Been lurking on Piston Heads for a while now but this weeks SOTW has made me join as back in 95 I had exactly the same car. Same colour scheme the lot.

Can honestly say it was the best motor I have ever owned. 6 Months old when I bought it. Swapped it for my 911 as at the time I had a small family and needed the space.

A limo that could play sports car when needed. On a particularly fine trip back from the Monaco GP across the Alps power sliding the rear end out of the hair pins was just heaven. A friend in a F355 on the same trip commented that as fast as he went "Every time I looked in my rear view mirror all I could see was you with a great big grin in that bloody great arm chair of yours".

It did like a drink but in those days it wasn't a case of fuel consumption but that it needed a bigger fuel tank.

Absolute top car

Great shed. Motive guts of an Aston DB7 and four doors. I'd love one if I had the space.

An X300 would be a great project on wheeler Dealers cool I've had my 3.2 for 3 years and the only major problem was a fault with the airflow meter - a pattern one cost less than £130smile
There are plenty of S/H parts on £ bay, running an older XJ6 can be done on a budget cloud9

You'll love it

I remember when I sold mine many years ago now, my 9 year old daughter at the time cried and said "How could you possibly sell the Jag Daddy. I loved that car"

That's ma girl

As others have said - if it was going to pass an MOT the owner would have stuck one one and doubled the price. It's going to be going to the scrapyard in 2 months, the current owner is just trying to get an extra £700 for it as a result of some mug listening to people like you with their long shot 'I bought a £700 V12 XJS and it cost me peanuts' bullst.
Can you point me towards one of these 300 quid MOT failure XJRs that you're basing your reasoning on? Shoddy ones with no test seem to go for about 700 on eBay. That suggests to me that this one is considerably less of a gamble than you think.

I've just bought one of these today, its the later V8 model (1998) in black with cream leather. Has had the nikasil, tensioners, water pump and thermostat sorted which are common problems. It's got 97k and 'some' history. Think it needs ball joints and drop links on the front but that shouldnt be too expensive. Hopefully it wont need much else in the next few months as thats all I plan to keep it for, always been one of those 'I must own one of those at one point' cars.

Will post more details and pics over the next week or so.

I did that with an XJS, 3 years later I still had it, when if finally got too rusty to keep I sold it and replaced it with a V8 XJR...be careful in the wet, that the TC light keeps flashing at you is not a fault. Do not see what will happen if you turn the traction control off. It will go badly. ;-)

Wasn't the DB7 a 3.2? Also the underneath is actually more advanced then the DB7, which was similar to the XJS. The X300 is much more like an XK8.

Absolutely not. My entire motoring career has been barges in the sub £5k camp (including an XJ40, for what it's worth), but you've got to be realistic about these things. This is £1000 worth of scrap or parts, nothing else.

Fair play on the SIII, I've always fancied one.

Except that in 300's defence he's talking about an experience he actually had, whereas you are making assumptions...

...for me the gamble is all part of the appeal. Yes, it probably will need a fair bit of work to get it MOT'd, but it might not. And that's what makes it so tempting (for me at least)
Yeah and I once drove 1,200 miles around Morocco in a Fiesta with no detectable oil on the dipstick. I realise I 'got away with it' and it's not something I'd go suggesting to other people based on the fact that it worked out for me....same deal with buying a £700 V12. 300bhp got lucky, nothing else.

You're going to have to help me out here. I can't find a single XJR on ebay up for less than a grand. What I can find are examples with some MOT and service history up for £3.5k+. I'm not saying there are £300 ones without any MOT, I'm saying that's what the current owner will get when he weighs it in when it fails it's MOT.

Great SOTW

I had a 3.2 XJ then a gorgeous XJS V12, a truly awesome car and I have been looking at getting an XJR for months, I have looked on Pistonheads everyday and would love to get the XJR-100, but never seem to find a good one frown
