the salesman kept sprouting.
I believe it was someone on here who said that the only thing the salesman knows about your car is the price but this was extreme.

Having bought 2 BMWs from this dealer in the last 2 months the salesman asks was the reason we have bought a 118d & a 530d BMW's brand image?
I reply that actually I have had about 5 BMW's over the years but nothing post 1990, but have a lot of respect for the history of the brand and the engineering, something about the 5 series being the core of the brand...

He then says yes, but BMW only really got big after they let James Bond drive a 5 series in that film where the car gets driven by a mobile phone!!!!!!!

Seriously? Not back to back ETC victories? Has he never heard of Nelson Piquet? How about Aero engines since WW1? Or the first German Jets?

Thought about calling him on it but will wait until the car is collected before doing that.

Has anyone had similar experiences of having someone working in sales in an environment they neither know or care nothing about?

It was a 7 anyway, and I think it was a 750 badge but was actually a rebadged 740 they used.

I miss my E38s frown

I have been amazed by this a few times over the years, in fact i have walked away from a car because the BS and total lack of knowledge put me off the dealership never mind the car.

I am just a simple punter off the street and often have more knowledge of the product being sold and the guy selling it!

Salespersons: Making smelly noise out a hole in their body in an attempt to make the sale since the day they signed the employment contract.

Was test driving an e90 M3 Saloon back in 2008 at a BMW main dealer:

Me: Amazing car but a bit above my budget

Salesman: ok, have you looked at the e46 M3 Saloon?

Me: e46 M3 Saloon?

Salesman: Yup great cars with 4 doors like this one

Me: errrrr....got any in stock?

Salesman: nah I don't think so, I can call you when we get one in though

Me: I'll be waiting

I once called into Audi Nottingham. One Salesman came out and was all over my car, gushing in his praise.
A few minutes later another Salesman came out, looked puzzled and asked what it was.
I was driving an Ur-quattro rolleyes

Looking at a Brand new Leon FR, salesman tries to sell me their demo SE spec at a discount. (had tiny wheels, high soft suspension, not as nice bumpers and much less kit)

"Are you really going to pay 4k more for simply a badge?"

I guess they didn't give him a job at the Audi dealership then

Hardly surprising the mind boggling lack of product knowledge when most sales jobs make a point of emphasising "no knowledge of product neccessary" hehe as full training will be given.....rofl

Cue full training in bullshicensoredlaughbiglaughhehe

To be fair I've never relied on a salesman for product knowlege, I just google stuff and buy what I want.

"I can only keep this offer today"

Why? What happens to the offer tomorrow? Or next week? Is my money no good then? Do you expect me to believe that if I come back in a weeks time with the cash you'd say "Sorry, last weeks offer was for last week, not it's £x more..."

There is one fundamental thing you should do when salesman start talking.

Put your hands over you ears and shout LALALALALALALA.......

Seriously, always buy the car not the crap.

Partly why I failed miserably as a car salesman....I was passionate about cars, and wanted my customers to buy the car they actually wanted !! Not good when the garage is interested purely in numbers and couldn't give a flying fk about its customers ..
Hated the bullst other "sales professionals" used to come out with.
