Guess they found the missing tapes in their 'for training purposes only' cabinet
Glad it was sorted; but as the OP said, why the hell did it have to come to this?!
Imagine the fun there would've been if the vehicle had gotten in a shunt during the time between cover being cancelled and the letter arriving...

Amen.
What I find funny is the "xx% discount" that they give car club members. You could call up AF saying that you are a member of herpes anonymous and get the same quote.
However, the 'discount' they offer on car clubs seems to have a (possibly desired?) effect that any negative posts towards AF are often deleted.

I have had quotes from Flux before (infact I did take a policy with them once I think) and I got the quote then said "Oh yeah I am a member of PH so get their 15% discount too". The guy on the phone said "Oh that's already been applied". WTF?!
Shady.

If Tesco were to offer everyone 15% off their shopping and once you got to the checkout "oh yes that's already been taken off" all hell would break loose.
Maybe we need to get some PPI-like hounds involved. Get everyone who took out an AF policy with "15% off" to actually get that said amount back, because its clearly totally faux.

Hello,
In response to the questions surrounding “Owners Club Discounts” – I can assure you these are genuine and thought I’d try to illustrate this.
Please find below two examples of screen shots of premium breakdowns on different schemes with different insurers where we have negotiated owners club discounts on your behalf as we recognise that the genuine enthusiast represents a better risk– there are many more I could show you but hopefully this is sufficient to make a point.
If you use the dedicated telephone number that we provide PH with, our staff can see where you’re calling from and they also ask where you got our number and so if you say PH then they will tick the owners club box and the discount will apply, which is why you may get the response "that's already been applied".
Hopefully this answers some of your questions and I promise I’ve not just knocked these up on excel
Thanks
Ash

That sounds reasonable and could be completely true.
Far more of an issue are all of the cases that Ive seen over the last two days where AF have pulled the carpet out from under new policy holders shortly after inception, for weak and spurious reasons (weak according to insurers who have struggled to explain why when they havent required it), which usually involve AFs retention of a substantial amount of money.

The money "lost" from the discounts has to come from somewhere... I have had a similar situation with a different insurer, a high naval rank.
In my case I swapped vehicles, and I was told twice(i was sure to categorically check this) that the policy had been transferred to the new car, turns out it never was.
Calls to insurers should be recorded by law and retained by an independent regulator.

Get anything important to be relayed to you in writingIn my case I swapped vehicles, and I was told twice(i was sure to categorically check this) that the policy had been transferred to the new car, turns out it never was.

I do this for ALL policy changes ever since the same insurer you mention was informed that I'd resigned my job with no immediate work lined up. "Very good, thank you" they said. I asked if anything on my policy had changed and was told no
Only three months later I was about to drive my parent's car, didn't have my insurance certificate to hand so called them only to find out they're removed my DOC cover when I informed them of my change in circumstances!!
Narrowly avoided the chance of six points and a ststorm there...

interestingso, just to be sure, we should ask for your best possible quote and say we got the number from directory enquiries
then, only when we've been quoted, we should ask for the discount ?

I did repeatedly ask them to email confirmation also, but they never did.

If they weren't guilty and these tapes were evidence of this, why pay out?
Because being contractually right (which they probably were) and "being fair" are not judged by the same standards for consumer policies. Being able to cancel a policy for no particular reason doesn't mean you *should* do it.
AF haven't exactly covered themselves in glory.

You can bet your bottom dollar, PH won't do anything about it as AF & PH are in bed together.
I'll remember this thread at renewal!
Good work for getting it sorted OP.. Surprised it was allowed to stay unlocked though..
