Utter tripe.

Still waiting for any info on when a race suit has been useful on a trackday while piloting a normal, everyday road car.
If someone wants to wear one (more risk averse than you perhaps) what's the problem? Why do you care whether someone else wants to wear racewear on trackdays? It's not mandatory so everyone can make their own choice.

Useful to use like overalls if working on the car between sessions in my experience.
£20 mechanics overalls and a race suit are very different things.

My point is that no one where's a race suit in a car like a Focus for safety reasons. They where it because they think it's cool/they'r a fantasist/ both of the above.
Or they just want to. Why do you care why they wear it and what they spend their money on? It has no bearing on you. If they drive like a dick they'll do that regardless of their clothing.

The OP asked where to buy them, not whether he should be wearing them. If he wants to, good luck to him, it's his money.

Fair enough. Why wear one then? If you can't find a real situation where a race suit would help, just make one up.

(Off topic, this thread has inspired me to order this for my nephew: http://www.amazon.co.uk/RALLY-RACING-DRIVER-COSTUM... )

I have a friend who would have found wearing a nomex suit useful whilst driving his road car on the road. The 30% burns he suffered (and I do mean suffered) after an accident probably would have been reduced or even prevented completely had been dressed up like an F1 driver...
and this was a modern, volume road car?
Well, it was 7 years ago, but yep it was a new car at the time. A Focus too if I remember correctly.

It might be rare nowadays, but cars do catch fire occasionally.

Fact is, you are far more likely to require this kind of gear on the road than on a trackday.
I managed to drive all the way to the Nurburgring and back again without seeing a single accident and yet 5 cars managed to crash on the circuit itself, pretty much all of them badly enough to be written off. All of them were road cars too, not 'prototypes'.

Edited by juansolo on Thursday 6th January 17:00
How many drivers were killed or injured due to fire?
Are you suggesting that cars can't burst into flames when involved in a crash and that crashes are less likely on a track?
It is incredibly rare for a normal road car to burst into flames after an accident.
Then that is the risk you take and accept. Do not brand people dicks who place a higher value on keeping their own skin on their arse where it belongs.

Edited by juansolo on Thursday 6th January 17:39
I've not branded anyone a dick. I've said it'll mark you out as a dick. People will think you're a dick. Sorry, IO can't help what other people will think.

As I've said, I can't find anything, anywhere about anyone on a track day in a normal volume road car being involved in accident where a race suit would have helped. Neither can anyone else.

Seriously, statistically you're best wearing your race suit to bed. It'll allow you to live the racing driver dream in private and most people killed from fire do so while they sleep.
So you don't actually think it makes you look a dick then. This is just some sort of public service posting about what other people will think? Why the fk should it matter what people think, and why do you think it's your place to inform the OP of this? Don't bloody cop out now. If you think he's a dick, stand by it, defend you're opinion to the death, THIS IS PISTONHEADS, being arrogant and opinionated matters! wink

Not to mention that this thread is whiling a dull evening away nicely.

Edited by juansolo on Thursday 6th January 17:53
Not saying anyone looks like a dick. Though if I saw someone, wearing a full Stig get up jumping into a Ford Focus then I'd think they're probably a bit of a fantasist.

I'd certainly avoid them at the hotel bar as well.
On the strength of your contributions to this thread, I think he'd be quite thankful of that.

Entertain certainly. Offend no.

I don't offend easily. Being a fat bloke who occasionally chooses to wear a race suit. I certainly accept that this is a fashion mistake on my part. It's never ever going to look good. But I choose to do it because I like my flesh and should the worst happen, I'd like it to remain pale, plump and lovable rather than crusty, red and sore. No one in my position would chose to wear clothing like this for any other reason than for it's fire retardancy. However you seem to think I do it because it makes me 'look good' in some way... That annoys me and I'm bored at the moment so easily engaged in pointless banter.

So you'd wear all that in a hatchback like a Focus. Fair enough

I wouldn't drive a Focus, but that's another thread entirely. I certainly wouldn't have a problem with anyone in any car choosing to wear a race suit.

The OP asked for recommended suppliers of race suits. Some kind souls supplied the requested information pages back in between the arguing.

The two camps that are chatting are either of the opinion that it's pointless and makes you look a dick or what you look like is irrelevant if that's what you want to do. Strayed pretty much from topic instantly.

It has potential to go on for some time. Welcome!

Maybe I should set up a website and charge? This could be my ticket out of IT!
