This car is just baffling.
3 series saloon. Okay.
3 series GT, a sort of weird bootlid version of the 3 series saloon.
4 series - a 2-door coupe version of the 3 series, okay.
But then, a 4 series GT with 4 doors. So, is it a 4 door version of the 2 door version of the 4 door version of the 3 series?
I'm sure it will sell as well as the 5 series GT.
There is no 4GT!3 series saloon. Okay.

The 4 is no longer just a 2-door 3-series though. It's different. And as the CLS/640d/A5 have proved, there is a market for a more stylish version of a normal saloon - people will pay a premium for it. BMW would be raw stupid to ignore!
I bet you a case of curly wurlies that it will outsell the 5GT by 10:1

I genuinely don't understand how the 4GC and the 3GT are sufficiently different from each other? They appear to be almost identical? Whats the difference?
One is a 3 that is based more on space and practicality, less on style, true 5 seats, 3-series touring space, 5-series legroomOne is a 4 that is based more on style than on practicality and space. 4+1 seats, less than 3-series space.

Look at pictures below,
Understand?
The design around the C-pillar is very different. the 3GT's glass-house is significantly higher and further back at the rear, making it look rather arse-heavy; the 4GC is much better proportioned.
Having said that, if I saw one from the distance without the other to compare it to, I'm not I could tell which it was. That situation is hardly unique to BMW, though.

the other thing to bare in mind is the 3GT is the best part of 20cm longer, 14cm taller and a smidge narrower. I suspect that when you see them in real life, the overall proportions will look more differentHaving said that, if I saw one from the distance without the other to compare it to, I'm not I could tell which it was. Most of the obvious differences in those photos are accounted for by the fact one is an M Sport and the other is not.On the road, they are a very different. More so than the std 3 and 4 are different from each other.... And that is before the packaging differences.

Even as an f30 owner I'll be the first to admit they are all bloody similar
That's not to say it is a bad thing, just mildly amusing
Such is the way of all cars, especially German's nowadays. Audi/Merc/BMW have taken a family face to the extent that they are starting to become indistinguishable across the range. Audi are the worst IMO.That's not to say it is a bad thing, just mildly amusing
Back on topic.... The 435d will be close to the optimum car for all but irrational diesel-haters & those who need to carry 3 or more 6-footers on a regular basis.
310bhp/450lb ft, 4WD, [claimed] 50+mpg, high spec and all wrapped up in a very pretty body.
Oil burning or not....you have to marvel at the leaps in technology.

It'll be interesting to see what it offers over the touring (other than personal preferences in the styling). I wonder if it will be enough stiffer and/or lower to improve the handling to the point that anyone will notice.
The benefit will be all about style and the drive. If practicality is more important, the touring or GT will be the one to go for.
