Sigh, I remembered why I don't bother coming on here that often anymore.
Yes, it’s getting that way.DonkeyApple said:
It's an interesting idea that the existence of a third lane is the thing that triggers the tools and confuses the thick. Maybe when there's only two lanes it harder for them to claim ownership or they're more fearful of confrontation? With a middle lane they know they can cause trouble for everyone else but as their victims can all ultimately get past its always going to be low to no confrontation.
Statistics suggest that PH is riddled with the people who deliver sit in the middle lane in the U.K. and then have perfect lane discipline when they go abroad. Why do they keep so quiet on PH if they have a reason for doing what they do if it isn't out of inner anger and self contempt?

So many cars sit in lane 2 at 35 or even less with an empty lane one.
I undertook one tool yesterday as I didn't want to slow from 40 and he was doing 30 in lane 2.
Got a beep for my troubles and got to see him angrily shouting and waving his arms in my rearview.
Slow idiot joins an almost empty motorway approx 400m ahead of me, maybe 40mph
Van in lane one doing 50ish with 350m to the idiot decides not to brake, nor check his mirrors and just pulls in front of me in lane 2 at 77
So two idiots who can't drive - on a clear motorway have forced me to brake hard in the outside lane
It's simple enough, if what you are doing makes someone else have to take avoiding action - YOU AREN'T DOING IT RIGHT
I saw it all happening and assumed the van driver would either lift off or wait for me to overtake before changing lane

It's this sort of pathetic small-mindedness that's prolific on our roads now and makes a stress free fun drive almost impossible. Sadly you see the same behaviour from middle aged men mainly in supermarkets. Very poor manners, dogmatic approach to queuing, strict observance of till belt divider etiquette expected or scowls will ensue etc etcSo many cars sit in lane 2 at 35 or even less with an empty lane one.

So you saw a risk developing and failed to adjust your driving plan to incorporate it and mitigate its impact if it occurred? Van in lane one doing 50ish with 350m to the idiot decides not to brake, nor check his mirrors and just pulls in front of me in lane 2 at 77

Vision Zero, or Zero Vision.
Always looks like a very simplistic view on road safety. Why not limit all new vehicles to 20mph with a zorb for every pedestrian.
Add auto braking so iZombies can walk or zorb into the road without concern. While you're at it, ban alcohol and smart phones, loud music, cars older than 6 months and limit licenses to over 30yo and less than 60.
Of course most of that is made up, but it's soon going to take double the time it used to take for any journey we did in the 90's.
The worst thing is people are actually believing the message.

I felt comfortable at 40-50mph, no more. That’s the speed I drove at.
(Normally on familiar well lit roads I stick to the limit + 10%)
The locals clearly were happy bombing around at 60mph, and their progress was probably being impeded by me.
(Oh, and I passed the aftermath of an accident, car totalled, someone being loaded into an ambulance, hard to say if it was a local or a tourist.)
Should I hand my licence in?
Going to depend on whether you were holding others up or not. If the road is empty feel free to drive at 5mph or hoon it into a deer on a blind corner but if there are fellow road users being impeded then you just help them pass. It's not the speed but the etiquette that matters.
As for whether to hand the license in, absolutely. No self respecting person goes to a Cornish rental off season. It's still hypermiling in the Cotswolds until late May!!!

No safe passing points for quite a while (Cornish lanes) so the options were me driving faster than I wanted to (being unfamiliar with the roads) or the locals driving slower than they normally do.
