I dont mind asking to sit in someones car as I love them so much but if the driver says no I can understand as a mans car is his pride and I've had it in the past where someone has put their feet on my dash etc.

Its always nice when someone says fine but you must accept it if they say no

These days it's not worth the hassle of getting involved with strangers kids.

Who knows what you could be blamed of.

Indeed.

"Hey Kiddo, want to have a grab at the gear knob?".

No thanks.

Not sure I'd be classed as a child, but I'd love to sit in an Aventador...anyone out there ?

I'm offering free rides in my 306 diesel if that would be a good substitute?

Some owners do have weird reactions to fans of their cars. Back in the early 1980's, when I were a lad, I took a photo of someone's Trans Am in the States (back when Knight Rider was on and I thought they were awesome) - the owner prompltly called the police.

no-one gives a fk about a car apart from a petrolhead... i guess something like this could make a kid into a petrolhead so it's worth bearing in mind. However they could just start pulling at stuff and kicking things. Hard to know whether they've been brought up well based on a split second glance. Any longer is paedo of course, we all know that.

I would have happily obliged the kid.

No brainer, if you ask me.
+1

Me too....I would have even taken him for a ride in mine.
Same same. OK its only a S80, but many moons when my son was about 7 we came across a lovely american sportster in a car park, got chatting to the owner, he noticed my sons interest and let him sit behind the wheel..

My son was just over the moon.

Same here, however we don't know if the owner in question was having a bad day. Who knows.

A few weeks ago, there was a local charity car do for North & West Yorkshire Association for Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus, I'd just parked up and there was some small children having a look around some of the cars.

They seemed to be interested in my S2000 so told them that they could have a sit in it if they wanted, they duely obliged and they seemed to really enjoy it biggrin

He might've been on some sort of 'register' and didn't want to take the risk.

Hit the nail on the head with this smile

Its a shame the Lambo owner didnt allow the kid to sit in, but oh well, it happens.

I must say though it really does make someones day if they can sit in a car they love. I remember being allowed to sit in a sports/super car of some sort when I was quite a bit younger (cant remember off the top of my head, sorry) - what I do remember, however, was being so happy afterwards, it really did make my day smile

If I am fortunate enough to be in the position of owning a sports/supercar and have an enthusiast talk to me I will happily let them sit in, purely because I know it'll mean a lot to them smile

Had a little lad come up to me in the Waitrose car park -

"Hey Mister, I'm a big fan of top-end Germaan engineering! Pleeeeeeeeeeeeease can I have a sit in your car?!!!??!"

I was like "Listen kid, do you realise this car is SE spec?"

He said "Wow i know it's special, but I just want to sit in it so I can tell my mates"

I said "Go back to your parents. I don't let any old riffraff sit in the Passat"

He cried and walked away.

You can't really risk it these days. He might have scratched the soft-touch dash or messed with the electric windows.

Not just kids. One day I was waiting for a parking space in my Bentley. Very old chap started to ask me about the car, all the usual questions, "How big is the engine? What mpg?" etc Seemed a knowledgeable chap and obviously knew a little bit about Bentley's. Finally he asked me where the nearest bus stop was. "Where are you going?" I asked and it turned out to only be a few miles away. "Hop in. I'll give you a lift". It took a few attempts to convince him I was genuine but he finally accepted. He was like a kid in a sweet shop. He asked what all the buttons did and loved every second of it. I met his son at a later date and he told me had not stopped talking about the brief car ride and was telling all his old mates about it.

I would have let him, he'd be over the moon and telling all of his mates about it for ages. I remember my main memory one year at Silverstone for the F1 with my dad was that some bloke on the campsite had let me sit in his brand new green Elan, I loved it.

Fair play,
The point is it's the owner's car, he may have anything in there that he doesn't want a kid messing with, it's one thing taking a car to a show as you know people will be looking at it and in it. A run to the shops means you are using it so there is personal stuff in the car. Equally the guy may just have reacted badly to a surprise request.

There are some miserable fkers here.

It's a car, only a car, and it'll take a couple of mins to make a kids day. Something that will stick in his/her memory for ever. The ones that deny, try it, it'll even make you chuffed to bits knowing that you've made someone's day for 2 mins of your time.

It's all been said before but it's the generosity and kindness of car owners that have formed the life long interests of many on this forum. My own experiences: As a 13yr old walking home from school regularly looking into the window of the local classic car garage "If your that interested you better come in and have a look", "Can I sit in the lightweight?" (E Type), "Take your shoes off and you can sit in the lot". A top guy who always had time to chat, over the years took me out in lots of cars I would never have had access too. Met loads of petrolheads over the years who understand the need to encourage young interest.
Regarding the OP, bad day? who knows but unless it's a difficult time I would always oblige if the approach was polite.

Was recently at a hotel in Italy and got hating to an English couple in the restaurant. Turns out they owned the white R8 V10 Spyder parked next to our car.

We said it looked stunning and he chucked us the keys and told us to go and have a look round it whilst they the their dinner. Lovely chap!
