This is actually mine!
What do we think of the price? I'm getting more inclined to keep it with each passing day!
I think that looks decent, especially with the work that's been done. The price seems entirely reasonable to me. I'm after an estate, but if it was a saloon I needed I'd be all over it.What do we think of the price? I'm getting more inclined to keep it with each passing day!

I've owned 12v 300, 24v 280 and 24v 300, and all are different.
300-24 would be my choice of them all for its character and performance. Add to this that it's the most economical, and its a winner.
The head gasket thing is a bit of a red herring, specialists on here report the problem is over reported, but regular oil changes are important. All seep a little oil at the front of the block, but not enough to be an issue.
Best of the lot us the 3.6 24v which has uprated AMG gaskets etc, but strangely I don't think it would suit the r129 chassis.
I've been considering a 6-cylinder W124 but, having test-driven a 300-24, I figured a power band starting at over 5,000 revs wouldn't really be much use to me as I wouldn't thrash an old engine that hard to access the extra power. 300-24 would be my choice of them all for its character and performance. Add to this that it's the most economical, and its a winner.

Have not driven the 12v 300 yet, but I'm afraid it might feel a bit slow, with only 177hp (reduced from original 188 on early W124s), a high torque peak (around 4400rpm?) and an autobox which starts in second gear anyway.
Also, is the 12v engine not equally, susceptible to head gasket failure at around the 100k mark?
I assume the economy of these older engines is worse than the later 2.8 and 3.2 with EFI?
Seems to me the best engine is the 3.2, as it develops more torque at lower revs than the older engines and can be had with the 5-speed auto. Obviously requiring wiring loom to be sorted....

Gents, why hasn't this sold yet? Is it really, really overpriced?
The right engine, good spec, great history, change the clear front indicators back and job done!

The velour does it for me too.
Given that heated leather is hardly common, is heated cloth a rarity or a misprint?

Will have to test drive one I guess. Coming from a diesel with 300 lb ft. at 2000rpm will require some adjustment.I'd prefer a pre-facelift car for the looks and better quality but the later EFI engines would be torquier and more suited to LPG conversion if I find a 'keeper'.

Did you see how much this went for?

Doesn't half cheer me up.

I don't wish to be psessimistic but that almost seems like it went for too much! I wonder if it has sold or will be re-listed? Certainly lots of bidding activity with 47 bids... £3,666!
Doesn't half cheer me up.

for those who liked MTSVs 300E, how about this one? A lovely colour combination:

eta. it's got the wrong 15-holes on, easy to find replacements
Not massively far from me if anyone wants me to have a look of they're genuinely interested. http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C487706#

BGarside, you need to test drive the 300-24. If I can draw an analogy to contemporary VW engines, the Mercedes multi valve is nothing like the peaky delivery of the mark 2 Golf GTI 16v. Its a muscular free-revving unit that is more eager and more vocal than the later 320.
In my experience it's better on fuel too, but my 300-24 has the 5-speed auto, which may help.
The 3.6 is the ultimate Merc straight 6 for me, especially in the (comparatively) light weight C36.

I've always said I've had a soft spot for Mercs in general of this era, as well as the W126 and later W140.....but I'll conceed the W124 has grown on me more and more because of this thread. I've spent thousands of miles as a passenger and also a driver of an old 190e 2.0 which was nice but didn't think it was anything amazing, is the W124 really much of a step up? That said, it wasn't the finest example.
Now I just need to go and try one. I'm worried that they'll feel hideously slow and noisy compared to both the E38 and especially E65. I do absolutely love the elegance of the interiors though, modern interiors just don't have that lovely simplicity.
I guess, in supercar terms, that's why I really quite like the McLaren 12C and it's interior.....it's just.....well, nice and simple but purposeful

I'm really tempted to view that W124! It's about 30mins away from where I work....
