What new car from 1990 would you run as a DD?

A good choice; I've never even been in this generation of M5 but I imagine I'd like the manual/straight 6 combination. Perhaps by having a new one it would avoid the issues that people seem to mention every time the e34 M5 comes up (how bad can it be compared to modern cars though?!)
A lot of love for the e34 (in various guises) on this thread, and deservedly so.When I bought it, my 3.6 M5 had one previous driver (company car then bought from company) until 8 years old and nearly 150k and the service records listed very little other than routine items until around 130k when it had a new gearbox from BMW.
BMW contributed to the cost substantially, surprising given the age and mileage at the time. Almost makes me wonder if the need for replacement was a result of a servicing boo-boo rather than wear / failure...
I averaged about 18mpg from mine, so fuel would be a bit painful as a daily now, however it was driven enthusiastically everywhere! How I gained zero points during my ownership remains, to this day, an utter mystery!
Edited to add, looking back, paying £8k for a highly strung performance car with 150k on the clock to use as a daily seems like an insane decision. I nearly didn't even test drive it due to the miles and since I was running a nice Integrale at the time I expected the M5 to feel like a baggy old barge.
However on the test drive I experienced a sensation I've never felt in a car before, or since, as within the first mile the entire car literally seemed to shrink to fit around me. And in that first mile, even on urban roads at 20% of what the car was capable of, I knew it was something I had to have in my life!!

Can't believe it's not been posted yet! Saab 900 T16S and has been my daily for 3.5 years
~250,000 miles, still goes like a train, puts the boot of space of any euro box today to shame, with seats down bigger load space than some estate cars. Joy to work on and parts are cheap. Also comes with heated leather seats, electric mirrors, cruise control and mid to low 30s mpg on motorway to boot.
This wouldn't actually be my first choice, but it's mine and it's from 1990 and I run it as a daily
Does everything I need, 150ish bhp, averages about 35mpg, easy to work on, can still get parts without too much fuss. Can fit a divan bed in the back and get the boot shut.
If I had to change it to something else from 1990 I'd go with an E34 touring. I do love an estate.

I'd consider buying a W124 estate but with all the options (280te or 300te-24, electric seats, air conditioning, sportline pack etc).
Could be a car for life if you were able to look after it from new!
Yup, that's the one, the 280te for me. Could be a car for life if you were able to look after it from new!
I should have bought one a few years ago, but the then Mrs SS7 was incredulous; "Why on earth do you want to buy an old banger like that?". She's since been traded in, but I still haven't got around to the W124.
