After a debate with some friends about whether you would own a saloon with a snazzy badge, or go for simple practicality, I thought I'd ask. As you know, we went with the Ford. The Ford out lasted the very BMW my dad test drove, and it's still going now. On numerous occassions the Ford has out accelerated BMW drivers who try to over take it, in their 520i's. The Ford averages 44mpg at 80mph on motorway cruises. Does anyone else think that some of these BMWs are a little over rated, and that the humble Ford Mondeo is actually a damn good car at what it does?

I had a '98 Mondeo 2 ltr with 70k on the clock, I now run a '85 520 with 65k on the clock, they are in a different league.

BMW everytime.

I got rid of my Subaru and bought an old 98 Mondeo Si with 53k on the clock - was a bit of a come down compared to 260bhp but all in all not a bad car, now i've loosened it up it is pretty nippy and i have surprised a lot of suposedly quicker cars, had 135mph showing on the continent, and gets to a ton pretty quickly. Handling whilst not having the grip of teh Subaru it has lovely steering feel and gandles nice and tidy - really easy to chuck around, plus not too quick to get you in big trouble with the old Bill.

hankering after something a bit quicker but for 900 quid it has never let me down starts on the button and has cost me nothing - unlike that damn Scooby

I read a book about these ages ago so I know what i'm talking about.

Give the BMW an engine that can move it, and a decent trim level - and it will be the better car, but will cost a lot more.

I'd say it reinforces the fact that he can't help it, given his genetic material.

Welcome to PH - 1 month old and what a response. Welcome, you'll fit right in here being a bitter and twisted bmw owner.

However i wonder how the OP and his dad knew they were pulling away from 520's when the only way you can tell if its a 520 is by the badge, and if they were trying to overtake, that infers they didnt, so you would never have seen the badge. If you get what i mean.

By the way, BMW every time.

hehe yes Beat me to it.

Cretins who accelerate as you try and overtake them really do grind my gears, it is dangerous and stupid.

Because every other 5 series variant would have gone flying past!

Tell your Dad to buy something interesting next time.
Both cars are the equivalent of a wet weekend in Wales sleep

Actually I was loaned (I use the term loosely) a 2.0 mondeo whilst my car was being resprayed and it was a hoot to drive around to be honest.

Having said that, it wasn't exactly driven as if it was my own and I could never see myself owning something like that without crying myself to sleep at night. hehe

HAHAHAHAHAHA! Mate my dad could afford a 150000 lambo if he wanted it, but he doesn't. He was under the impression Beemers were fantastic cars, and this was ruined as soon as he drove the Mondeo. Better steering, better acceleration, better price....oh, and it hasn't blown up. I just feel so many people buy certains cars because of the badge, and it just screams out to me that they are too bothered what other people think of them. Inscurity over brains, is what I say.

And saying things like that means you're a tit. BMW drivers are, more often than not, cocks, and deserve to be humiliated.

But you're a cock as well, so does that mean you deserve to be humiliated?

Out of interest, what type of car do you drive?
