My line of snottering success has come to an end. frown

I bought a cheapy Impreza Turbo off ebay with no tax or test, and when taking it for retest on Thursday (having fitted new rear discs/pads) I gave it some welly for the first time to warm it up properly for the emissions test and the engine now seems to be comprehensively buggered.

Picked the old 626 Mazda up this morning.Guy wasn't joking about the history as it has lots.It was his Mum & Dads car from new.Can hardly hear it running! No real wear inside and no body rust I can see, either. The grey/black looking bits on the bottoms of the rear arches in the rear sill area are plastic covers and not filler or rust as I expected! Has a few paint chips and a bit of spray on the front bumper, but not a bad and relatively straight old girl for 20 odd years old.

Wheel covers were removed as soon as I got it home, obviously.

I've been semi-keeping my eye open for one of these. Would love one. Going to be using my dads v70 tdi over the winter though driving
Don't get one, bought it too save money, it only managed 40mpg, which isn’t great considering diesel costs more than petrol, tax was £220, the engine was slow and very noisy. Sold it for £450 after just 2 weeks.

Is it smoking?
Could be lucky and something is just very very loose (engine mount, gearbox mount, manifolds etc) I suppose at least with a scooby its parts are in demand and will sell quickly. Speaking of which what wheels does it have? If they're 6 spoke standard gold ones I know somebody who will buy at least one.

I thought that, at first I thought it was knacked (big end) but as I watched the clip I wasn't sure.

I'd PM JollyGreenMonster on here (link to his profile) and ask him to have a listen http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/profile.asp?h=0...

JGM is one of the most respected Impreza tuners out there and is a top chap from all of his postings and what the community always says about him.

I appreciate that it was your car to do as you pleased with, but I'm afraid doing that to a decent car just marks you out as being a bit of a plonker IMO.

i would agree with you but pictures are deceiving

I dont know how it passed and MOT before i bought it as there were holes everywhere.....

so i dont feel bad as it was a rotter before i bought it, but needed something cheap and quick to get me out of a fix at the time.

it wouldnt pass another MOT without substantial welding to several areas....

hence i had a bit of fun and drove around looking like a ttty barry boy going for the "rat look"!

I thought it was amusing at the time doing it to a crap escort though!

We live and learn.... we live and learn!....

Good stuff, I'd be interested too see the article!

It's amazing what can be had for little money these days.

I consider my Impreza RB5 to be cheap (4k) and its had about 2k spent on it so far (mostly minor stuff) and I consider that a bargin although not a snotter!! My company car that has just been returned (end of company lease) was over 21k with options! (Golf TDI SE).

I'm almost certain its a bearing failure. It rattles on start up for a second, idles ok, will rev slowly up to 3k and rattles from then on in. Also will rattle when blipping the throttle, but not on the overrun.Doesn't smoke, but will get very hot.

In summary, it's fked!

Oh frown

I hope you didn't pay too much for it.

If you're willing breaking Impreza's will usually lead to a very healthy profit. Lots of good, working Impreza's are getting bought to be broken right now.

It's certainly not unusual, from what I have seen on doing some brief research. Often attributed to incorrect oil and filter change procedure.
