This sadly happens to all sporting divisions, BMW M, Honda Type-R, AMG. The enthusiast engineers within the company build a true sporting derivative, it's successful, builds a reputation. And then the marketing men take over...
Disagree with AMG, if anything they have gotten more focused
AMG is just getting better and better. M-division is being pissed on these days...

The car would be much faster around the ring if the driver controlled the digital inputs remotely from their lounge via the Internet.

It does seem slightly pointless to situate the driver in the worst place from a performance point of view - in the car.

of course the Nissan is faster than the GT3. 4 wheel drive and turbos, it'd have to be quicker. so what? staying in the 911 family, the 911 turbo s trounces the GT3 on lap times and performance also, but it also leaves me equally cold. no-one needs to go that fast to have fun. unless your thing is impressing people. I'm a 911 fan, apart from the turbos which do nothing for me, despite being the fastest of the 911s. if fun is all about efficiency and lap times, then god help us all - next we'll have Americans reminding us that a car is better when it pulls x amount of gs in a circle ... whereas to me, the more grip, the less fun. following the faster for less involvement logic, you might as well stop skiing and just take the cable car back down the mountain, much quicker and simpler than messing about with those silly outdated bits of carbon fibre strapped to your feet ...

It will be interesting to see how the sales figures look in comparison to previous iterations of the GT3. Not just how many new ones are sold but how quickly they are kept and moved on. Let's face it there are always those that must have the latest gadget ('Poseurs not racers' - perhaps). Then there are those that want to give it a go. I should imagine that a lot of 'real' drivers are not those that can afford a new GT3/RS anyway which is sad as the consensus seems to be in favour of a manual/stick. The money men will on the whole I am sure love the PDK.

I am not a fan of paddle shift but bought a CSL because it was a special car in other ways. I have a 996 GT3 because I could not afford a GT3 RS and simply love the manual box over BMW's SMG. Face it, it is not as involving and that is all part of the enjoyment. I am perfectly capable of turning my windscreen wipers on and off and my headlights. Gizmos do not make my life easier as it is no effort to make my own decisions whether that be shifting gear or turning my lights on.

It will also be interesting to see how second hand prices of the 997.2 GT3/RS are affected as compared to its appearance when it replaced the 996 versions.

Does it - the turbo s beats the GT3 on track?
Anyone have some numbers on that - for the NS, or elsewhere?

Think its pretty even actually... but the 997 turbo S is quite fast

In fairness Porsche have been racing with PDK since the late sixties(?), so not sure it can be classed as the latest gadget.

I'm not and probably never will be in the market for a 911GT, but speaking of manual v paddleshifts - I'm completely in two minds, but a couple of foremost thoughts: I'm struggling to see why one would buy a very fast car and then specify a component such as a manual box that is slower at every level; even with my ageing Boxster, 3rd gear is good for 30mph to 105mph, which has a UK B road pretty much covered. In a modern quick car, how much gear changing actually takes place anyway?

And on analogue v digital: Yes, older 'analogue' car had throttle cables and manual shifts, non-pas steering etc. Even older cars had cable brakes, so why do we not want them? Plus, the cable throttles and all other manual components would be specifically designed to assist - leverages, ratios, perfectly machined sliding shafts to provide the best gearchange possible... is 'digitalsing' a car really such a big thing?

....And no one else seems to be bothered by 4WS? You won't be able to turn this off, there for you will have computer interference every time you go past the limit...surely this is more of a crime against the purist than the pdk?

Possibly the biggest load of wky crap I've ever read on PH.
And I don't even like 911s.

Getting thoroughly sick of the whole "anyone who doesn't prefer a manual isn't a real driver" bullst.

Grow up.
It's faster. If you don't like it, there's plenty of "old school" cars you can buy. .

Yes. Silly me. I thought the first paragraph of the article said that the GT3 has its roots in racing.
ie. being fast.

Perhaps it's actually about being able to tell your mates how excellent your "heel and toeing" was, despite you coming last.

This GT3 has pretty much zero connection with any form of racing. If it was just about being fast it would have 4WD and a pair of turbos.

So your issue is with the article, not me. The article suggested that the GT3 was supposed to be about racing.
If it is about racing then the non manual option makes perfect sense - it's faster.
If it's not about racing, but about wky "I'm a better driver than you" stuff, then maybe Porsche have made a mistake.

But what an extraordinarily arrogant thing to say; that unless you drive a car with a manual box you are "not enjoying" the drive.
Newsflash: I enjoy every drive in my "non-manual" car, as do many tens of thousands of drivers every day.
I know several guys who have owned and driven almost all of the current high end sports cars of the last few years, and some of them prefer the manual and some prefer the paddle shift.

Neither if which makes them a "better" driver or means they "enjoyed" it more.

Thanks for the patronising answer, but I'm pretty sure the first paragraph of the story we're all talking about says

"'Roots in racing. Not posing.' boasted Porsche not so long ago. After a couple of days to digest it I'm not so sure this applies to the new GT3 in the way it has the previous ones."

And that's the issue I have: it's crap, because if were talking about racing, then a non-manual box is clearly better.
I'd bet that if the new car was offered with a manual box that sentence would never have been written. If Porsche offered the exact same car with a manual box it would probably be "the best car in the world". There is a rather pathetic, hairy-chested thread of opinion going on these days with the heroes who claim anything but a manual box is for "non-drivers".
If you prefer a manual box - fine, good for you. There are plenty of cars for you.
But the implication of the opening paragraph of this story, along with many of the quotes here, is that anyone who doesn't prefer a manual box is somehow a lesser driver.
That is utter bks.
