The ever growing rise of the full fat macho SUV(X5 ,RR, Cayenne et al ) is a total mystery to me;if I may make an analogy it is as if what everybody really really wanted was to walk down the high street wearing ski boots. Because they look tough, outdoorsy and macho and have the added attraction of being able to inflict damage on any trainer wearing upstart who gets in the way. Trouble is, skiboots are really rubbish to walk in. So Miles in marketing has his brainstorm and comes up with skiboots that are actually OK to walk in ,still look tough, and still can stamp on trainers . The fact that they still weigh twice as much as a normal shoe , are now compromised for their original purpose and cost a fortune isn't an issue for the sheep like buyers. Result...
Imagine the original 4x4s never existed. Now imagine that people who drive saloons are interested in a car which does everything a saloon does but also let's you sit higher up and see more, has more space but isn't larger in footprint and also is better on the typical offroad situation an average person finds themselves in once in a while.
I think if you look at modern SUVs as an evolution from the old family saloon they suddenly make sense. When you look at them as an evolution from specialist 4x4s they don't.
These are the modern day Cortinas, Granadas, Cavaliers, XJ6, Rovers etc. not modern day Land Rovers or Jeeps.
wow theres some anti 4x4 ste on here.
i have have a bad back i'd love one of these cw a saloon as its easier to get my 3 year old and me in and out. i live in the country so although i wont be offroading it some grip would be good when its snowing / wet leaves etc. ive had some scary moments in a boxster before sometimes a 4x4 is safer. I have a wife and kid and would feel theyre safer in this even though they may well be as safe in a modern saloon. it will fit most stuff in without having to bend down and drag stuff out of a boot. it would be a second car thats for going on family days out etc one can always have a sports car as well. its a lovely size in that i dont want a 5 series type car. the porsche experience in my experience is second to none in terms of service etc. it makes u feel good driving it. imhp it looks as good as a suv can. and yes i like the image. is there anything wrong with that?
so i want one. so naaaa

I found my Evo plenty comfortable, and a modern 911 is very comfortable.
Oh behave. HahaI found my Evo plenty comfortable, and a modern 911 is very comfortable.
These modern SUVs are right up there in the 'as good as it gets' catergory when it comes to relaxed and comfortable drving, with 7 series and S Class about the only realistic everyday cars that beat them, certainly more comfy than the equivilent A6 etc.
A 911 and an Evo is just not anywhere near.
I was in M3's for ages and it was fine, I even drove a CSL as my everyday car for 7 months and 12k miles, again it was fine, but once you get into something really comfy and refined, going back to something like the above is always a compromise for those days you want to 'press on'.
I have to say that when I see a Scooby or Evo all blinged up I don't think there are about as showy as you can get.
I would be embarrassed driving one, same as in a cab, my wife had a cab and I used to fiddle with the radio at lights, hated it. I don't think that in a truck.
Different perceptions.

I guess I had my hopes up a bit too high when I saw mention of 35k for the base car.
I know it's 3.0tdi rather than the Evoque's 2.2 but with the evoque under 40k gets you a Dynamic spec car, with leather, sat nav, dab and full length glass roof. Seems the 43k macan, plus 2k sat nav etc etc will be more like 50k equivalent spec.
I think it looks great and I bet initial depreciation will be minimal.
Oh and do we really need the pointless bad taste jokes made whenever the Macan is mentioned?.

Different class of car to the Evoke. The Evoke is a posh competitor for the X1, not the Q5, X3 or Macan.I know it's 3.0tdi rather than the Evoque's 2.2 but with the evoque under 40k gets you a Dynamic spec car, with leather, sat nav, dab and full length glass roof. Its too small and too slow.

Petrol or diesel?
I placed my order for a diesel today but looking at the specs now the difference in price to the turbo narrows to nearer 10k once the extra spec is considered. Seems rude not to change
Petrol if residuals were decent, but they won't be, everyone will want the diesel. I placed my order for a diesel today but looking at the specs now the difference in price to the turbo narrows to nearer 10k once the extra spec is considered. Seems rude not to change
It might only be £10k more, but it will also loose £10k more at least, which makes it a very pricey motor over 2 to 3 years.

The rear of the Macan could very well be the rear of a new to be announced Golf R but just pumped.Anyway, it's rather small next to Sharapova.

Well, as Miles' job is to find new clients and offer them products they'll buy, it seems he has done a great job.But I agree: it never ceases to amaze me how many people will fork out a lot of money for ugly/ unncecessary things in the belief that it somehow gives them more value (more a fashion and accessory problem - I don't have any great issues with the Cayenne as such, although the X6 is indeed an abomination and the best example of what you describe)

Maybe... but when I see someone dossed out in exclusive brands, eating with their mouth open and holding their fork in the air, I wonder if they think "wow, people must think I'm real classy cos' I'm wearing a Dior scarf..."Anyway, I realise I'm taking this way off topic, so my apologies for my little rant.

i'd argue a dior scarf is practically the same as a cheap scarf thats same colour etc. a porsche macan is diff to say a kia 4x4Anyway, I realise I'm taking this way off topic, so my apologies for my little rant.
