RS200 what a stunning car one of my favourites, I remember Dee's of Croydon ahd one in their show room for years at £50,000, if only i took the plunge and sold the wife and kids would have been the best pension fund ever.

This was one of the very few RS's I never got to drive. I was the RS Owner's Club magazine editor for a few years and got to drive some nice stuff:

Group A Escort Cosworth rally car
440 BHP RS500
Genuine RS1800 road car
Cosworth engined RS2000s etc etc

I had a day at Boreham to drive the prototype RWD RS2000 (Mk5 Escort shape). There was an RS200 on site, we had Malcolm Wilson along to drive it and reminisce for the article. At least three buggers got a go of the 200 - but when it was my turn, the owner decided to take it home. Boo Hoo.

This was the "rally car" event on the Saturday, on the Sunday they had a more conventional rallycross round the same circuit.

Good video of the X-Games 17 "Rally Car" and "Rallycross" finals here:

(Skip to 4:10 to see the rallycross final).

The RS200 Police car was never used for actual police work, it was just a promotional photo shoot for Ford. I remember reading about it on another car forum.

Edit: The RS200 was sold to Mr Dean Price in 1986, & is now owned by his son. The car was involved in an accident in 1990, & as yet, still not back on the road. There are many tales of the police crashing them, or breaking them, but none of those stories are true. Do i get bonus points for telling you that the blue Cosworth number plate is D726 PVW!?

There seem to be other stories, likely apocryphal, about police and Lotus Carltons too, the most common being that two traffic coppers took a demo LC out and crashed it, killing one of them and the police didn't buy any because of that incident. Never found any source to back that up though!

Funnily enough, I have a book about Cosworths which has a photograph of a police liveried Sierra Cosworth parked at the roadside, registration ending was something like 'OHK 999' or something to that effect. A friend of mine who is an ex-traffic copper remembers driving that car when it came to his force as a demo car, and he was supremely impressed with it. Though like most officers, he preferred the Sierra Cosworth to the Escort Cosworth.

Yes, we will be there in the Mach 2 Racing RS200. See entries on www.ppihc.com. We are in the Unlimited Division. Mark Rennison is driving. If Liam wants to be there he better enter quickly as they are closing entries on 31.1.12 due to an unexpectedly high number of entries, and I don't see his name in the list.
If you want to see testing be prepared to get up early.... around 2.30am!
We'll also be there on June 8/9th for some testing on the hill.
Tajima remains the man to beat. He's got a great car that's tried and tested. But we'll have a go.
Here's a picture of the car at Pikes Peak in 2009.

Out of interest why do rate Tajima as the man to beat? I'd have thought Millen's car (reliability aside) has a better chance this year???

6 wins in a row and 11 overall in a thoroughly developed car. I admit Millen's car is great as is the Duster. It's going to be an exciting race.

Agreed, it will be interesting to see how the teams adapt the cars for a single surface stage - shame though as the engineering compromises dictated by the two surfaces were what made it so interesting.

Good luck by the way.

It's too cool to see these suckers out on the road again.... He better get over here and rent a ride to drive that road over and over and over again so that every corner is etched into his brain.....

Why only 925hp ? That's not gonna cut it at altitude, he's gonna need 1,200+ at the start just to be in the top 5.

Ya gotta do much better and practice like a man possessed.....

Here is my old 900hp RS200E 106 but that was back in 1992 with a 2.1 ltr. I had from 89-96

He's gonna need a little more downforce development and remember this is no 2 min. hillclimb.. Good Luck, I can't wait to see it on the hill.

Here is an RS from a few years ago

The car above is the same one as I posted previously but in different livery. Stig Bolmqvist drove it in 2002 (4th overall)and 2004.
To my knowledge no RS200E engine was making 900 bhp in 1989. If it was I wish I'd have met you sooner!! Firstly the original engine internals won't take the power. Almost very single component in our engine is bespoke. At this power the 420R con rods bend like liquorice and the cranks break. There are a host of other difficulties in getting beyond 900bhp. You need to bore out to 2.4l and use VP C16 fuel to get anywhere close. I believe ours is the most powerful ever devloped but I may be wrong. Geoff Page and I have been working on this engine for many years to get it where it is.
As for needing 1200bhp on the line that's not necessary as it's a turbo car. All you need is the right turbo...... and that ain't straightforward! Atmosphere breathers lose 40% compared to sea level at the top. The hill starts at 9000ft or 750 mbars and ends at 14,100 ft or 600mbars.
I enclose a picture of our engine. As you can see it's heavily modified and has port throttle for added response.

See you on the hill.

Happy Trails

East Coast Racing did my Engine way back and repaced all internals, head, 6.5/1 pistons and so on... The original cast head were known to crack and it did....The cars were sold and not expected to be driven so no one was told...
I ran different turbo and larger intercooler, take a look at the black spacer on the roof pod too allow for the larger core..... 42 psi on C16
I remenber having a fun time finding a replacement power steerting pump when mine failed and no one knew that it was a Audi quattro pump with it's numbers ground off.... wink

Someone had to be first... http://rs200.com/106.htm I last heard the car is now in Canada, maybe it's comin home....

I put alot of canyon miles on that sucker and a few track days.. It started out white then red and ended Toyota yellow....

I can't wait to see the RS on the hill.... Now I have to tell my buddy Mitch Pederson the tuner of Millen's car....whistle

On the dyno...

Hi Mr Ronin
When was this? Way back in 89? Looks great. I'm duly impressed. These days we can run 9.5:1 CR even at 3 bar boost instead of the old 6.5:1. Response is far better.
Never had an issue with the heads.
You need a larger intercooler for Pikes Peak or it overheats.
The big issue at PP is drive out of the bends. We now have full ALS and EGR mapped into a life ECU running 0.5 bar off throttle. Plus nitrous if we need it. The car is going into the Atmospheric Chamber at Ford Dunton in a few weeks for final mapping at altitude. Looking forward to the race.
Tell your buddy Mitch I'll see him on the hill and we can talk power!!!!!

Thought you might like to see the graph for my current road car prepared by Rob Young at DMS. It makes over 900bhp but gets heat soak on the dyno so soon it never shows it. The blue run starts earlier in the rev range so soaks earlier.
Still 870 and 780 lbs torque not bad. It does 0-150 mph in 10 secs. If the RS doesn't make it I might just take the Porker!

stay happy

That looks cool I found that the heat off the front rad went directly into the cooler and temps went up at 8,000 ft alt and the dam fuel pumps needed better air flow that's why I installed the side naca ducts....

Alot has changed since 89 and the RS is the one car I wish I never let go since it was the only EVO street legal in the US..
