RE: Driven: Toyota GT 86
Discussion
I think this is going to be a great car. I have an MX5 because I want a fun car to use everyday that costs as much as a boggo corsa to run. It's roughly this kind of idea that the gt 86 is partly aimed at. Easy, accessible, fun, affordable (if not in initial purchase price), practical and simple all-round driving.

yep, ideally i would like to run 2 cars, i used to but its too much hassle for me now
For me this car would be the compromise, its focused enough yet has all of the needed creature comforts, As already mentioned like the DC2. I am not trying to preach this car to you but you know it makes sense lol For those saying the GT86 doesn't look good enough, the wheels look crap, or isn't focussed enough, there's the BRZ STI....

Concept at the moment, but Subaru being Subaru are bound to do a tweaked version of the BRZ in good time.
That's the one I'm having. Reckon that ticks enough boxes to downsize from 2 cars to just the one, assuming the rear seats can fit a dog.

But this car is compromised in the performance stakes and for me the acceleration just wouldn't be exciting enough. Although I'm sure the driving mechanics are good and the price seems more reasonable than previously reported.superman84 said:

Someone mentioned before to my comment about the 0-60 sprint that it may well be in the 6's which is fair enough. What WILL be interesting though is to see how many folk put their money where their mouth is and downstep from a 300bhp machine to this. With those figures announced I think it's a logical step up for an mx5 owner but not for a potential used cayman customer or 370 customer
Don't flame me, I like it though

Sounds fantastic
Problem I would have is the real world performance, your going to spend most of your life with mid sized German oil burners, modern hot hatches and "barry" cars (chipped fiests ST's and Corsa VXR's)glued to your back bumper
The local barrys are the main reason I have sold my R32 DSG, low 6's 0-60s just do not cut it any more
What do you drive currently then?Problem I would have is the real world performance, your going to spend most of your life with mid sized German oil burners, modern hot hatches and "barry" cars (chipped fiests ST's and Corsa VXR's)glued to your back bumper

Have to say its a bit of an odd take. All the cars you list are a minority and most don't race on the roads.

pleased to hear it drives so well
but cant get over the looks. its nearly 2012 ffs, expected better
I agree, it's a shame the Pros couldn't make something that looks "right".but cant get over the looks. its nearly 2012 ffs, expected better
It still looks good insofar as it looks like a small personal Coupe, but it doesn't quite look right.
A lot of cars don't look right from every angle though. My RX7 looks too pointy from the side, but great from the front 3/4 and cool from the rear.
In all honesty though, it's not the greatest shape/design is it. They should've got the people who did the Alfa 4C, 8C,and Brera concept, or maybe some help from Nissan. Or Mazda - the mk3 MX5 looks great, or Peugeot - RCZ looks sweet.

Whilst having the fastest car in the world/your local area is a nice feeling to have, it's not essential really is it, and there's always going to be something faster coming along. The mechanically-ignorant businessman up the road will probably have a faster more powerful car than you the enthusiast.Problem I would have is the real world performance, your going to spend most of your life with mid sized German oil burners, modern hot hatches and "barry" cars (chipped fiests ST's and Corsa VXR's)glued to your back bumper

If you want over 300bhp/ton on a budget (<£20k) in a fun daily driver, then you're going to have to build it I reckon. See www.norotors.com

I think what he's saying is that a bit more would be nice as 166bhp per tonne ain't nothing to raise any eye brows about these days.If you want over 300bhp/ton on a budget (<£20k) in a fun daily driver, then you're going to have to build it I reckon. See www.norotors.com

Again though, I think that's missing the point rather. No, it's not going to raise any eyebrows but this car isn't aimed at people whose eyebrows are raised by straight line speed. There's plenty of uber-powerful cars that don't handle especially well at this price if that's your thing. This is a fine handling car that isn't especially powerful. If you want both, you have to spend more money.

I can't think of any of the direct or remote competitors that reportedly don't handle well. Cayman, possibly z4, 370z, rx8, used s2000 all hanfle well and put out more bhp/tonne There's plenty of uber-powerful cars that don't handle especially well at this price if that's your thing.
