RE: Subaru prepping BRZ Turbo?
Discussion
IMHO they will keep the car close to its philosophy and current execution.
I am not sure the decision here is an engineering one, or a 'wouldn't it be great one' ; it will be a marketing / business one.
And that is where it gets a bit more tricky for me.
Don't get me wrong I'd love more power but I'm kind of mindful of.........
Price; would a £35k plus bonkers BR86 be accepted by the market and sell? Used GTR or hot BR86- it would have to be very special.
Character; would FI spoil the car? More weight, more running costs, less precise handling?
Other products; the wrx sti and variants is still Subaru's halo car. New car inbound so they will be mindful of cannibalising this product
Politics; I suspect there is a coordinated plan with Toyota which might hold back STI aspirations, or it might already be the plan that Subaru do the performance variants, but Toyota focus on hair products , like the convertible No idea
I'd love to see a 280bhp lightened mini GT3 BRZ with no rear seats and a clubsport set up, but I think we'll see a 230bhp non FI STI variant with performance parts.
I"ve an open mind but in the mean time I will carry on working with Iain Litchfield to create my own perfect BRZ.

I prefer the looks of the TRD GT86 - that Turbo'd with all the options would be very nice. All the TRD kit becomes available Jan 2013 the sales man told me, would add rather a lot to the price though - I think he was way off the mark when he told me £5K more for brakes, exhaust, seats, forged wheels & body kit.
Dream on. The TRD brakes kit will be more than that alone. They're currently talking £35k for the full on TRD.
Does look nice but will be very expensive.

A bit more power won't ruin the recipe surely?
I took the BRZ for a B road blast around the Yorkshire dales and loved the concept of blending great handling into a reasonably powered package however the disappointing acceleration limited overtaking manoevers to longer stretches of tarmac lowering its appeal. Yes please to more power/ torque that would result in a a class leader! madmarkb said:

If the GT86 was £5k cheaper then I would agree it's a fun car for the money. The problem with the M135i is that it's on another level to the GT86 and to get that "driving pleasure" you really have to explore territory that day to day you might be uncomfortable with. However that is offset set with effortless overtaking and other manoeuvres that come good with bags of torque and power.
I know this because I have a 35iS and a 1M of the wifes to play with. I can get lots of fun and giggles in my Kangoo van where as with the 1M (well lets just say it's nuts) to get that enjoyment means 99% of the time your doing something illegal to enjoy that on the road.
So the GT86 makes a lot of sense for a lot of people.
What you can't argue with is that this the car is too expensive and way off the performance in that price bracket.
You just know a hotter one is going to come along and that mindset is surely hampering sales for Toyota.

If it's more fun than more expensive cars, how is it "too expensive"? Surely that makes it cheap? I don't see why so many people draw such a strong correlation between straight-line speed and price. It's one of the easiest things to get a car to do, and IMO one of the most pointless on the road.
Personally I feel a sense of shame when I see a blue Impreza with gold wheels and stickers all over it. It's very sad behaviour.
I pray for this car to stay RWD (to scare off anyone who can't drive properly) and they don't go anywhere near gold wheels.
If it goes down the chav route, that will be a shame, and i'm out.
I'd also prefer it was supercharged, but a linear twin scroll unit would also be good.

However IMHO the GT86 is too expensive in the UK market. Most of the motoring world was expecting a much lower price upon release.

Iconic colour and livery in many people's eyes and backed by real motorsport credibility.I pray for this car to stay RWD (to scare off anyone who can't drive properly) and they don't go anywhere near gold wheels.

I think you'd buy the Toyota version

I guess the only test of that will be how well it sells. It seems like the single best value new (driver's) car on the market to me, but then I'm not in the market for a new car so my opinion doesn't count for much. If this comes in at 30k it will be pretty damned good too, IMO, although of no real interest to me.

How about 1.6L turbocharged motor and 4wd. Then give it to Prodrive to put a cage in it.......
How about you stop being a poosay and just turbo the 2.0L motor and leave it RWD as it's been intended.I suppose Prodrive can sort the chassis out though - 4-pot calipers, fixed buckets, lightweight gold wheels (compulsory) and maybe a half cage. We don't want to be carrying too much steel around do we? I don't know about you but I wouldn't be intending to use it...
