They look fab in the flesh IMO, though (very) big.

I still find the thought of a diesel Porsche depressing.
If cash cows such as the Panamera (and Cayenne) diesel allow Porsche to build stuff like the GT3 then so be it.

There is obviously a market for stuff like this.

Unfortunately true though. Maybe if they had the cash to build that Lagonda 4x4 ...

Haha Chris, love it how you reply to the questions in these threads. Entering the bear pit. What other motoring journo does that?

And it's attitudes like yours that will seal the fate of makers such as Aston.

Diversify the customer base, find a suitable partner, or die. It seems you prefer the latter, rather than have the brands you love chase " unreasonable success", whatever that means ....

I have no issue with it being a diesel.

By the way, just for the internet bullies out there, I like the 917, 959, 968 CS, 928 and Carrera GT.

But, seriously, do you think the Panamera's good looking too Stuart?
I don't think it is pretty. At all. It pales into insignificance compared to how ugly I think the new Vanquish is though.

The Panamera is an excellent car. Excellent.

None of which by the way matters one jot. You've accused CH of "insidiously undermining the British car industry" and "taking a pop at the hand that feeds" because there are aspects of the XF meriting criticism.

That's quite the most laughably jingoistic piece of nonsense I think I've ever read on here, and it isn't the first time you've spouted such rubbish. You're a troll, and I have no time for trolls.

You do realise that Aston is doomed ultimately, if they don't widen their range and do what Porsche have done?

Aston is the only remaining premium sporting car manufacturer that is trying to exist on selling 2 seaters and 2+2's.

Ferrari have Maserati as a sister co ( shortly to launch an SUV).

Jaguar have Land Rover.

The rest are VAG.

They're doomed I tell yee, doomed. Aston will probably be owned by TATA inside 5 years.

Looking at what TATA have achieved with an apparent very light touch on Jaguar-Land Rover, adding Aston to that stable would seem to be not a bad possibility for TATA or Aston Martin. This is from an Aston fan and someone who actually owns a British sportscar albeit a much cheaper one wink

The thing about Porsche, they have no problem sticking two fingers up to convention and public expectations, and instead just do what they need to do. And I like that attitude. Their cars are rarely pretty, but by god they're good. Substance over style every time.

And hats off to Mr H. for joining in with the debate clap

We're at a point in time when 'performance' is becoming slightly academic.

-If one vehicle isn't 'the fastest' as measured by a particular yardstick, doesn't make it slow or lacking in 'performance'.

Remember too that the person holding the steering wheel is also an important part of the package.

It's a diesel arms race. In day-to-day driving, would it make much of a difference beyond the figures in the brochure?

Would 20% more power make a difference day to day?

I'd say so yes. And even if it wouldn't make a difference day to day, if say it would on a regular basis.

So the problem with the Jag was an iPhone which had nothing to do with Jaguar? Strange complaint. Maybe it will turn out there is a problem with Nike shoes which ruin the way the Porsche feels.

I am sure the Panamera is a very accomplished car and a great tourer, but the compromised looks would mean it very unlikely to be on my wish list at any time.

Good to know a petrolhead can get on with a diesel I guess, but would it be as satisfying if it was the only car you had? Chris is lucky enough to have a 599 and access to all sorts of other cars for the type of blast that only a petrol is likely to give. For many people it would be the only car they would drive a lot of the time - how would it be then? Genuinely interested to know the answer to that, and it is something which I often think when magazines discuss long term test cars (not that long term means long term in relation to many owners).
Probably best to read all the reports on the Jag before getting too pithy. There were many less than resolved aspects of the Jag - all of which were listed.

Don't know my exact annual mileage, but it's in the 60-80k area, so I'll spend enough time in it.

If it was my only car, I'd be over the moon right now.
Fair enough about the other points for the Jag (I've revisited your earlier posts) but I stand by my comment that it is wrong to criticise the car for the Apple product not working in it.

You haven't quite answered my other point, would you at some point during the 60k plus miles in a diesel not wish you had the ability for a high revs blat in a way only a petrol engine can? As in if you didn't have access to another car at all. I know I missed it when I had a diesel for a couple of years doing 30k plus miles.

The man has an iphone. He says it works in the Porsche but not in the Jag. Seems a fair enough point to make. Lots of people have iphones (I don't), they might find CH's experience useful.

Would the criticism be fair if (as it seems) Jag say the car should integrate with said iphone but can't make it do so?

There is just much wrong about this thread: '...would've been interesting' - NO IT WOULDN'T!

'The Diesel nails the Hybrid' - DOES ANYONE REALLY CARE??!! APART FROM TOPPSTUFF, REALLY??

This is one of the most hideous monstrosities ever to be created - no question!
