£40k For a Mid 90's Escort - The World Has Gone Mad!

No - the OP seems to be annoyed that his TVR is worth less than some old Escort, but you can get a nice R129 Merc for peanuts, so why should the TVR be worth more than one of those?
Genuine engineering excellence, cost a fortune new, still very useable now etc.
Indeed, the R129 is an engineering masterpiece. They're scandalously cheap now. Genuine engineering excellence, cost a fortune new, still very useable now etc.

It's just the speculative bubble in old cars - money finds a return. It will all go nasty soon enough; people won't be able to find a greater fool than them. After that no-body wants to catch a falling knife...
By all going nasty soon, do you mean as in someone buying a car for say £40k and it possibly being worth half that in a few years time?Even if that became the case, I think I'd prefer to have something like a £20k Escort Cossie stashed away in the garage rather than the likes of a 3-year old A4

Cheap to get into. But not to fix. I looked into these, before I bottled it and went for a newer CLS. I was warned that to fix broken air-con on some of these early era Mercedes can be a £4000 bill. Christ knows what the mechanical parts cost if they fail. Despite decent examples coming in under my cash budget, the worst case running costs are way out of my comfort zone!I also think Escort Cosworth prices are rediculous - but only because I want one.
And that is basically the reason for the mad prices I suspect; blokes, like me, who've reached a certain age and want the car that they adored as a spotty teenager. But most of these old cars have now fallen by the wayside, so whats left is in relatively high demand. Add into that a few chancing dealers topping up the price and you create the appreciating situation that the Cosworth finds itself in.
In its hayday, my Dad wasn't fussed - it's just a Ford (and probably a rusty fast ford now) but I lvoed them to bits. Similarly, the new Focus RS cars do nothing for me at all - but I bet the yoof of today go crazy for them.
Love Ford as a brand though. They're the best.

The last recession was only a few years ago, quoting one from 25 years ago is grasping at straws, and circumstances back then were very different to the current situation. Not going to happen, simple as.

Come the revolution comrades lol there is not going to be an bubble burst, didnt happen during the last recession so wont happen now either, levelling off maybe but people wont be buying back their old cars for half the value they recently sold them for, if you missed the boat then you missed the boat....move on
There was a massive classic car price crash in the late 1980s. It happened before, it will happen again. Much like the house price cycles of boom to bust. Or the stock market experiencing a correction. Any market which is driven by human greed and fear will follow the same path. Spot on, they are being bought for cash and become sunny weekend garage queens, no need to sell on anytime soon after that.
Also they are some of the last cars an amatuer can have a play with mechanically and do a spot of resto work on by simply unbolting, cleaning/painting and rebolting lots of bits, most of which is still readily available if your prepared to pay.

I have said it before on other threads, and I will say it again, I'm not sure about this being a bubble. I believe these cars that are gaining value are being bought by people who love the cars, and, they can afford them!
I'm inclined to agree. 80's cars are the next to go up. Saab 900 Turbos are stupidly cheap - they won't be in 5 years time. I've always loved the E21 3's - a 'car' moment from childhood. The end result is I've recently bought one - driving it was like being transported back to when I was a 8 year old lad in my uncles' brand new 323i. You can't put a price on that. might be rose tinted - but that sort of emotion is what's pushing prices up. B.J.W said:

Er, You can.... How much did you pay?A little off topic but I had a few Escorts in that era - the last being a GTI which had those nice Cossie alloys and the interior was different to the Cossie pics. I recall Ford facelifted the Escort in around '95 and gave it a new interior - did the Cosworths not get the interior facelift of the other models?

IMO, the Focus RS mk1 is the one to have right now. You can get one for 10 grand, it has a bit of rally pedigree thanks to Colin McRae's efforts in the Mk1 Focus and is every bit as quick as a standard Escort Cosworth, quicker round most tracks too I reckon...that's where my classic Ford money would go.

The Cosworth in question is nt really any old ford.
Its a Monte (limited run of cars)
Jewel violet (limited number painted in it)
So you "could" look on it as the moonstone blue scenario which attributes to the RS500, (which unless im remembering wrong less were painted that colour)
IMO this makes it "possibly" worth more but im in no way agreeing its worth 40k.

I lurk on a couple of forums that involve retro fords, Vw and others. It's common for a car to be advertised there for sale, sold then immediately placed back for sale by a dealer with a significantly larger price. Ok of your an owner, seller but fked if your a buyer who can't or won't pay those prices.B.J.W said:

Francois Delecour would have had a shot at the drivers' title but for smashing himself up in an F40
crash.
I recall from reading about it at the time that:crash.
- the F40 was yellow
- it belonged to his mate
- the incident occurred in the hills above Monaco
- he was hit by an amateur rally driver
Very little info seems to be available anymore, so can anyone confirm?
Proper rally legend in my eyes was Delecour, even if he never was a WRC title winner
