In the E39's defence - those evolution pictures only show the prefacelift car, while the E60 is postfacelift, which just makes it look older!

Well, if any competitor were worried BMW would follow the Z4 line of design, they can throw their head back and laugh in relief now. That thing's a hippo.

Awful. Looks like Dolly Parton tripped and dented the bonnet. Totally unexceptional IMHO but then I've yet to see a good modern car, they're all ugly with these pedestrian-friendly bonnets. Pedestrians should be banned and car design returned to the artists who used to style them, not the brick manufacturers with a lump chisel.

What is the issue with the price?

The 520D SE is £625 more than the old version, and for your money your getting more power, leather seats as standard and a better stereo.

Its cheaper than its closest rival, the Mercedes E220 CDI SE, once you have taken into account next years vat increase and the 2010 Mercedes price rises.

It looks as big as the old 7 series. Not a bad thing I suppose, but I wonder if weight has increased. Any spec sheets released?

Not yet, all we know is the base prices for each engine and that leather is finally standard fit smile

It took you 20 months to come up with that?

I really don't see the resemblance myself....

Funny, those evolution pictures.

This one in particular.

The E34 is still the best-looking '5.

It's not great-looking, but its not awful. It merely 'is'. The motoring equivalent of Dido album, looks wise. I'm sure it's lovely to drive, though. Not for me, sadly.

The car looks like a large 3 Series, and the over exaggerated front grill is just not in proportion with the rest of the car? Not bothered really, should be a good drive.

It's the oddestlaunch to make a big thing of. I knew what it would look like this morning. It would look like a three series but a little bigger. That's the way it is (excusing the Bangle days) and BMW know that non-offencive styling will sell more cars.

The important bit really isn't the way it looks, it's the way it drives and the way it copes with day to day life. I can tell you exactly how it drives too. Itll be a little bit more resolved and a little sharper than the old one, while riding a little better. It'll cost a little bit less to service, be more exonomical and is a little bit more recyclable.

Couldn't agree more.
Looking at the evolution pic, I get it now. The new 5er basically looks like a photoshopped version of the E60, or an E60 which has crashed into something, and then had something large and heavy fall on the bonnet.
Don't get me wrong, it's not ugly. I wouldn't go as far as to call it that... But it's just not right. Liking the sunroof though (just noticed that the E60 is the only one in that lineup not to sport one)

= )

Stop, stop, stop, I can't take it anymore. This is so typical of the bunch of mindless keyboard jockeys that seem to call PH home. Read your own posts people. There are at least 10 posts calling the car boring before its unveiled! If I had as much time as most of the rest of you clearly do, I could find 100 posts about "old" BMW design calling it quirky, ugly, hideous etc. Make up you minds.

And for all you people of slim intellect, the reason why cars are different to the 80's is a big word called "legislation" its tricky and affects a lot of things. Look it up. Oh and stop looking at new cars and subscribe to a classic website.

New cars are from a different era. They can still be awesome driving machines (as I guess this will be). Last time BMW launched a 5 series they changed car design hugely, this is certainly not that jump again, but I for one think its a well judged piece of design. Put its this way, for those of us who think the E class now looks Korean, who are not Jag people, and who are not sure what an A6 even looks like! this is a nice choice!

Phew.

Looks so much better than the last Bangle one, which I could not get accustomed during its whole production period. Similarly handsome like the pre-Bangle generation, even has shades of Quattroporte at the front.
Should drive excellent too, judging by the 5 series GT reviews.

I quite like it. It's not the boldest design though, granted. But after Bangles past horrors I get the impression BMW are playing it safe.
Still, like it or not.. We had better get used to it, as theres going to be many many thousands of them around pretty soon!
