Estate Sleepers
Discussion
I really fancy getting an estate car for various personal reasons. I will be looking to spend about £12k but cant decide on what to get, It needs to be quick, not to brutal on fuel and still fun to drive.
I really like the S4 but dont really want another car that does 20mpg like my old Impreza did. I was for ever at the petrol station
Any suggestions??

A B5 S4 will do 30mpg on a motorway run. My old one used to do 25.5mpg on a 50/50 combined London/motorway commute. Fantastic cars and you will be able to put a few grand from your budget to one side just in case the turbos let go.
ETA, the Alpina idea is great too

I always fancied a Legnum VR4, I don't know how bad they are on fuel though.
Depends on how much you use those twin turbos.........http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

They can haemorrhage fuel though.
+£500 on Koni FSD shocks and bosh!
Although there's nothing wrong with the standard fit.
Apparently these Rs are quicker 30-70 than a Ferrari 355. Not a bad pub bragging fact.

12k is probably a slightly leggy v8 estate s4 which is no real issue in terms of reliability etc.
I would suggest do what i was going to do which is buy an s4 and then have it lpg converted which will mean in real world costs you will be getting around 30+mpg average and its probably better for the engine anyway as audis engines have a habit of getting coked up?? i believe which doesnt do them any real harm i dont think but nonetheless....

Quote I recently heard from a VR4 owner: "17mpg is easier to achieve than 22"
My 280bhp Legacy averages around 26-27mpg and 30-33 is easy to do while making good progress on a run, and offers the same level of performance as a manual VR4 - same power, slightly less torque but 100kg less weight as well.
ETA: Sleepy looking enough for you?

What sort of driving do you do?
...
The main reason I sold my E39 540 Touring was due to 18mpg average.
What sort of driving did you do to get 18mpg?...

Local running about in mine gets around 24.

Al this talk of 30mpg is only true if you live on the motorway.
True! But still, amazed to see a knat's todger under 34 on a trip from Somerset to Derbyshire.Just think, that's 68mpg avg for each bank/2.2 litres
