I keep waiting for the Rancho to appear as SOTW ( or be mentioned at all on any car site.. )
Only 7 left according to the Rancho owners club guy I chatted to the other year at the Bromley Pageant apparently.
7 left out of 57,000 sold in UK. They really did turn to dust then !
Bit of a worry: the bodies were fibreglass, weren't they?
No, really? I wanted a Rancho one day too. If that's true it's a shame.

If one is for sale, it will never make SOTW as I will have bought it already biggrin

Im sure that I almost remember the advert! But I remember talking to an old school pal many years ago who said he had bought one, I wasnt exactly impressed. Some cars don't need to be preserved!

Ahh a Foogo. Much better than last weeks SHOTW.

Gallic (lack of) build quality, but quirky. I had a play with one and was quite impressed by it (compared to my brother's Regie 18 GTS) at the time. It had a good set of gear ratios and brakes that would squidge your snotter against the screen with a slight jab.

Never tried the Turbo though - though did get to play with a 21 Quadra which was very impressive for what it was.

If anything I did prefer it's predecessor - the 17 Gordini - it was whacky, but for it's era, it was pretty quick.

I nearly bought a mint R16 TS in 1992 with next to no miles, 12 months tax and test on it for £150, but decided to go out for a lots of beer and a curry instead that weekend. I talked myself into buying it that evening, then got to the dealer that had it hiding in his "trade-in bin", to find that some git had beaten me to it. I'd even found some dodgy Frenchy accordian music tapes to play on it' Philips Turn-o-clock stereo. It was going to be our "on-tour" hack.

Oooh, good shed!

My dad used to have a Renault 18 Turbo. Left hand drive, went like the proverbial off a stick. Well, it probably felt that way to eight year old me when the only car I'd really ridden in up to that point was a 1.3l Mk2 Escort. He had a Haynes manual for it which also covered the Fuego. I remember wishing my dad had bought the Fuego turbo instead because it looked so much better.

My dad's 18 was maroon with a huge cutout TURBO decal in grey stripes on both sides of the car. And the wheels were cool. Same as on that fuego there. Of course to an eight year old that made it the coolest car in existence.
Snap, except my dad's 18T was white and RHD. Up to that point it had been a Hillman Minx, a Maxi, Cortinas mks 3 and 5; all as dull as dishwater. And one day my dad picked me up from school, drove me down to the dealer and pointed at the first and only performance car he'd ever own. I was impossibly excited, it even had orangey maroon velour upholstery that looked straight off the set of Space 1999. After 18 months of chronic unreliability he chopped it in on a Volvo 360 - I cried... frown

OK, the Fuego was better looking but that didn't matter to a boy used to Dagenham's finest.

Go on PH, find an 18 Turbo!

Yep I went through a phase where women in jodphurs really did it for me as well. sadlly though I never had any feelings for the fuego. Our neighbours bought one about 2 years old from memory and at the time it looked modern and sporty. They had it for about 3 years. On the surface it still looked good but I remember the scrap man literally having to trailer it away at about 5-6 years old because the thing virtually rotted out from the underside.

I don't know how bad this car was for tin work but I haven't seen one for many many years so I am guessing they were pretty bad as were all renaults of the time.

its funny how times have changed. back in the dark days of the 70's cars lasted about 10 years if you were lucky, cover sills were an MOT fit job. Now you rarely see a rusty car in a scrap yard.

The rear shell of the Rancho was fibreglass, the rest sadly not! My parents bought one when I was about 10. Thought it was ultra-cool at the time. There only needed to be a forecast of rain for panels to start rusting though. I remember the little spot lights on the front wings had all rusted. Dad looked at replacing them and the dealer wanted almost as much for new ones as he'd paid for the car! Woeful gearbox I recall Dad moaning about.
They were pretty dire cars really, albeit quirky. Can't believe there's only 7 left! Explains why I've not seen one in years.

It's unfair to pick on certain manufacturers rust protection in the 70s, they were ALL crap. My dad had a 1974 VW which had holes in the doors so big you could get in without opening them (started as paint chips IIRC), and was dead after 10 years, although really should have been put down long before. All this "Vorsprung durch technik" st and rolling out of pristine MK1 Golfs/Sciroccos at new model launches is just clever advertising that plays on peoples goldfish like memories and allows numpties to take the piss out of cars like the above.

Great Shed! I remember as a child, feeling proud as punch of my Dad's Cortina 2000E. It gave me status, as it was the best Dad's car, within my group of friends. Then the day arrived, where Steven Freeman came running at full pelt, down the road, shouting about his Dad's brand new car. It was a Renault Fuego. I was gutted. smashbiglaugh

Ummmm dodgy windows, leaking petrol tanks, wiring looms that caught fire…and then I bought it from my father. Think that it lasted a year before meeting the metal merchants.

Never got to have one of these but had two of it's predecessor, the brilliant Renault 17. A white 1972 17TL and a red 1978 17TS, 1647cc all aluminium engine, wet liners, weber twin choke carb. Frameless doors with wind down windows behind the seats so the cabin was completely open and some had a full length sun roof. Bucket seats with spring loaded pads to support the back of the knees and adjustable back supports. Unfortunately both eventually got the dreaded tin worm. I wonder if any of these have survived?

The 17 was 12 based, right?

I worked in a company that had 12 Estates (and a couple of 5s) as pool cars - when we needed to go and see a customer we used one of the cars (sometimes we carted computers around too).

The 12s were remarkably fast from 0-about 12mph - I can recall leaving a 911 for dead for a few yards once - but generally they were pretty dire smile

If we ever got the chance we'd use the 5, but a favourite game was to see if we could drive the 12s all the way to a customer without once using the clutch. Surprisingly they didn't seem to break down too often.

Hi Guys,
I'm new here and all this Renault Talk has finally made me join up. I have been surrounded by Renaults my entire life, and indeed now I work in a Renault Dealership. I had a rather large collection of Classic Renaults including a Fuego a couple of years ago, but I ended selling them after I lost my previous job. I do have my pride and joy left though.
A 1982 R18 Turbo with only 42000 genuine miles. Here is a pic--enjoy--I certainly do.

Fond Fuego memories indeed for me... well sort of.

It cost me £100 when I put a deposit down on one for my first car before getting a quote for insurance. I lost my deposit, you can work out the rest!

My more distinctive memory of it was in my Dad's 2.0ltr GTX when I was sitting in the back of it aged around 12 on our driveway. Some kind of argument took place and I chose this as the one and only time in my life to tell my Dad to f*** off. I exited the car over the top of the front seats, pulled by my hair, and landed straight into a rose bush!!! Oh how I wished it had four doors!

It was a great car in its day but alas, I don't think time has treated it well. I prefer the look of that R18 Turbo cool

Fantastic! I'm all for the more off beat form of motor car. I love the Turbos in the Orangy Red color scheme and Decals.
More of these motoring raritys for SOTW please!

Thats the decal that I was talking about! Paint that Maroon and that's a dead ringer for my dad's old car!
