HonestJohn mentions the Alfaowner online forum. I think you could learn about what to look for with regard to 166s there.
I think this camchain engine in the 164 is a much more robust engine and easier to maintain.
It almost has me wanting to follow S10GTA's shiply purchase of that rancid 405Mi16 from Scotland and get this delivered.
I have the Mi16 alloys off that car in my garage. £100 and they're yours!I think this camchain engine in the 164 is a much more robust engine and easier to maintain.

Also, I love this SOTW! 100 man-points to whoever buys it!
a great SOTW.
reminds me of my black 164 lusso twin spark .. I bought it for about £2600 at 7 years old and 60k miles as an interim car to last me a few months before I got something 'better'.
..but I liked it so much I kept it for 7 years up to nearly 150k miles .. eventually scrapped it
one of the best cars I have owned, only 'non routine' maintenance was rear calipers and a clutch cylinder.. I would love to have another in a hearbeat if I could find one ...

It's 4 years since a 164 was previously shed:

I had a limited edition 2ltr twinspark in green with those 5 spoke Ferrari like alloys and colour coded body mouldings purchsed for the value of the road tax with a short mot , cost a second hand caliper to get it through the next test, then ran it for the next year with the dashlights flashing like a disco every time I hit a pothole!
Had to do a high speed dash from Brands Hatch to the QEQM hospital when mum had a heart attack it made some very illegal speeds that day.
Sold it on fleabay after a year for four times the purchase price and the new owner thought he got a bargain.

I had a 164 when at uni, a Super 3 litre 24V manual.
Amazing car, cost me £1000 from ebay. It absolutely flew. When it was released in the early 90s it was a genuinely quick car (0 - 100mph in 19 seconds). Very comfy indeed and it sounded great with the busso v6.
There are less than 200 on the roads now according to "how many left". That is of all 164 models!!!

So I've come to SOTW later in the day than usual, so confess that I haven't read anything that precedes this. Suffice it to say that I think these things, though flawed, are absolutely bloody lovely (and oft (rightly) described as one of the best looking saloons ever...)
Here follow some gratuitous photos of my old '91 TS and current '96 QV...

Beautiful QV 164Cloverleaf!
My first car was a 164 Super 24V and still love it! It inspired my dad to get a 164 QV 24V which he still has, and is goings strong with 260.000 km on the clock and THE best exhaust/engine sound (I rate it higher than my E39 and E60 M5!), slightly enhanced by a Remus exhaust.
That it is now SOTW material is slightly depressing but good to see it featured on PH and to general positive praise!

Brilliant shed. Could be real fun for the cost of a couple of fill ups.
It is refreshing to see the genuine affection for these lovely cars. A welcome, for me, change from the usual negativity for old Alfas.
My beauty, a '94 3.0 Super, has recently completed two trips to Belgium. One to the Spa Classic in late May. The conditions then, were miserable, cold, raining and lengthy traffic jams.
Two weeks later, went back and visited Brugges and Antwerp for a few days, In those three weeks or so it covered well over 2000 miles. It never missed a beat, used not a drop of oil and returned up to 36mpg.
Cheap and wonderful motoring.

Just got back from work in Birmingham and took a quick detour to see it - garage owner told me it had sold this morning
Yes, its a bit shabby and there's a couple of electrical glitches (ventilation fan, n/s front window) but its mechanically solid.
I reckon with a bit of tlc and tinkering, there's a £500 profit to be had, or a year or so of seriously cheap motoring, as long as the journey isn't too long
And yes, those are stick-on, battery-powered LED lamps on the bonnet and wing mirrors......
