RE: New Cayman toughens up

I parked my Audi A3 Sportback (admittedly a nice one, black with Audi sport bodykit) next to the old Cayman once, and I genuinely thought the A3 was the far better looking vehicle and I remember thinking to myself. 'something seriously wrong here'.

Blimey, only 2000 sold in europe, that is pitiful. Had no idea market was that small.
Its too expensive ... every other coupe is about £2k cheaper than the soft top, Porsche has it the other way round. When the Cayman was first mooted Autocar had it as a £25k car or about £5k more than a Golf Gti at the time. Now its nearly £40k and that's £10k more than a Nissan 370Z and £15k more than a Golf Gti/Focus ST etc

Auto Express Preview from LA.
Looks better in video than pictures I reckon. Still not convinced by that colour though!
Yep, Cayman definitely looks even better 'live'. Auto Express Preview from LA.

But what a tool presenter; come back William Woolard, all is forgiven. And it's good to hear that the new Cayman will have "even better 'hand-link'". Pillock.

Can anyone explain why the Cayman is more expensive than equivalent Boxster? I cant see where the extra goes to!
Exactly, the roof and mechanism for the Boxster MUST make it more expensive to build. If they're only shifting 5000 units between them then they have the price wrong.
They need an entry level engine ...

I like the new Cayman, but it just so expensive in comparison to the TT. Even if we were to be unfair and compare the brand new Cayman to the soon to be replaced TT, it is very hard to see where the extra money has gone', apart from the badge that is!
To my eyes, it isn't as nice looking, the interior still doesn't look or feel as special, it's not much faster, its running costs are astronmical by comparison and it’s hugely more expensive. I know its supposedly better to drive, but TBH I drove a Cayman S Design Edition 1 recently, and because the power is all at the top of the rev range, it doesn't feel as fast as even the 2.0T at normal speeds - maybe I'm just used to a more linear torque curve. The second thing that I found annoying was the thing that Cayman owners rant on about - the 'feel' of driving the car. The steering wheel chatter, the heavy clutch, notchy gears - I always thought these were all great things but do you know what, I tired of all of the constant feedback - not exactly relaxing when you want it to be!
It will be interesting to see how the Mk3 TT compares to the new Cayman given that Audi have said that it will be much more of a driver's car…one thing's for sure, it will still be an awful lot cheaper!
Lol... Really!!! And I'm a TTSGuy... A lot of TT owners will defend their cars to the hilt, and of course lean on Quattro to say it's another reason why it's better than a Cayman. Audi have said the next TT will be more of drivers car, well see. You forgot to mention that Audi also said they will move it slightly up market. It won't be as expensive as a Cayman/Boxster but how close can it get before you know what you have to do... buy the Porsche.
And TT steering... It's rubbish... My old 205 1.9 & 306 GTi 6 had steering the TT could only dream of.

The A3 is definitely the more handsome vehicle (from the front at least, which is the view I got and the one I was referring to in my post).
I prefer the older one- has a whiff of 904 about it.
I realize that most folk like to lambast Porsche for any number of things- styling, price, image, building a 4x4....the list goes on. Disregard The Beetle comments, read up on the history of the company, it's achievements in racing and rallying- and the vast number of successes, one make series and so on, and perhaps even a little background to the finances of the company over the years which explains some of the parts bin/component sharing and why additional ranges were created, and then see them for what they are- a relatively affordable, usable, practical and generally reliable car.
Obviously the looks are a personal thing, but until you drive one, and if possible live with it for a while, as a car enthusiast, I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss them- a range of products that have been honed and improved over the years, and very much evolution not revolution.
Anyone who is a car enthusiast would struggle not to be impressed with a Cayman.
I don't own one, but have been lucky enough to drive and borrow those of friends on numerous occasions, but having owned a 964, it would be fair to say that it got under my skin like no other car has, and I look forward to ownership again at some stage in the future- the current Cayman R in Viper green would do very nicely.

Remember these are just European sales - which make up a little over 1/3 of worldwide sales. If they're only shifting 5000 units between them then they have the price wrong.
