Scenario 3
Buy a decent used blandmobil. Cheap, decent MPG, probably no huge repair bills.

A gas guzzling old V8 makes zero sense.
If that is how you feel then why not save even more and get the Bus or Train? The v8 is a car for the enthusiast, not those who want something bland

i am an analyst so apologies more shedanomics: (based on 1 year)

Scenario 1 Buy a new Peugeot for £10k
Depreciation £3k, petrol (based on approx 350 miles per week @ 40mpg) £2500; £150 interest cost on finance; £500 insurance; total cost £6,150 (based on them chucking in a free service)

Scenario 2
Audi 200 V8
Depreciation £395 (you'll at least still get £500 for parts alone); petrol £5,000; £1,000 insurance (approx); total cost £6,395

So your running costs over 1 year would vary by £250 (plus admittedly some reactive costs parts etc but to be fair whilst old these things are very well built)

But based on this logic a) buy it, quick before i do and b) why do people buy new cr4ppy cars?

Edited - poor maths due to hangover

Now run the same for years 2 and 3 and I think you will get the answer.

Senario 4...don't apply logic to every purchase, especially cars

A Peugeot doing 20k a year is soon going to start falling apart and will depreciate heavily until it is 4 years old then it'll level off at about £3k for a while (with 80k miles on it) then it'll be in SOTW territory a couple of years later by which point the V8 will be a sought after classic worth £3-4k smile Its all vague etc however my point was, that whilst petrol would obviously be an issue, you can offset the cost against depreciation on new cars which i hope (in my clumsy manner) i have proved. Its a shame LPG didn't kick off LPG is about 80p per litre around here so to reclaim your £1000 outlay... Only kidding i won't do anymore sums!

I would have thought so, all it has to do is give a visual indication of your real time speed. It doesn't even have to be accurate, as calibration is not checked, only operation. They obviously wont be able to check it on the brake rollers, but then most car speedometers wouldn't register the kind of speeds the rollers do anyway. I'm not sure what they will introduce to test the speedo, outside of a short drive on the road outside the testing centre.

I've got a 4.2 A8 nowadays from 1997

WeBuyAnyCar value it at £695 and it's almost spotless so should be in SOTW soon.

I'm keeping my eye out. But I'll probably buy one when I see one... Heck, i'd even take a 2.8 or 3.7 one of those... but we're still a bit out...

great choice, when Audi were still doing things differently.

They sound fantastic, not seen a 4.2 in this shape for yonks. usually the smaller bore one. I am sure i wil be corrected but i recall theser are a 60/40 split. not 50/50. thus why the diff is so popular for the S2 lads.

A lot of car for the money, not many V8s in the bracket that classify for SOTW. A fine choice!

A comment on fuel economy.

I got my 4.2 to AVERAGE 47.5mpg (on the dash computer)by driving analy on a motorway like Jeremy Clarkson. However it takes more effort and concentration than just flooring it all the way.

I live close to a chap that owns 1 of the others, in white - always seems to have various old Audis peeking out from underneath tarpaulins.

Wonderful cars when Audi were still making mechnically decent cars rather than just visually decent ones. My old man had a 2.2 100 of the same vintage and the thing was indestructable.

Insurance sucks on a big motor, as does fuel economy - but if your mileage is quite low then they aren't too unviable as you can buy them cheap as chips.

When these first came out, I nipped into the Audi dealer in Abeerdeen one Sunday afternoon, wearing T-shirt and jeans.

I asked the salesman if they had a demo, he said quote as he pointed to the A8 (around 32k then I think), "Here's the keys sir, go and have fun"............ my son who was around 10 at the time said to me "Isn't he coming with us Dad?", the salesman said

"Bums in seats sell cars, not salesman", so had a lovely drive to Stonehaven and back, excellent drive.

Lovely shed this week. Bargetastic, rare and a V8.

Closest shed to perfection for a long time.
