You can have these, Cayennes, Macans and new Sportscars or some nice memories from the 50s through to the 90s, without them selling these, the tiny number of 911s and stuff they sold werent enough to keep them going.
I disagree, Pork own over half of the VAG - I'd wager they could make 911s all day long and still turn a profit due to the VAG involvement.

They wouldn't make as much money, which is the key factor. If people are daft enough to buy something, companies will be daft enough to make it.

Personally I'd rather a company like Porsche don't forget their heritage and stick to their core principles, rather than cash in on the masses whilst building elitist 'collectors' cars like the 911R

I don't have any issue with Porsche evolving and applying their ethos to other types of car, what I do think is sad is that they now build non performance cars that really don't fit and the side effect of the 'collectors' cars that you mention that are the attempt to counter that.

Or against the price tag...

Anyway I like the names Touring/Avant/Wagon/Shooting brake/Aerodeck after all in true PH tradition, "Estate" is a bit council...

Volvo make 'Estates' and I don't think they can be considered 'council'.

As for the Porsche, even if I had the money, I still think I want a 'proper' estate (you know, the sort where you can actually fit big stuff in the back).

From an estate driving PHer, who most PHers would probably consider 'a bit 'council' *

  • Or 'Working Class' as it used to be known biggrin

Indeed, that bit of the my post was really just a play on words and a reference to the eponymous thread in the lounge, I wasn't being serious! smile

Shooting Brake: Appeals to toffs and would-be toffs, so they can charge more for it. Country pile not necessary.

The Lynx Eventer is surely the prettiest of the genre.

So is a Bentley Bentayga actually a shooting brake, rather than an SUV?

Is shooting brake a term which is understood globally?

A Panamera with space for a pair of gun dogs....

Wonder if they'll option a rear-facing child seat?

Could be fun to travel backwards at 300kph......

I prefer the more odd looking saloon hatch thing. At least this still has the long long bonnet - keeps a bit of the weirdness.

People are so obsessed with band proportions which neither inspire nor offend (but you can paint it black and put some big wheels on it - if you're a moron) that we just end up with forgettable st heaps like this.

Just buy an S-Class and grow up.

You will struggle to put a couple of dogs in an s class and if you want a fast modern estate (that isnt on stilts !!) there really arent that many choices apart from Audi's

Cant believe people get excited over a car like this. If you want an ugly practical car just buy a £2k used estate. Otherwise save your £££ on something special.

Its looks like a cheap car to everyone that does not know anything about cars.

You couldn't believe up until now or you still can't believe?
The evidence of people getting excited is above, just fyi.
I'm yet to believe anyone with £80k to spend on an fast, luxurious estate car will spend only £2k on one and then buy something additional..... I'm not sure how people "save their £££ on something special"?

It's a sub 4 second, near 200 mph estate when in full Porsche guise. Makes it a pretty impressive stormer of a family wagon. The Rapide could probably benefit from being turned into an estate as well. I certainly think changing the rear has made it far more appealing and something that should have been done at the outset.

Looks even uglier to me - while it has never been a pretty car and its certainly massive it, at least had a little bit of proportion.

That massive rear takes grace it had away completely.

To be honest most people who are into cars and can spend 80k on an estate certainly have additional cars anyway, this will just be the daily hack / dog car :-)

Never got on with the looks of the first version, but like the new coupe. It's always been a great car inside.

Put in an LOI on one of these (wagons) a couple of weeks ago, and it will replace an RS6 wagon this time next year, launch at Geneva. It's a motorway (or more accurately an Autobhan) private train, and it does that job very well.

Just saw the photos and the first thing I thought was 'at last'. I remember thinking the Sport Turismo Concept is how the Panamera should have looked from the start.

Yes, I always understood "estate" as a practical car for picking people + luggage up from the station.

So, 'station wagon' then

Ah, well, that's what the Americans termed an estate car as they didn't own estates in the way that Europeans did. So in logical terms, in the U.K. We'd call this car an estate but in America a station wagon. It's a fender/bumper scenario.
