My 300hp Audi A6 3.0tdi storyline avant with 7speed paddle shift has a volume control on the twin exhausts. On the computer you select car then systems then settings then exhaust note and when turned up if you change about 3 to 4 thousand revs it howls like an F1 car. Pees off the boy racers with their big exhausts also nippy, the book says 0to 60 in 5.0 and 163 mph topend. On and its an Audi so zero emissions: D

The Maserati ghibli is very good sounding for a diesel. I went to look at one and the salesman started it in the showroom. I was very surprised at the noise it made for a diesel! Then he started up a petrol one and unsurprising it did sound better.
I think the Maserati ghibli looks really nice and I would love one and pleased to hear that the diesel model sounds ok, I must admit it would be a big leap of faith buying a diesel Maser when they are so renowned for their lovely sounding petrols though. swerni said:

WTF? Driven one? No, didnt think so.
I didn't expect you to understand. You don't have the intellect. The point stands. Let's see if you can use Google to come up with an educated answer....They make cracking donkey engines...
There's nothing wrong with his 1 series, leave the poor boy alone

My wife has a twin turbo V8 Diesel in the Cayenne. Sounds great - nice woofle esp. when it starts.. 850nm (more than a P1) and 385bhp. Goes ok too...

I was going to suggest the Cayenne Diesel S, but Edo beat me to it. I have one, and the V8 burble is pure bliss to listen too. So many comments from people who hear it and describe it on part or full chat as sounding like a power boat !https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5gq_-ErTQA
The powerboat analogy is good!

Can diesels sound good? With enough cylinders and under load yes (in a heavy plant equipment kind of way).
Can diesels sound better than petrols? Yes if you compare a decent V8 turbo diesel or a tank engine to a naff little 4-pot petrol.
Can a diesel ever sound as good as a petrol with equivalent cylinders, displacement and power? No.
Does it matter? That's a rather individual judgement.
Obviously sound quality is subjective but the above is my opinion. I liked the way my 4.2 tdi I6 Landcruisers sounded under load, they sound like lorries which I quite like. That sound would be totally out of place in some shiny executive car but suits a knobbly old 4x4 perfectly.

My 3 ltr Land Cruiser with 3 1/2 inch side exit stainless custom exhaust, sounds fantastic under load, full turbo whine and a measured, but glorious growl when pulling off, with the window down, it could cost me a small fortune in growly turbo whistly accelerations, off traffic lights, up hills, etc.. I love it..
Well at Le Mans last year the Diesel Audi R18 sounded Rubbish.
The Petrol V8 Toyota TS040 sounded miles better.
And then there was the Corvette C7R ..... Phwoar
Not the Most technical point from me , but from personal experience its Petrol everytime!

fk off baldy.
Ah...
You're getting confused Winnie. Edo's the bald small bloke with the inferiority complex who doesn't understand that a diesel's torque at the crank is of no consequence and its torque at the wheels that counts....Ah...
Well the new Volvo D4 AWD Cross County (with Polestar tune and probably Volvos last use of the 5 cylinder twin turbo diesel) I have on order has a much better sound out of it than my Mini Countryman Cooper S petrol.

We have an Audi TT diesel with the fake engine sound speaker thing. From inside the car it sounds nice when you're pushing it - not diesely at all. I usually drive from inside the car, so that suits me fine!
I wish they'd let us play about with the settings though - we already know it's fake so just let us turn the volume RIGHT up and make it a V8

I prefer petrols but some diesels can sound quite good.
This is a wee bit like those PHers who insist the only way to have fun is in a very lightweight sports car. Sorry, but if you can't hire a Transit and have a giggle driving it, you're just limited. I wouldn't want to be stuck on a desert island with someone with an almost autistic approach to what's pleasant and unpleasant like some PHers are.
Some diesels can sound good. That doesn't make me not prefer petrol. Similarly, I can acknowledge that some of my male friends are more handsome than others, but that doesn't change my preference for women. I'm not so insecure that I can't admit some diesels sound good. Insecurities seem prevailent in PHer car-bore types though.
Deltics are cool engines. Sometimes more is more, and where diesel sounds are concerned that is definitely the case. Big trains and big V-block power boat engines are about the best going. No, they don't sound like racing cars. There is more than one way to sound good though (see above for my thoughts on extreme narrow-mindedness), and whereas race cars can sound quite frantic, big diesels sound best when signifying pure, steady and sustained grunt.
I still prefer buying petrol cars.
