Top Shed. Good barge. Kak colours still put some folk off = better value for those not bothered = even better shed value.
Agreed, all the better to blend into the background and make unobstrusive progress. I think my favourite beige is the washed out on the Golf IV based Seat Toledo and Leon and the beige used on the Alfa 156 and GT.

The lady who runs my local taxi firm is going back to running late Omegas (having leased new cars which costs a fortune) - she reckons they're brilliant, reliable, cheap as chips to run, comfy and when kept clean they still look kind of smart?!!
My local taxi firm used to have an Omega in the metallica gold/beige colour seen in this week's shed. I always used to hope that car was coming when I ordered a taxi as it was a pleasure to be carted around in. I love the dashboard and the instrument cluster, still looks class.Big Rod said:

Absolutely cracking car and went like a hoofing great go-kart. Thirsty bugger thoguh, I don't think I could get any more than 27MPG out of it no matter how gently I treated the throttle!
I miss it.

Maybe he's a trader moving out a shed?
Given what he says about part ex' at the end of the ad I'd say it's quite likely.Maybe he's a trader moving out a shed?
If I could afford to fuel it I'd definitely run that for a year or two.

Thank you. I was rather partial to it myself. Sadly sold to a bloke off OOF in Hertfordshire. Johnspex said:

I know what you mean. It was a car bought to fit the car allowance scheme of the company I was with, (previously had a breathed on 24v Senator but it was too old!), and I only got 12p a mile. I did end up somewhat out of pocket! Some bargain Omegas out there !. Pretty much bullet proof as long as you change the cam belt, kit and water pump every 40k miles (£300 ish including parts).
My facelift (last model) 3.0 V6 Elite has just passed 180k miles (Ive put 110k of those on), was going to get shot of it a year ago but as everything still works I'm keeping it a bit longer.

It's nice, but not as nice or reliable as a Jag x300 or BMW e38
X300 maybe but E38- not so sure about that! They are generally pretty reliable. Oil coolers can go, breather pipes need the occassional clean out to prevent the rocker covers leaking, prettyu hard on wishbones. All in all nothing too bad.
Ours never caused any real grief.
I expect they really like to rust also, as all the other Vauxhauls of the time do
Top shed, had a 2.5 and loved it I would have an estate version in an instant.
As has been said though if you're going for this one make sure the cambelt really has been changed. My one snapped and trashed the engine. It's a double overhead cam V6 so four camshafts, most general garages won't touch it as there's a special tool to line them all up and it's not worth them buying the tool for one owner. Which means either DIY or main dealer.

I'd look for a manual if I was you. Very few private cars spec'd with manual but should be able to pick up a non-white liveried ex-plod (undercover, special protection etc) model if you hunt around.
Generally cars picked for Police use aren't that troublesome, because of the large mileage in a short time they have to put up with.

Weak auto gearbox (I think it was also used in some Saabs, and known in Saab cirlces as a bit iffy).
Mine was thrashed relentlessly and the only grumble it had was the selector switch got dirty. Quick clean and it was as good as new. Aren't Saabs FWD though?ITech said:
Headgasket not that unusual either.
I've moved in Vx barge circles for many a year and I've never heard of a CHG letting go! The oil cooler failing does give CHG symptoms though which is quite common but an easy fix.ITech said:
So 2 major potential problems that the e38 and x300 do not suffer from, along with the others you mentioned and the flimsy cheap plastic trim.
TBH, I thought mine was finished quite nicely and it stood up to quite a bit of abuse.ITech said:
Then theres the fact that you have to do the Cambelt and tensioners, quite a job I believe, which of course isn't a problem on the x300 or e38 as they have chains..
Chains aren't indestructable and the ones I've done, (albeit not on the other examples you mentioned!), are a worse job that the cambelt on these!ITech said:

OK, I'll give you that, but X300 Jags aren't much better!Edited by Big Rod on Friday 20th January 15:59
