I really fancy getting an estate car for various personal reasons. I will be looking to spend about £12k but cant decide on what to get, It needs to be quick, not to brutal on fuel and still fun to drive.

I really like the S4 but dont really want another car that does 20mpg like my old Impreza did. I was for ever at the petrol station

Any suggestions??

Would suggest a V70R (2003 onwards) but you won't get much more than 25mpg from it....love mine though biggrin

E60 545i Touring, or cheaper still an E39 540i Touring.

Mine! Alpina B10 V8 Touring. Often catches other more obviously sporting chariots on the back foot.

Not so easily procured mind smile

A B5 S4 will do 30mpg on a motorway run. My old one used to do 25.5mpg on a 50/50 combined London/motorway commute. Fantastic cars and you will be able to put a few grand from your budget to one side just in case the turbos let go.

ETA, the Alpina idea is great too smile

If you have one eye on mpg costs, a 'chipped' 330d will be brisk

I loved my e36 328i Touring, though it only just ticks the estate box, not that big.
30mpg when needed,
rwd, manual, fun!

Next time I'm looking for this type of thing I'll be looking at a 330 or 335!

I always fancied a Legnum VR4, I don't know how bad they are on fuel though.

or you could just spend £1500 quid and get a top spec 406 estate with the v6 engine, will surprise a lot of stuff and has enough left over to get a weekend toy

Depends on how much you use those twin turbos.........

They can haemorrhage fuel though.

+£500 on Koni FSD shocks and bosh!

Although there's nothing wrong with the standard fit.

Apparently these Rs are quicker 30-70 than a Ferrari 355. Not a bad pub bragging fact.

What sort of driving do you do?

If you can't live with 20mpg average then don't bother with anything V8 flavoured. Al this talk of 30mpg is only true if you live on the motorway.

The main reason I sold my E39 540 Touring was due to 18mpg average. They are fabulous cars mind.

You're not forgetting the gaggle of hooning RS2s you've witnessed at close quarters are you, Jim?

Not much gets away from them or they can be persuaded to return 30mpg.

At a steady 55-ish

Get the V8, you only live once. And with the way the eco goons are making progress V8's will be illegal soon anyway.

12k is probably a slightly leggy v8 estate s4 which is no real issue in terms of reliability etc.

I would suggest do what i was going to do which is buy an s4 and then have it lpg converted which will mean in real world costs you will be getting around 30+mpg average and its probably better for the engine anyway as audis engines have a habit of getting coked up?? i believe which doesnt do them any real harm i dont think but nonetheless....

Quote I recently heard from a VR4 owner: "17mpg is easier to achieve than 22" wink

My 280bhp Legacy averages around 26-27mpg and 30-33 is easy to do while making good progress on a run, and offers the same level of performance as a manual VR4 - same power, slightly less torque but 100kg less weight as well.

ETA: Sleepy looking enough for you?

That sounds good. How come the Legacy will do more MPG than the Impreza. I thought they were pretty much an STI engine in a bigger body. I always thought the Impreza was rubbish on fuel.

True! But still, amazed to see a knat's todger under 34 on a trip from Somerset to Derbyshire.

Just think, that's 68mpg avg for each bank/2.2 litres smile
