Totally Right.
Unlike the rubbish they design these days at least that Zagato looks different
100% NOT another Penis shaped sports car.
Agreed. Good article, I started thinking "what's he smoking" but then by the end appreciated how radical this must have looked, and how the weight saving and 186mph top speed made this car better, rather than just "exclusive". I was almost run over by Rowan in the blue car. The day before I had bought the issue of Car mentioned by Mr Harris &, like him, was totally engrossed. Admittedly, part of my fascination was in trying to work out if I liked the look of the Zagato or if it was a terrible mistake, but whichever, it was certainly a very special creation ...
Imagine my utter astonishment then when the next day i happened to be walking along the, rather narrow and pavementless, road outside his mother's house here in Northumberland and THAT VERY CAR APPEARED COMING STRAIGHT TOWARDS ME!!! I was utterly transfixed and rooted to the spot to the extent that he had to slow down and drive around me as I gawped, speechlessly, at the near mythical creation made real in front of me.
I still struggle to find it "attractive", but undoubtably very, very special.

Has to be one of the worst looking Astons ever... Nothing about that shape makes me want to own one...
Any other badge on the front and this would have the piss taken out of it universally.

Like it a lot.
Is this supposed to be a demonstration that the Zagato is better looking than the standard model because I can't find one angle where it actually looks nicer.Anyway, 80s coupe? Might as well stop messing around and get something that looks nice.

rear lights made from cut up Aston Lagonda rear lamps (remember them with their touch panel switchgear...)
front lights from a renault van and MK1 sierra's
doors and switches from Masarati bi-turbos
column switches and key from a vauxhall
All borrowed parts....
BUT
OMG what a lovely bit of kit can't help but be impressed with them, having built a loom for one recently non of it made sense and I'm amazed it all worked at all from the factory... especially when the factory was going bust when they built them!
I'd have a convertible one though... because that engine needs to be heard!

Used to see a chocolate coloured zagato volante almost every day when they came out! Sure they listed at over £250k, although I may be mistaken.. I love them .
A red volante recently sold at auction for about £70 k I think, bargain in my eyes.
The hard tops in a nice colour really look the business.
Never heard of anyone defending how a period Aston drives apart from ' fast in a straight line'

IMHO one of the last proper astons. When Ford took over a lot of the charisma faded away. There are not a lot of car company's capable of retaining the the brand identity when doing a takeover. Volkswagen ruined Bentley and Lamborghini, Ford killed Aston and nearly jaquar and fiat does well with Ferrari but does very strange things with maserati. The only one who respect brand identity is BMW they gave us some good MINI's Rollers and last a very nice replacement for the old range rover.

I also remember Rowan Atkinson driving a Blue one in some film back in the eighties.Looked stunning then, still does.
I believe it was The Tall Guy.I had the issue that prompted the article and it may even still be in my loft somewhere and my overriding thought at the time and now is how much of a munter it looked next to the Ferraris of the day. I have softened on that a little, but for me there is no getting away from that to my eye the 'face' of the car simply doesn't work. From most other angles I kind of like it, but if I ever saw one in my rear view mirror I would wave it past just not to have the front of it somewhere that I couldn't see it...
One of these, a POW V8 Vantage Volante and a Lagonda for the family/business - a perfect trio....my favourite Astons by far. Surprising how cheap they are given the limited build volumes and the fact they are hand-built by 2 of the most evocative firms in the automotive world. You most certainly are not wrong Christopher....
Rowen not just drove one in that film , he owned one too.
they are super rare and both convertible and coupe look great in the flesh although never going to compete with a ferrari on looks.
in 1989 they were in the back of autotrader with premiums of £300k +++
as you know back then Countach Anniversarys were on at £250k. the world had gone mad for super rare cars, 911 speedster also got part of the craze and dont forget if you had a mercedes 500sl delivered prior to the 3 yr waiting list in 1990 then you made £30k premium profit on flogging it on too!
the 80s is where every top end car maker tried to produce something properly special. Shame now days the best that is produced is just a rehashed or retrimmed version of the mass produced version.

I think works offered a 6.3 or 7.0 conversion too...

oh i must digitally convert some of my photos from the era. In particular i remember the London or Birmingham motorshow sitting in the cream white Zagato volante that was on show, with red leather. to this day i remember the little plaque saying what number out of 40 it was designated. Amazing car and definitely a piece of history. its under priced for sure.
Ive got pics of bout 5 others of the years, must dig out, although a couple are already on streetsupercars website.
