What car should I get post apocalypse?
Discussion
I’ll set the scene. It’s Early winter and you’ve awaken to find society has crumbled around you. The economical climate has led to hordes of shambolic “John Romero-esque” credit crunched demons who relentlessly pursue the employed. Powered by vodka mixed with energy drinks, nicotine and enraged by their financial status they are incoherent and incredibly vicious. The armed forces have all long died after Blair's oil wars so help isn't coming...
Fortunately you’ve already stocked up on provisions (baked beans, spam, corned beef, tomato soup, Kestrel super strength) and you took the time to apply for your shotgun licence some time ago so you’ve covered the basics. But the time has come to choose a vehicle.
The problems are;
(1) Economy – Fuel requires visits to petrol stations that are now filled with the damned and their poor credit history and whilst the staff being dead leads only to a minor decrease in their intellectual abilities not needing to gas up every few miles is important!
(2) Torque- Dead bodies and burnt out cars need a good bit of pushing to overcome...
(3) Real world Speed/Handling - The reanimated track suit wearing hordes can presumably run quickly with those Nike Air Max trainers because after all they did come at the cost of the whole of society...
Whilst my initial inclination would be to go and steal a 4x4 diesel defender. I’m thinking an RS4 Avant would be a good choice as I could use the rear to store additional fuel in Jerry cans and I wouldn't have to lower myself to a diesel....
You may think I’m incredibly bored at work (and you’d be right) but we all need to have a plan people.

you said it 4x4 diesel defender, job done
next thread...
oh and go and live in a racing circuit already has security fencing, plenty of land in the middle to grow food and then you can hoon around the track when you've finished.
Nah not really. 4x4s are unstable when driving around built up areas at speed... You just need to roll it and then you're breakfast. next thread...

how about one of these, still want a bit of prestige! although a NI Police Landy would be pretty awesome.
6.0 V12 twinturbo tdi! Great performance with diesel economy! (ish)
http://www.testdriven.co.uk/60-litre-twin-turbo-v1...
although it doens't look like it's out yet - still may be out in time for the apocolypse.
ETA:
Power bhp : 500
Torque lb-ft : 738
0-60 : 5.5 seconds
pretty amazing! although i think it's going to be about 100k

A BTR-60. Then with a bit of precise british aiming you can gun down the hordes at the petrol station, and you don't need to worry about paying because, well, having just gunned down a bunch of people making off without paying seems a little insignificant. Plus you're in a BTR...

23 mpg of diesel though? Isn't that about the same as ~16/17mpg petrol? Horrendous economy, horrendous looks, torque aside performance isn't that good and will undoubtedly cost a fortune to purchase... It sounds like the sort of car that I would only want at the end of the world..

Nah, low profile tyres no good for the crumbling roads, plus it'll be as thirsty as hell. And you are buggered when the service light comes on or goes into limp home mode.6.0 V12 twinturbo tdi! Great performance with diesel economy! (ish)

Another vote here for Defender.

I would try to find one with the marine 7.2 litre V12 option, and/or machine gun mounting. They come with a 76 gallon fuel tank, so that should last at least 200 miles.
The blurb says "The 21st-century GILA military vehicle family has high mobility with excellent 4x4 performance, whilst offering high mine and ballistic-protection levels."
Ought to do the trick.
