Well it's quite simple isn't it?
911 = Sportscar,
911 Turbo = Supercar,
Carrera GT = Hypercar.
911 Turbo - faster, sports coupe
Carrera GT - So nearly a 'supercar', Damn it, i'll concede that one (annoying clutch, kept getting my size 12 foot stuck!)
Sadly I think Aston are going the 911 way - a slow evolution of the same product with very little visible difference. And for that reason I don't consider them 'supercars' either, any of them, too mainstream.
Rod, can you advise was the car you drove in Germany plated up as 911 HUL. A contributor on the Porsche forum says the plate is only a press plate and has never been registered on a road car. Having seen Clarkson on the M40 with a 993 Turbo 911 HUL a few years back I believe he is talking ste.Well it's quite simple isn't it?

Yes the 911T I drove was plated as seen - 911 HUL, and was driven on that plate. The plate is a (the main) Porsche UK press plate and has been used on most all of the last 20 years worth of Press 911's, from what I can gather.
It just gets removed and placed on to the next new incarnation of the UK press cars as they evolve over the years and I presume the DVLA just change the plate of the old car back to it's original issued number, then they're flogged as ex press fleet (usually the best cars to get anyway, second hand).
Hope this helps!
A 'supercar' has to have the 'WOW' factor. Sadly, certainly IMO, the 997 Turbo does not.
It's not the sort of car you drop a gear to catch on a motorway to get a closer look, it's not the sort of car that has kids whipping out their camera phones at the sight of one parked up, it may be a car that I would love to own, and it may be a lot more practical than its 'competitors' but it doesnt have the WOW factor. Why? Simple. It looks too much like the rest of the range, normal people probably dont take much more of an interest in it than they do a Boxster. If it's parked up, they walk past, maybe admiring it as its quite a nice car.
Lambo Murci parked up... people stop and stare, people say 'WOW, look at that' - people mention it to their kids that they saw a Lambo today, they take pictures of them. You dont see them very often. The Porsche is far too common, its a shame. As a one off car, it may IMO have the supercar label.
Yes, its a capable car, but i dont think its a supercar.

I think the answer to this is that, it all depends on the person looking at the car...
To some people it's a supercar (I think that is proven by the amount of people saying it is on this thread alone!)
To some people it's not (again proven by the amount of people saying so)
I think it IS a supercar...
And since there's no 'official' definition of the word supercar, I don't think it matters to those who disagree!

The 911 I drove was boring! So boring in fact that I hated it! If your gonna spend the best part of £90k on a car, you want it to feel special and it just does not cut the mustard! Those who say it's consertive is a good thing, when was a supercar supposed to be consertive! The whole point of supercars, is its supposed to make you feel like a kid again! I had a stand up at MPH TOPGEAR LIVE last week at the NEC and Earls Court a few weeks before! This was a performance show aimed purly at petrol heads like our selves! Not your usual motor show! Out of over 200 cars on show, only 2 were Porschers! One 911 GT3 Cup & GT2 car was park opp our Murcielago LP640 Roadster and for the whole show, it hardly got noticed! The guy who rented it to go on his stand was very dissapointed as he was floggin insurance and hope for a better response! He said our Lambo stole the show, and I had a migrane every day through out the show, of stroppy mums demanding that I let their kid sit in the car! LOL
So it sole every kids heart! Which is the whole point of Supercars!
Porsche is not a SUPERCAR! IMO

I guess if you take it to the deepest roughest parts of London or similar and park it up, all the little kids will gather round "wikkid innit yo man cool diss car" blah blah blah. To them, it is a supercar.
To me, its not.
So it takes a rough part of london for a porsche 911 turbo to be a cool car?To me, its not.
right... that makes a lot of sense....
Also are all the people on this thread who think that it IS a supercar, all kids from a bad part of London who talk like Ali G?
No? Didn't think so....

Nice spot Mike, I'll give Harry M a ring and inform him of the mis-print in the morning
Ok - at least the CGT is a Supercar. I have never ever had it referrred to as a 'hypercar' (sounds like an Einstein word to me) and as such it only exists as a supercar. A 'supercar' is a car that no-one else gets to go in!

Hmmm surprising that - i see the Murcis all the time on the streets, and the GT3 Cup is something you don't see on the streets so would be checking that out. Sounds like the crowds were not proper petrolheads. So it sole every kids heart! Which is the whole point of Supercars!

My last comment on this thread!
A Supercar is just a notion, a passing trend....today's Supercars often end up as tomorrow's also-rans...not always, but often, for obvious reasons.
My pre-requisites for a car to be classified as such should be, in no particular order:
Exclusivity - A Supercar is only super if you feel super driving it, which won't happen if there's millions of 'em and you can just go buy one of any dealer chain.
Price - £150K upwards £90K is nowhere near enough(!) - the higher the better (10x the price of your average family hatchback +)
Speed - I'm sorry but for the 'noughties' were talking 200mph+ minimum, and mid 3's to 100 kph. We'll be talking 250mph+ soon, and high 2's, no doubt.
Crazy Materials - It must be made from the recycled scales of a Mermaid and forged by some chap with a Master's in Philosophy - 'space age materials' are so passe!
It has to be 'Edgy' OR about as subtle as a hammer, either will do- When pushing the envelope of development I expect a certain degree of 'no guts, no glory' about a car. Either you get this from it superior technology or by giving it an engine that could power The Arch. A Supercar must have a reputation for something. (early 911's had a great reputation for attempting murder you - this is GOOD!).
It must be hard to drive - Not fast on a track, but everywhere else. It has to have stupendously heavy steering (no girls allowed!) and a clutch from hell. Oh, and it must have an exhaust tone that makes animals scour in fear from a mile away!
Feel free to add to this or ignore it, it's all fun, as long as you love driving.
Happy motoring

Beg to differ my old girl gets as much if not more attention than the more modern exotica even at somewhere like le mans (IMO age makes a big difference with a porsche)I lost count of the admirers this year plenty of people were having their picture taken next to it!It's not the sort of car you drop a gear to catch on a motorway to get a closer look, it's not the sort of car that has kids whipping out their camera phones at the sight of one parked up, it may be a car that I would love to own, and it may be a lot more practical than its 'competitors' but it doesnt have the WOW factor. I do like the newest porsches but personal opinion/childhood impressions always drive my desires to the older rarer models. Also I only really like the aircooled models.
And the values hold firm even in these troubled times!
