I think in years to come it will be the E60 with its V10 that will come to be revered with its charismatic free-reving, last of the naturally aspirated M5's. This one just seems a little too functional so I can entirely understand where the leaving you cold comes from. Just seems to lack charisma and the syling is rather average too. I'm not sold on it and thats after having spent some time in one too.

Regards,

Mr. CC
Spot on, the V10 even though i wasn't much of a fan of BMW was a deligtful thing. It was unoque in that it wasn't just another V8.

I think it is more likely to be the E39 M5 that turns out to be the "revered one" due to its relative simplicity. The E60 was fabulous but was overcomplicated with the gearbox and all the different modes. The Bangleised styling wasnt something that I got used to easily either.

For me it boils down to looks. The Merc has always looked far too big with crass styling in and out. A truly ugly car. The M5 always seems to look more elegant.

If you're a fat German who wants an autobahn-express buy the Merc. And people will think you're a taxi as well.

I would never buy a car that plays an engine sound through the sound system.
I have read and heard this sentiment a lot about the F10M and to be honest I don't understand the issue. I have to admit that I was also a little put off when I first heard about this but thinking about it, it is only another technical solution to what other manufacturers have been doing for years. Porsche said when they launched the 996 that they worked on the exhaust for ages to get the sound to resemble that of the air-cooled engines - the noise that comes out of the exhaust of current 911s is engineered to sound how we think it should sound based on their heritage and not how a water-cooled Porsche engine would normally sound.

Turbo charge engines have a reputation for not producing a great noise in comparison to NA engines so I suppose BMW thought they would enhance it a bit, and once you drive one you will not have an issue.
Think of it the other way around.

Lots of people change the exhaust on their car to get an engine note that they prefer. Can you imagine the comments you'd get on a PH forum if you suggested that instead of changing the exhaust on a Ferrari 550, for example, you thought you'd go to an audio specialist to get some speakers wired up to replicate the sound?

Personally I found this blog intriguing. I know I for one would much rather read from a motoring journalist who dares poke his head above the parapet and say "Hang on a minute, there's something about this that just doesn't feel right," rather than follow the rest of the herd.

Maybe given more time to get used to it, or to get his finger on quite what it is that's irking him, Dan will be able to offer a more in-depth discussion. But then, that would be the distinction between a "Blog post" and an "Article" wouldn't it?

+1

The "sound" of a car is very much a part of the experience. Spending time and money tuning and shaping the pipes and baffles to get an evocative noise is an artform, almost, and can bring as much to a car's character as the styling. Where's the fun if only you can hear it?

Bizarre? It's a bad joke of the kind even the Germans should laugh at.

IMO the M5 has become uglier with each new generation car, the e34 and e28 before that were stunning,

Performance-wise the M5's are untouchable however

I always thought that the new M5 would be the car that I would own next, but I have to be honest, the guy who lives 3 doors down from me has just taken delivery of his new E63..... I have never heard anything like it!!! My house nearly shakes when he drives past! I think I may be falling in love......

It is only a development of previous ideas. Jaguar used to pipe engine noise into the XK8 (apparently).

Even though I haven't driven the F10, I am thoroughly put off by the notion of artificial sound effects through the stereo system.

Such a notion, to my mind, is utterly reprehensible.

With respect, the E28 is the best looking smile ( subjective I know, but also owned all three)

& listen to what the market is telling you.

Getting real engine noise into the cabin (which BMW have done before) is a bit different from playing generated computer Muzak through the stereo and pretending it's the engine.

Indefensible, the antithesis of ///M, how the mighty are fallen etc.

So no one has any thoughts on a car that in many ways is a better drive on most roads the XFR? j

Passionately agree.

I'm staggered it was green lighted at any level/point.

he also likes the M5 though. he says it does everything very, very well and said it feels like it's 1600kgs not 1900 or whatever it is; and that, at heart, it's still a proper lunatics car.

WRT noise you can't have your apples, oranges and pears all at once, not in a car with this much refinement and insulation.
No one ever complained about too much serenity when passing 150MPH and still being able to hold a conversation.

It sounds better than 99% of cars out there, and if it sounded like a silly F458 it would be ridiculous and sent packing. The engine noise is enhanced in the best way without drilling your ear drums out like those silly Fiats that everyone assumes is a great noise.
