You could go on and on really. Basically it makes no sense to spend £65k on a diesel, let alone one that looks like that. You can get a lot of a 2 car combo for that money! £25k max on a decent new-ish diesel and then at the very least £40k on whatever toy you want... it's just insane what you could get.
Yes, this is an expensive diesel - it doesn’t take Einstein to work that out. It’s a new car, and should only be compared to other new cars in its class. Yes, a 320d is cheaper what so what, a 3 seater sofa from DFS is also cheaper but this is as much relevance to a potential buyer of an M550d
It will be cheaper, faster and better than Panamera Diesel, which is the 2nd best selling Porsche in the UK and it costs about £70k
And you can buy any amount of Merc and Audi Diesels for that sort of money
So its stupidly expensive yes, but you only directly compare it to its equivalents which it’s on par with
I posted this extract from the Autocar M5 vs D5 article on the "tell me I'm wrong" M5 thread.

When the trade off is 18mpg versus 39mpg if our test averages are anything to go by... how much more performance do you really need? Especially when the D5 feels more than fast enough in isolation or, indeed, compared with most other cars that have four seats and a decent boot.
And that's before we come back to the M5's ride comfort issues, or its shorter 236 mile-shorter touring range, its less special feeling interior, its oddly unresolved steering and, most glaring of all in this instance its price. Add this lot up, stack them in a pile and there's only one logical conclusion to draw I'm afraid - that the D5 wins, and wins easily. The head rules the heart in this case and, in the process a little piece of your heart gets broken

Is the dash a digital one which reflects that the car has a limiter or is this car (first ever?) fitted with a speedo which actually states the top speed of the car and not 30-40mph over it?
if the latter, does that mean bmw aren't doing what audi and mercedes are doing, and giving you an option to remove the limiter? Or would you just get a different speedo if you did that? Also, got to say, I really can see the advantage over an M5. More relaxing, more time between stops, who cares about the performance differential if it's only exploitable on track? For the track, I'd have a caterham. That way, I'd have two fun cars, the cheaper of which is probably more fun than an overpowered supersaloon, and the both you know the engine noise is BLOODY REAL
20mpg is terrible ...
I did a track day at Brands the other day and got 36mpg and also wheel spin at over 70mph. I think I had more fun on that one day than any BMW driver will ever have in this car.
Chris Goodwin in latest Autocar was right on his letter to Porsche, and Dan is right in his M5 posts on here.
It has gone too far.
EVEN EVO THINKS THE NEW 911 HAS LOST THE PLOT.

You think 20.1mpg cruising at 155mph is terrible?I did a track day at Brands the other day and got 36mpg and also wheel spin at over 70mph. I think I had more fun on that one day than any BMW driver will ever have in this car.

yes I do,
If you want to be bored to death just going along a motorway then at least save your pennies for doing something more exciting with it afterwards.
Problem is it can't do anything more exciting afterwards
It's far too good, been developed by people with calculators getting the ninth degree.
Blimey, you could get 2 Toyota GT86 for this, one for B roads and one for track, and fit a supercharger to the latter!

You're not a businessman that sometimes needs to make up some time?
What on Britain's crowded motorways? I travel on them every day of the week. Can't say I have ever been barged past by one at 155. If I was I am sure the Alpina that does 176mph with the 535D engine would be even better. This just shows the complete insanity of the whole thing. They give it 3 turbo's and then cap the top speed to 155. So it is all just down to numbers.
Like I said, good in the golf club bar for talking points.
